Hackaday Lazy Afternoons

Lazy Afternoons

ok this is totally unofficial and spur of the moment, but let me explain this tomfoolery.

since i started writing for hackaday and jason has become a father full time (congratulations so much by the way), it’s been a very interesting transition for me and i’m loving all you readers more and more. the tips and comments (good or bad) i truely appreciate and it shows that whether you love or hate the hack of the day, you’re here for good fun hacks.

so…we’re going to try this whole “lazy afternoons” thing. basically, you send in your hack, and during the afternoon, i check my gmail, see what’s up, find an interesting and (here’s the important part) easy to make hack, and post your hack up here for all hackaday readers to try out for themselves. not everyone can afford $600 for an android head, let alone know how to solder even sometimes. that’s ok. the important part is that you’re interested. so i present to you:

the world’s simplest FM radio jammer sent in by [megabite1]
FM Radio Jammer
we’ve all been there before. maybe we’ve even been guilty of it, but there will always be that person with the radio blasting unwanted music at a time that is not convienient for us. don’t get me wrong here, i don’t mind the occasional Run DMC “hard times” at 2am, but sometimes I need that sleep. so with a 100mhz crystal oscillator and a piece of wire acting as an antenna stuck in it, you can properly jam all 100mhz FM stations and apparently possibly the whole FM band. he says these are a bit hard to find, but dig around or try a place like mouser for one. either way, it’s good for some temporary relief when you need peace and quiet.

so until next time hackers, enjoy your lazy afternoon and keep sending in hacks. we love ’em. no worries, hackaday links will return soon.

  1. I purchased 695-CSX750FJC100M, a 100.0000MHz oscillator from Mouser. I also got the two AAA plastic battery holder and soldered it up to pads #2 and #3. I can blank out 98-102 just by touching the other two pads. But nothing as far as the whole band.

I am beginning to wonder if Afroman really got this to work.

  2. ok got the one from jamco does not do anything when hooked to power looking at the chip with the writing facing me I hooked it up like the pic and with the radio on the same table does not blank out anything am I hooking it up wrong ?? please let me know thanks .

  3. Does anyone here know where i can get a 100Mhz crystal oscillator lying around the house. . .or like what can i find it in. . .

    and in reply to greenflame.

Can you make a picture of this thing, i dont understand what u mean, im only 13 and im really board. . .

  5. i think you can get them out of phones (cells and cordless), microwaves, and maybe radios (im not sure about the radios)

i like this hack, i will try it as soon as i can cut my old cell phones up :)

  6. Folks, the ideas mentioned in the user comments here are quite a bit better than the original design here. But you’re going to have to do a little bit of research yourself. Look up a datasheet on the 555 timer chip. Figure out what you need to get it to a 100mhz pulse. Then build it. This way you have the advantage of using a potentiometer and adjusting the output pulse.

Consider finding the method to do this to be a hack of your own.

  7. i just wanted to say that i got 5 free 100mhz oscillating crystals free from fox electronics. I hooked up everything as shown on the afro site, and nothing except a little distortion on 100mhz…..so dont waste you time with his design. Windwaker what ic would you use, and do you have a schematic/plans???

  8. I have been reading on fm jammers just to get a peak at what “The incognious peoples of the world have against, poor old me.”

I was wondering if there are any easy schematic plans on how to build an FM radio jammer, something that can reach 88.0-108.0 MHz’s, or higher would be helpfull.

  10. Since I haven’t picked up a JTOS-150 Oscillator yet (75-150mhz) I pulled a little 49mhz chip from a radio control car’s remote and was wondering, how do i wire the antennae to it?

  11. Im inerested in finding out how to build a AM frequencie jammer. Its for a senior prank at school, and it would be helpful not to be seen by security. I heard that tv is transmitted in AM waves, so in theory, a AM jammer would render a cctv camera innefective. Right? reply to tommygunn9820@yahoo.com
