<p>For those of us who can&#8217;t be bothered to dig out or N64 whenever we want to play <em>Ocarina of Time</em> or our NES whenever we get the urge to play <em>Battletoads</em>, emulators are a godsend. There is a problem, though. A keyboard doesn&#8217;t provide the right experience as a the classic NES &#8216;brick&#8217; or the N64 tritopus controllers. Enter the <a href="http://www.gadgetgangster.com/news/54/518">Funtendo</a>, a breakout box that converts all your well-loved controllers to USB.</p>
<p>The Funtendo uses the Gadget Gangster <a href="http://www.gadgetgangster.com/find-a-project/56.html?projectnum=257">Propeller Platform</a> with a terminal block module. Putting together the electronics is fairly easy; just strip the ends of the controllers and screw them down to the terminal blocks. N64, NES and Wii Classic Controllers are supported by the Funtendo. Going for the Classic Controller over a Super Nintendo controller reduces the complexity of the build. The Classic Controller can play SNES games and uses an I2C bus, making it easier to wire.</p>
<p>For interfacing the controllers to the computer, the <a href="http://www.parallax.com/ProductInfo/Microcontrollers/PropellerGeneralInformation/PropellerMediaPage/tabid/832/Default.aspx">Parallax Propeller Tool</a>, Parallax serial terminal, and <a href="http://ppjoy.bossstation.dnsalias.org/">PPJoy</a> convert button mashing into readable buttons for the emulator. The build may take more time than pulling an NES out of the attic, but even with a large project box it takes up much less space.</p>

<p>[Kekszumquadrat] wanted to use a classic controller to play emulator games on his Android tablet so he set out to convert an SNES gamepad to connect via USB. He found an old USB keyboard at a yard sale for about 3 Euros. He knew that the emulator he prefers has the option of remapping all the inputs to keyboard keys which means a USB keyboard has all of the electronics he would need to pull this off.</p>
<p>Once he had separated the keyboard circuitry from the case [Kekszumquadrat] plugged it into his Linux box and used Xev to establish how the keyboard matrix is set up. Xev is a common package that opens up an active window on the X desktop. When run from command line, any events that happen to the window will be echoed along with verbose data about that event. When it comes to keypresses, you&#8217;ll get the keycode you need. He simply shorted columns and rows until he found the desired mapping, then it was on to soldering.</p>
<p>The SNES controllers are very simple devices. As we&#8217;ve seen <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/09/08/arcade-controller-in-a-box/">with previous projects</a>, they use a serial-to-parallel shift register to gather button data and send it to the console. [Kekszumquadrat] simply soldered between button traces and keyboard matrix contacts. Once he finished, the keyboard parts were tucked inside of the controller case and he&#8217;s left with a USB controller that appears to be unaltered.</p>

<p>[Rich's] newest version of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp8Oon93Ckc">a Bluetooth connected Super Nintendo controller</a> takes what was already good and makes it better. We looked at <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/05/17/bluetooth-super-nintendo-controller-for-android-gaming/">the original version</a> back in May, which is built into a knockoff controller  &#8211; [Rich] mentions that he got a lot of flack for defacing retro equipment and wants to set the record straight. The most notable difference between the two controllers is that the batteries are now housed inside the case. He switched over to an 850 mAh Lithium Ion battery, which takes much less room than the four AA batteries did. There is an integrated charger which connects via a mini USB jack as seen in the image above. Bother versions of the controller can be used to play emulators without rooting your Android device.</p>
<p>Unfortunately you won&#8217;t get to look inside the case. What we can tell you is that the build no longer uses a BlueSMiRF board , opting for a less expensive Bluetooth solution. We also know that the build is still Arduino compatible, sporting an ATmega328 chip running the bootloader. The lack of detail is because [Rich] is working to market the controller with a limited-quantity preorder. Check out his video presentation of the new version after the break.</p>

<p>[Luke] wanted an arcade-style controller that he could use for some gaming at home. He decided to use a portable game emulator as a base and then <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_LXGtnWSkQ">added his own joystick and buttons along with a custom case</a>.</p>
<p>The donor hardware is a Dingo A320. It&#8217;s a nice little handheld with a 2.8&#8243; screen, and plenty of potential to emulate games like Donkey Kong seen above, or to play homebrew. It&#8217;s even been <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/06/10/dingoo-a320-ram-upgrade/">the target of some RAM upgrades</a> we looked in on in the past. The best part for [Luke's] project is that it includes a video out port.</p>
<p>In the clip after the break you can see that [Luke] now has a compact controller with a huge arcade joystick, four buttons on the top surface, and the rest of the controls all around the edges of the enclosure. The video out option is selected in the menu system, so he preserved the original LCD for use during configuration.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve been following the <a href="http://www.retrode.org/">Retrode</a> since it was an <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/06/19/usb-reader-for-snes-game-carts/">obscure video on YouTube</a> that we swore was an elaborate hoax. Now, [Matthias] tell us it&#8217;s getting its third major upgrade, and it is really starting to resemble a commercial project. The video features the new prototype case for the Retrode II, which has been <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/">3d printed</a>. The fact that such advanced protyping facilities are availavble to the common hacker is just incredible.  The new Retrode II will have ports built in so SEGA and SNES controllers can be plugged in. Since its launch the community has been collaborating to build <a href="http://www.retrode.org/plug-in-adapters/">plug-in boards</a> allowing people to play Virtual Boy, Atari 2600, GBx, Turbografix-16, <a href="http://ponrevival.blogspot.com/2011/01/retrodeplug-in-neogeopocket-adapter.html">Neo Geo Pocket,</a> and even N-64 cartridges directly from the cartridge on their computers. Very Cool.</p>

<p>[Hunter Davis] is playing games like Contra, Monkey Island, and Quake 3 by <a href="http://hunterdavis.com/archives/843">running them on a Seagate Dockstar</a>. We were shocked after seeing how well these run in the video after the break. [Hunter], who <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/09/03/nes-on-zipit/">used the ZipIt for game emulation</a> in the past, added a couple of hardware peripherals to get everything running. For sound he picked up an inexpensive USB sound card which was no problem to get up and running. Next he picked up a USB to DVI adapter and fired up <a href="http://libdlo.freedesktop.org/wiki/">the Linux USB DisplayLink driver</a>. With the peripherals running he loaded up Fluxbox and the rest was history. Not bad for <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/07/17/openwrt-on-a-seagate-freeagent-dockstar/">a small network storage adapter</a>.<span id="more-32363"></span></p>

<p>Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.vk1zdj.net/?p=47">a field-programmable RFID spoofer</a> developed by [Doug Jackson]. He was <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/09/25/rfid-readers-writers-and-spoofers/">inspired by the spoofers we looked</a> at near the end of September that didn&#8217;t have source code available. With the idea seeded in his mind he figured he could develop his own version, and then <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Universal-RFID-Key">decided to share the build details with the rest of us</a>.</p>
<p>The tags that he purchased for testing and developing the spoofer have a code printed on the back of them. A bit of sleuthing at the data from a tag reader and he managed to crack the code. From there he built this tag spoofer with a keypad on which you enter the number from the back of any 125 kHz tag and the device becomes that tag. If you have been waiting to test your RFID hacking skills there should be nothing holding you back now that [Doug] shared the details of his own adventure.</p>

<p>[Sprite_TM] cooked up an amazing hack by <a href="http://spritesmods.com/?art=macsearm">resurrecting a Mac SE using a Dockstar and ARM processor</a>. The retro hardware had a bad mainboard thanks to the corrosive properties of a failed backup-battery. He had been wanting to do something with <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/10/04/more-openwrt-image-building-for-the-dockstar/">the Seagate Dockstar</a> and decided it would find a nice home in the Mac. But what fun is a dead machine housing a headless server? To add to the fun he included an ARM processor running a Mac emulator, along with all the bits to make the screen, keyboard, and peripherals work. When the Mac is off the Dockstar still runs as a server.</p>
<p>But one of the best parts is the floppy drive. It still takes floppies, but there&#8217;s no magnetic media inside of them anymore. Instead, he&#8217;s added an SD card slot and some protoboard in the space for the read head. The drive itself has had the read head transplanted for some pogo pins (hey, <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/11/04/test-beds-and-jigs-with-pogo-pins/">we saw those earlier today</a>). When you insert the floppy, the pogo-pins raise up and contact the protoboard, connecting the SD card to a Teensy microcontroller.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s so much going on with this project we just can&#8217;t cover it all here. Things like a chemical cleaning to return the original color of the classic case, and building a converter so that the peripherals are USB compatible are just some of the pleasures awaiting you in [Sprite_TM's] post. He&#8217;s also filmed a demo video that we&#8217;ve embedded after the break.</p>

<p>The Dell Streak is an Android tablet. [Collin Meyer] wanted to use an original SNES controller to play emulated games on the device. What he came up with is <a href="http://devdot.wikispaces.com/Dell+Streak+USB+Host+and+Game+Controller+Tutorial">a controller that is a dock for he handheld</a>.</p>
<p>Several things have to come together to make this happen. The Streak uses a standard PDMI dock that connects to a computer via a USB connection. [Collin] repurposed a sync cable by connecting a couple of pins on the dock connector which forces the device to use USB host mode. From there he used a Teensy microcontroller to convert the SNES controller into a USB device (very similar to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/04/09/snes-controller-usb-accelerometer/">this hack</a>). The Teensy and shortened sync cable find a new home inside the SNES controller body and, in the video after the break, it looks like he used <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/10/11/oogoo-a-home-made-sugru-substitute/">something like sugru</a> to add a bit of support for the Streak.</p>

<p>Processsing has come to Android. [Jer] posted a guide to setting up the software and <a href="http://blog.blprnt.com/blog/blprnt/processing-android-mobile-app-development-made-very-easy">coding your first Processing app for Android</a>. The module which supports Google&#8217;s mobile operating system is not yet part of the stable Processing release but it works and is <a href="http://code.google.com/p/processing/downloads/list">available to download and use</a>. It provides support for Android version 2.1 and newer, playing nicely with the SDK to emulate your sketches during development. The Hello World app seen above uses just a few lines of code to draw a white box on an orange background. After you&#8217;ve installed and tested the tools you&#8217;ll be developing in no time.</p>
<p>This makes a great addition to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/07/12/android-development-101-%e2%80%93-a-tutorial-series/">your Android development tool bag</a>.</p>

<p>[Sk3tch] rigged up a way to <a href="http://github.com/sk3tch/android-arduino-nes-controller">use an original NES controller with Android</a>. He bought the controller and a breakout board for it at DEFCON. By combining the controller, an Arduino, and a <a href="http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=582">blueSMIRF BlueTooth module</a> the controller can be used as a keyboard on his Android device. In the video after the break he demonstrates pairing the devices and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 in an emulator.</p>
<p>He calls this Alpha quality but it certainly looks like it works well. In the beta version we&#8217;d love to see all of the extra electronics inside the controller case like <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/07/19/usb-nes-controller-plus/">those USB mods</a>.</p>

<p>Tired of messing with the hardware of the Didj you picked up? Now you can use it for gaming on that last road trip of the summer. A <a href="http://elinux.org/Didj_gpSP_GBA_Emulator">Game Boy Advanced emulator has been ported</a> for use on both the Didj and the Explorer. You&#8217;ll have to dig up a copy of the original bios for a GBA as well as some ROMs, but the rest seems pretty straight forward. We are still holding out hope for <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/05/13/opengl-on-the-didj/">Doom or Quake on the Didj</a>, but this will help us wait a bit longer.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve got an iPhone or Android device that you use with a Wii remote when gaming, this quick hack will give you the third hand you need to manage all of that hardware. [Syanni85] <a href="http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=129886">mounted his Android phone to a Wii wheel</a> for just a few dollars in parts. He ran across the wheel itself at the dollar store, and the phone is held in place using a universal mounting bracket. A small square pad sticks onto the back of any device and mates with a base. He cut off the unnecessary parts of the base and glued it to the back of the wheel.</p>

<p>[Retromaster's] <a href="http://retromaster.wordpress.com/ufe/">Ultimate Floppy Emulator</a> is a wicked display of hardware mastery. It is the culmination of several design stages aimed at replacing an Amiga floppy drive with a modern storage solution. You may be thinking that using an SD card in place of a floppy isn&#8217;t all that interesting but this hack does much more. The board, controlled by a PIC32, patches into the Amiga keyboard and monitor. This allows you to bring up an overlay menu for controlling the emulator in order to configure which virtual floppy disk is currently &#8216;in the drive&#8217;. He&#8217;s even gone so far as to add a piezo speaker to mimic the sounds the original drive head would make while reading a disk.</p>

Looking through his build photos we love the clean and resilient construction which includes a breakout board for the PIC 32MX795F512H that interfaces with the main board via pin headers and sockets. He&#8217;s using a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/stryco_jarin/4434739863/in/set-72157623500433717/">home-built keyboard</a> and a 4&#215;40 character display but there is also the option to communicate with the device over an RS232 connection. Oh, and yes it plays <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zork">Zork</a>, which seems to be the benchmark whether you are emulating <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/04/27/emulating-a-z80-computer-with-an-avr-chip/">a Z80 with AVR hardware</a>, or if you <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/30/processor-built-with-transistor-transistor-logic/">built one from transistor-transistor logic</a>.</p>
