hackaday monday sipping

monday sipping

well good morning hackaday readers. it’s monday. we’re all back at the office/classroom/jailcell so we know you are dying to get a few good tidbits of information in before you start having to work.

got a cat? maybe, maybe not. either way, this guy has a facial recognition door for his cat. insane eh? very cool though. maybe he should use it for humans.

Also, in other tech and hackery news, there’s still some major concerns over google’s way of storing your information and preferences. I can see a cause for concern but whatever, get over it. Not only that, but it’s true that last week South Korean hackers 0wn3d microsoft’s msn site and planted a password stealer. Very nice work.

Also, a new internet possible? I scoff at the idea, but embrace it at the same time. This time, it’s based on RFID tags.

Slashdot also had a cute little link to howto build your own linux distro. hackaday linux? vince linux? sendustodefconthisyear linux? hmmm, maybe. depends how big of a fan of work you are.

This is really cool in ways. A Judge threw out a dude’s DUI charge because he could not provide the man with information on how the breathalyzer works. The company wasn’t too big on giving their information to the state. A new legal defense? maybe. I think we need more open-source things from everything to code to information. Demand it to be public!

And one guy is selling every issue of WIRED on eBay. Does anyone care? Mmmm.

Also, a monday morning wouldn’t be complete without fun tidbits right? So here’s a picture for you to gander at: Pete Cabrinha riding a 70ft wave. The largest ever. Jesus God I’d be scared.

And may I reccoment a good site to visit? PWOT is packed with humor to the first degree. Tons of content and the forum is nice. I highly reccomend it during work or free time.

Now go brush up on Aristotle and enjoy your monday. Hopefully by now it’s a bit better. fool.

  1. … ok this is like /. but with a black background.

I don’t know about everyone else’s RSS feed but on my toolbar I have MirrorDot first then hackaday.

I do appreciate the Monday Sips, but currently it just seems you could import an iframe tag and point it to /.

Let’s keep up the hacking and stop the slacking ;)

  2. more hacks man!
i’ll be dailing in later today or early in the morning with some fresh hacks of something or another from FL.
    keep on the lookout.

  3. I realized I had know life just now when I found myself pondering what Squirrel (the cat) was doing outside this afternoon between 12:50 and 1:20PM.

  4. #8 – The idea would be to stop posting /. links. That would make it better via the “hint” mechanism. If they want to post /. links that is all fine and dandy, they could even have a new intermittent theme called “Slash-a-Days” where they post their favorite /. links just in case we missed them for on reason or another. That would make it better. But the iframe idea was a good one that way we can echo 23 and see what’s up LIVE as we are reading hack-a-day. That would make it better. :)

  5. I think that re-posting slashdot links is a huge waste of time and effort. If it’s going to be done, i think it would suffice to have a small link box off to the side of the page with ‘up to the minute’ style linkage.

  6. ok ok, so we like slashdot aaaand we like our hackaday, separately. No big deal tho- I think its funny when they show up on both. Separately, the Aristotle thing made me think- anyone remember seeing the thing on /. about the particle accelerator being used to recover previously unread aristotle works? I’d love to see a follow up on that because I think that qualifies as a GIGANTIC hack, which would be using one of our most amazing machines as humans for a previously unthought of use.

  7. Um, I don’t even hit /. because, well, I have a life. Ha.

But seriously, I don’t hit /. but I come here because of the hacks. Don’t know why the two can’t mix now and again just so long as it’s not a habit. I mean, this site is called hackaday for a reason, I’m guessing.

Now, I’m still wondering. What is the surprise?

  8. duh, you make your own mug. This _is_ hackaday. Now start with that ‘World’s greatest grandpa’ mug, paint it black, and add your own jolly roger!

  9. I like #16s idea, we need a forum or something, so we can leave suggestions, build somewhat of a ‘community’, sharing ideas and hacks. Plus it’s pretty hard to troll on a comments page.
