Take care! Hackaday is getting very busy!

UPDATE: Get your meeting information in to me!!! Tonight preferably. I’m sitting here setting up the meeting list and what not. Please include the following info and dont use the comments for posting info, send it to me and a post will be made about it!

  1. now, i honestly think you should reconsider the whole “every thursday/friday” bit. we used to do that, and it gets old quick. you lose things to talk about. and i don’t want hack-a-day getting old. i love this.

so i would suggest changing it to the first thursday of the month, or every other thursday at least. that way there are more things for people to talk about. and people won’t get fed up with spending that much money on gas every week.

i represent the computer consultants of susquehanna university, and a number of us want to come to your meetings, but we won’t be able to make every one (as I am sure is the case with many people). if you held them at the start of the month we would be much more willing to shell out the cash for the three hour drive. and all those people who would skip out random ones would actually be there. all in all i think you would get a better turn-out that way.

please don’t just breeze over this comment, it think you should think about it dude.

  2. ladies and gentlemen,i call bullshit. i strongly suspect that there is no camcorder hack ready as of yet,and that a certain website operator is in for one hell of severe shitstorm.

  3. wtf?

this post is -not- about the damn cvs camcorder. no one cares that you are looking foreward to it. this is the same off-topic b.s. and “me too!!!11!one” garbage that bogs down plenty of other sites. Don’t post gripes. Don’t post garbage. Don’t post just to see your name on “t3h 1n73rn3t.” Stay on topic.

P.S. Yes, I am aware of the irony of posting an off-topic rant against off-topic posts.

  4. billytheimpaler: i’ll post whatever i like, thank you very much. and i’d like to respond to that other comment you made, but apparently you had a stroke while typing it,because it came out all letters and numbers jumbled together. try again when the medication kicks in,ok?

    what a loser.

  5. yay! you can use the internet! I bet your mommy is so proud jamima69. Come on, 69? That is soo middle school.

Anyways, I concur on the once a month meeting. Seems to be a better idea.

  6. You guys dont get it. The camcorder hack is done but software is in the way. No one out there has the protocol for the USB connection yet and then on top of that, device drivers must be built. It’s a ton of work and is not easy by any means. If it was, it would have been out a week after released. Good things take time, and we’ve got over 5 people working on it. You’ll get it. No worries.

And jamima69, if that’s a threat, consider yourself banned. You’ve been warned. We like comments whether positive or negative. Not threats.

  7. Thanks for the update Vince. I think that’s exactly what the folks here needed. We just wanted some sort of “sign” that the cvs camcorder hack is not being dropped.

But back on topic, I’d be interested in checking out a meeting in Tampa, but haven’t seen anyone mention anything close to this area in Florida.

  8. you guys have to just have a meeting set in stone. even if its only between 2 people. if it’s set in stone and we post it on the site, people will see it, and therefore can come. just e-mail me all your meeting info. just make the meeting yourself.

  9. um, cough:

    POST 25

  10. yup, a seattle meet would be very nice. i would volunteer to host it, except that i really am a complete noob to the whole thing, so it would be like the blind leading the blind. so, how about a seattle hackaday meeting? i know we have some people up here who would be interested.

  11. CVS Camcorder hacking is in progress, to follow just read these sites/bboards:

    http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=cameras&Post=49

    and

    http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/

note that there is no “download your videos from it for free” hack yet, and i severely doubt there will be one available for the next few months. (The usb wiring diagram was quick because the still-cameras used a similar system .)
It took -months- (if not a full year!) to hack the still cams in order to enable picture-downloading. While I wasnt involved I did watch the progress and noted that it is was a very non-trivial hack, requiring ‘blue-wire’ flash dumping, full flash disassembly, etc. etc.
To think that Dakota would make it easier/trivial to hack the camcorder is foolish, particularly since the market is even slimmer.

  12. Undeserving lamers begging for a fix for the cvs cam….quit flooding comments with your garbage. if it’s so important that your cam gets hacked, DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!!! those of us actually working very hard to get this thing going have lives outside of making freeloading lamers happy. Nuff said. Dammit

  13. I started an ***un***-official hackaday irc chat:

    #hackaday on the efnet network.

Please join us, together we could have a pretty cool channel, full of hack talk, smart people, newbies and of course, people to make fun of.

Note: This channel will not be affiliated with the site, and the posters probably will not be there, its just a cool way to get our type of people together to learn from eachother, hang out, and tell stupid jokes and trade nerdy links.

  14. just for kicks, anyone interested in having a meetup in tallinn? it just seemed to be the right place to ask it here. would be fun to see, how many true fans are residing here.

  15. working on the otu digital camera took a lot more than just figuring out the usb pinouts on the circut board
it took finding products with similar chipsets
    finding drivers and modifying them
also it took removing the flash memory from the circut board just to get a peek into the firmware and unlock it
claming a 90%hack when all you have is a
three finger salute and no usb protocall
is jumping the gun a bit
when you are able to download the firmware
and start analyzing it with a dissambler
    you might have a 50%hack
unlocking and downloading the video in whatever format it may be in and reseting the camera
    might be a 70% hack
we are at the stage with the still camera
of downloading decoding resetting the picture counter changing the amount of pictures taken
    permenatly unlocking the camera
and still working on several other hacks
like live preview, sd card mods, flash control mods. infered mods black/white mods (for higher resloution) and still dont think that we are at the 90% mark we still are trying to decode the firmware with instruction sets we are about 30%
    into it

  17. the still camera hack is an absolutely GREAT hack. its great that they are still working on it. sure videos are nice, but you cant easily stick some cd/dvd’s in a photo album can you?

  18. considering what has yet to be done with the cvs cam, instead of letting the big release get pushed back, why not publish what *has* been done? letting people know how the hardware is setup, maybe provide some sample i/o from the usb connection, etc., could help to get people on board and helping out with the project as it progresses.

rather than just letting everyone whine about when it will be finished.

  19. Check out the two sites mentioned by ladyada up in #37 for progress and details of the project so far. Basically, Vince’s summary is where the project is at though. You can get it connected via usb, but there is no way to get data off the device yet. No one has even been able to get any sort of video/audio outs going either. Last I read, people were starting to look into tapping into the video signal going to the LCD.

  20. The reason everyone is asking about the CVS hack over and over is because last week, it was posted on hackaday that the CVS camera how-to would be posted here tuesday… If that statement had never been made, then people wouldn’t be asking…

  21. If some of you are so concerned over getting a camera you can download video from for less than $20, then just buy one of the nifty little bastards from Overstock. Honestly.

    No one likes a whiner.
