How-To: Automatically Download And Convert TV For Your IPod

itunes
The good folks at Videora have recently released the Videora iPod Converter. Using this tool you can make almost any video iPod ready. They have a handy how-to for ripping and transcoding your own DVDs. Our goal is to automatically download TV using Bittorrent and convert it to an iPod friendly format saving ourselves $2.

First thing you’ll need is a functional BroadCatching system using Azureus. Follow our BroadCatching How-To to set one up. The BroadCatching system will automatically download the TV programs you set.

There are two important things you need to configure in Azureus. Goto “Tools -> Options“. Check the box next to “Save to default data directory“. Choose a directory where you want the files to be kept while they are being downloaded. Check the box next to “Move completed files“. Choose a directory where you would like your TV shows to be placed after they have been downloaded. Click “Save“. Configuration of Azureus is complete.

Azureus config

To automatically convert the videos you will need to install both Videora and the Videora iPod Converter. We won’t be using Videora, but it needs to be installed for the xCasting option to turn on.

After you get the Videora iPod Converter installed there are only a few more things to set before you’re ready to go. Click on “Setup“. Choose a directory where you would like the iPod ready files to be placed. UPDATE: The H.264 profiles do not work with the iPod. Choose either SP or MPEG4.

Videora config

For xCasting you need to select where you installed Videora before you can configure it. Check the box for “Automatic Queuing” and choose the directory where your completed downloads are stored. Pick a time interval to check the directory. Click “Save“.

xCasting config

Now whenever a new file appears in your “completed” directory Videora will automatically add it to its conversion queue. Once the files have been successfully converted they will be placed in your other folder, ready to be transferred to your iPod. The converter can automatically copy the files to your device, but we were unable to test this feature since Apple is still telling us they’re “Processing Order”. Good Luck!

First of all, when using videora iPod converter i put the setting as MPEG-4/320×240/768kbps Stereo/128kbps.
I could only convert avi files because all the mpeg files i have are muxed. Does anyone have a demux program for windows???
Also when i do convert the avi it can only do the full movies, many small avi files dont work. Why is that???
Another thing is that when i do successfully convert an avi file and do get it on my ipod the first half of the movie is good, the audio and video in sync. But the other half is way outta sync. Anyone have that problem too and a possible solution???

Back to your question about itunes, yes you need to use itunes. Make sure u have the latest version because that has the video option. i dont no what version that is. Just dl it from apple. And to get it in itunes, first it need to be converted (the format i showed you MPEG-4/320×240/768kbps Stereo/128kbps which worked for me). Make sure the video you download is a avi file over 250 mbs. Like i said the smaller avi just wouldnt work for me. Anyway once you do have the converted file then just go to itunes and click ” file/add file to library ” and then it should be in your library at the bottom and in the movie section of itunes. Just connect your ipod and there you go. Post any problems and/or comments back. I NEED A DEMUXING PROGRAM FOR WINDOWS.

  6. Pretty cool, but I’d really like to do just the opposite: Download videos from iTunes and convert them so something I can watch on my PSP or burn to a DVD.

IS THIS POSSIBLE PLEASE HELP ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  7. For those of you looking for Mac ipod video utilities, forget about Quicktime Pro. Just go to versiontracker.com and search for “ipod video”. There are more than 10 shareware/freeware utilities available and a few commercial ones.

  8. To get your audio and video to sync, try adding “-async 1” (w/o quotes) to the extra ffmpeg flags. (I tried this alone but it didn’t work) Then set the fps to 29.97. I didn’t remove the async flag to check if it works by changing the fps alone though, maybe someone can try and tell me.

Well, I was having audio sync problems like everyone’s mentioning and I changed the fps to 29.97 like you suggested and that did the trick WITHOUT using the async flag, so that answers that question. Thanks for the heads up on the fps.

  10. This is in reference to post 66 by eeker after u change that fps which setting did u use so that evreything synched properly cuz right now i use mpeg4/320×240/1500kbps etc. and i didnt no if there was a better setting?

  11. I just download a program called river past video cleaner, and I use it to convert my MPEG-1(muxed) files to MPEG-4 so I can load them on my IPOD. but then I had to DL quicktime pro to change the MPEG-4 files to IPOD (.m4v) but IPOD said you can play MPEG-4 files on the ipod. why cant you? is quicktime ripping us off? the quicktime pro software wont even convert MPEG-1 (muxed) to MPEG-4 properly. the sound doesnt work.

  12. i downloaded music videos from morpheous and when i tried downloading it to my ipod via imtoo video converter, the musicvideos went int the movie section and not in the music videosection. please help me

  13. When looking at the file in iTunes go to Info and select tje option tab, in that screen there should be a click down box called Video kind, select Music Videos and that should do it.

  17. If you don’t want to get into the local side of conversion, there is a great tool at http://www.video4ipod.org. It is still running in Beta, which does the conversion great, but doesn’t have it in the prettiest format. Most videos that I uploaded were returned to me within ten minutes at perfect .m4v format. Good luck.
