<p>Here&#8217;s an Android headphone add-on so clean that most people won&#8217;t know you built it yourself. [Will Robertson] was unsatisfied with the stock headphones that came with his HTC phone, but didn&#8217;t want to lose the control interface when upgrading. He built this <a href="http://willrobertson.id.au/projects/htcheadphone/">add-on that lets him control the Android music player</a>.</p>
<p>He was inspired to do this after <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/11/03/patching-into-android-music-control/">reading about the control interface in one of our previous features</a>. That hack detailed how to add control based on the 4-conductor headphone jack, but didn&#8217;t see us through to a clean finished product. [Will] picked up where it left off by designing a sleek surface mount board that hosts a headphone jack and three tactile switches. A patch cable is soldered opposite the jack, making this work as a pass-through device. The icing on the cake is the shrink tubing that masks the fact that this is a diy dongle.</p>
<p>If you want to follow his lead, [Will] posted his EagleCAD design files and footprints for the components he used in the post linked at the top.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a way to <a href="http://teholabs.com/docs/bluescripts:overview">gain control of your projects using an Android device</a>. Bluescripts is a free app available in the Android market that makes it a bit easier to make interfaces to send customizable messages. If you have a Bluetooth receiver in your project, connecting to it is as easy as putting the MAC address into an XML file on the Android device. Each tag in that file has a name, as well as the address of the target and the message that should be sent. On the receiving end, you just need to make sure your project hardware is ready to receive an ASCII message and act based on what comes through.</p>
<p>Check out the demonstration video after the break. Perhaps it&#8217;s not as cool as you could do if you were <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/07/12/android-development-101-%E2%80%93-a-tutorial-series/">writing your own Android program</a>, but we can&#8217;t think of anything we&#8217;ve seen that makes an Android interface this quick and easy.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a look at <a href="http://www.wisebread.com/build-a-cable-to-control-your-android-phone-while-you-drive">the TRRS cable</a> that Android phones use. [Rich Kappmeier] want to control the music player on his Nexus One while driving. It&#8217;s not necessarily a safe endeavor if you&#8217;re staring at the screen and poking away with one hand while trying to stay in your lane. A little bit of research helped him figure out how the hardware in a headphone controller worked and he decided to incorporate that into a connector cable for the car.</p>
<p>The control signals rely on a specific resistance between the TRRS function ring and ground. Once he worked out the chart above and targeted the correct resistance values he built a rocker switch for Fast Forward and Reverse, as well as a Play/Pause button into the connector cable. You should be able to use this for more than just music control. Which means you can now use a standard R/C remote control to fly model aircrafts on your computer. Of course now with PPM decoded you could also use the signal to control any electronic device. <p>While we&#8217;ve been told all of our lives Wiis and trains just don&#8217;t mix, they never said anything about Wii Nunchuks. One terribly abused joke later, [Ken] tipped us off about his <a href="http://dawson-station.blogspot.com/2010/01/wii-nunchuk-train-control.html">Wii Nunchuk controlled train set</a>.</p>
<p>By utilizing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Command_Control">Digital Command Control</a> (think pulse-width modulation) with an Arduino, he is able to have full control over the trains direction and speed. The other part of the equation is a Wii Nunchuk and <a href="http://todbot.com/blog/2008/02/18/wiichuck-wii-nunchuck-adapter-available/">adapter</a>. The setup should be pretty self explanatory, but there is <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Wii-Nunchuk-Controlled-Model-Train/">an Instructable</a> for those that need more help.</p>

<p>We honestly never thought we would see an<a href="http://tree.schwippy.com/2009/"> internet controlled Christmas tree</a> before, sure maybe a <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/27/remote-controlled-claw-of-doom/">remote controlled claw</a> or <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/22/score-online-with-robot-soccer/">online soccer robots</a>, but a tree? Regardless, team [Schwippy] did just that. 5 separate sets of lights are connected to 5 individual <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X10_%28industry_standard%29">x10 modules</a>. The x10s are listening over the household&#8217;s AC lines for commands from a server in the other room, with its own x10. At about 12$ a module, the project can get expensive quick, totalling over 200$ for <a href="http://plasma2002.com/tree/">[Schwippy's] setup</a>. Just to control a tree, but anything to spread the holiday cheer, right?<br />

But at the end of the day, what if you want something that&#8217;s small, simple, has amazing flexibility for future additions, and most importantly doesn&#8217;t take away your favorite game system. <p>We were a little surprised when we learned the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_RX-7">Mazda RX7&#8242;s</a> high beams were controlled by ECU, compared to typical cars using just a toggle switch. <a href="http://ubermodder.com/">Ubermodder</a> [Trent Bruce] realized how much of a pain in the rear end this can be if the ECU ever burns out, meaning no brights. By using a D-Flip Flop setup in a toggle configuration, he is able to <a href="http://ubermodder.com/rx7-headlight-circuit-fix/">control his once lost high beams</a>. He also points out that if you plan to do any other electronic modifications to the RX7, you should be sure to pay attention to the unusual ground switching and the other crazy wiring under the hood.</p>

This video goes over the basics of DC motor control with microcontrollers. They begin by showing nine experiments and observations that can be done by the average hacker with a multimeter, motor, LED, and jumperwire. Using the results from these they show how to model and calculate the properties of a motor. Lastly, it shows how to control a motor using PWM. They have <a href="http://www.nerdkits.com/videos/motors_and_microcontrollers_101/">supplemental text and demonstration code for an ATmega168</a> on their website.</p>

<p>Remember those days, back in the arcade, where games with a unique control scheme also had a controller best suited for them? There were rolling balls, joysticks, dials, all sorts of inputs. Consoles have maily relied on their standard controllers, relegating alternative inputs to be strange collectors items. Some games just need a specialized controller though. For example, Katamari Damacy.<a href="http://www.kellbot.com/2009/05/life-size-katamari-lives/"> [Kellbot] has made one</a> that we think suits the game very well. </p>

We&#8217;ve covered similar interfaces like the <a href="http://www.hackaday.com/2006/04/22/mf2006-monome/">monome</a>, <a href="http://www.hackaday.com/2008/06/05/building-a-midibox-sid/">MIDIbox</a>, and <a href="http://www.hackaday.com/2008/05/05/maker-faire-2008-stribe-music-controller/">Stribe</a>. Machinecollective allows you to make your own input system using multiple blocks to get exactly what you want. The setup allows you to fit pretty much anything in a block that you can think of. They&#8217;re developing potentiometers, slide potentiometers, button grids, toggle switches, LCD&#8217;s, FSR/LDR&#8217;s, velocity sensitive pads, and touch screens. </p>
<p>Currently, they support software enviroments like: <a href="http://processing.org/">Processing</a>, <a href="http://www.cycling74.com/">Max/MSP</a>, <a href="http://www.vvvv.org/tiki-index.php">VVVV</a>, and <a href="http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/">Adobe Flash</a>. That list will undoubtedly grow as the community plays with it. They envision the hardware connecting via MIDI, OSC, RS232, TCP/UDP, DMX, or USB.</p>
<p>They encourage others to design their own inputs. Community members can share modifications and designs, though there isn&#8217;t a forum or store yet. If you design a setup that you really like, they can even fabricate a single unit for you. Keep your eyes on this one, it could be a real hit.</p>
<p>A similar idea for general gadgetry can be seen over at <a href="http://www.buglabs.net/">Bug Labs</a>. Starting with a base unit, you can add different input and output modules to create various useful functions. They currently offer GPS, a camera, a display, and motion sensing. Mix and match to make your dream gadget.</p>
