using debian on a powerbook g3 233mhz (lombard), a kensington auto/ac/air adapter and crystalfontz lcd screen with usb->serial adapter you can a pretty slick (and inexpensive) in car mp3 play for your car. add a wifi card and manage all the music when you pull in to the driveway.

there is a reg. key you can edit to enable bluetooth headsets on ipaq.

and also there is a key in softwaremediaplayer that has somthing in the lines of play unsupported=0 (off) enabeling it must do something but i dont know what,but i supose U people could figure it out.

so if you have a bluetooth headset for your phone and have a bluetooth ipaq, there’s a good chance you can use your headset to listen to audio through the headset.

there’s a pretty slick device called the “thanko usb pc lock” that will unlock and lock your pc based on how close your are to it (physically).

the only downside is the software that comes with seems a bit wonky, but–bryan batchelder rolled up a better version which to address all the complaints we had, the future features look pretty sweet too.

hey, the treo might be the next ipod for hacks if this keeps up, then people can complain about all the treo hacks.

apple cripples recording on an ipod so belkin and griffin then have to sell us add-on devices for over $50 that can only record at 8khz, which is all pretty shitty. apparently (the rumor is) apple does this so people don’t use their ipods to record stuff they think we shouldn’t, like concerts, whatever.

but don’t worry, there’s a way around it and you can record at high quality, all for free.

1. Install Podzilla on your iPod (not all models are supported).
2. Boot in to Linux on your iPod.
3. Go to Extras > Recordings, choose 8,32,44.1,88.2 or 96kHz the higher, the better quality.
4. Record via Line In a microphone or even use your headphones.
5. Boot back in to the normal iPod OS plug in to the doc, grab your files from the iPod in the “Recordings” folder.

i suspect the next version of the ipod won’t allow booting in to linux and/or this type of recording. enjoy it while you can.

with all the podcasting people out there apple should consider not crippling our ipods so we can all use ipods to record, apple could do this now with a simple software update… or i guess i can keep booting in to linux and never update this ipod or just buy a cheap recorder, bah.

jeez, a ton of people must have received ipods over the last month, everyone keeps sending in ipod hacks. here’s one that /. covered earlier, putting linux on your ipod. i had played with this before, but this version is pretty solid, new games, sound, recording, image viewing (see picture above) on 3g ipods, and you can dual boot. it’s kinda cool to dual boot and geek out with some penguin flavored ipod, i suspect all the features not in our ipods now might eventually show up on custom builds like this later.

i’ve posted up the how-to i cooked up on changing the graphics in our ipod hacks sections, but now with the latest version of ipodwizard you can also change all the text (also called strings). for example, in the picture above the legal section was changed. click the read link to see a good step-by-step on this.

since a ton of you have likely received or bought an ipod for the holidays–don’t forget, when you buy music from itunes, it’s sometimes a dead end and you music is trapped. i have a lot of non-ipod music players and computers i can’t “authorize” to play my purchased music on, so jhymn solves a lot of those issues and it still keeps your info inside the song(s).

in berlin there are rental bikes that you can a bit of money for, get a code and use the bike to go about your way. of course, something like this is an interesting challenge for people who like to figure stuff out. the hack a bike project replaced the software on the locks allowing a backdoor code so anyone, who knows the code can get some free bike action.

..make a dish into a highly directional antenna for the very popular IEEE 802.11 wireless networking. The resulting antenna has about 22 db of gain, and is fed with 50 ohm coaxial cable. Usually LMR400 or 9913 low loss cable is used if the source is more than a few feet from the antenna. The range using two of these antennas with a line of sight path is around 10 miles at full bandwidth.

it’s nintendo ds week here folks, well, not really, i’m just trying to get a few nintendo posts up as things “start” to develop. over on the gbadev forum, it looks like someone dumped the rom of metroid prime, at least the start of it. why is this good? one, figuring this out will get us all started on developing games, content, applications and more. and two, i know i’d like back up my roms the ds cartridges are tiny and bound to get lost, ideally i’d like to store them all on one big ole’ monster card.

sure, you can go out and get a media center pc already configured and good to go–but what’s the fun in that? also, there’s a ton of other components, cases and set ups you might want to cook up, so here’s an excellent guide on making your own media center pc.
