<p>You won&#8217;t find [Antoine] stumbling around in the dark. He just finished working on this <a href="http://lafamillecreative.blogspot.com/2011/12/une-lampe-de-poche-immortelle.html">LED flashlight which draws power from a super-capacitor</a> (<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Flafamillecreative.blogspot.com%2F2011%2F12%2Fune-lampe-de-poche-immortelle.html">translated</a>). He realized that lighting a high-efficiency LED takes so little power that there are many benefits in play when deciding to move away from batteries. When compared to a super capacitor, batteries have a shorter life span, are heavier, and take up more space.</p>
<p>The biggest drawback of a super capacitor in this situation is the low voltage operation. The output will start at 2.7V and drop as the current is discharged. [Antoine] used one of our favorite simple circuits to overcome this issue, the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2007/10/10/joule-thief-led-driver/">Joule Thief</a>. That circuit is commonly seen paired with an LED in order to boost input voltage to a usable level. That&#8217;s precisely what&#8217;s going on here.</p>
<p>The final hack in his circuit is the addition of that red LED which you can see in the middle of the board. This takes the place of a Zener diode and drops the charging voltage to a safe level. That indicator light will not come on until the cap is fully topped off. This way it tells you when the device is done charging.</p>

<p>[Cameron] decided to give his twenty-year-old headlamp a makeover. He uses it when he&#8217;s out for a run and wanted to have more light to see where he&#8217;s going, as well as a red tail light on the back. The stock design uses an incandescent bulb on the front of the head band, and a battery pack on the back. He managed to <a href="http://cameroncharles.blogspot.com/2012/01/petzl-zoom-led-conversion-final-chapter.html">convert the device to output 700 lumens</a> without major changes to the form factor of the unit.</p>
<p>The first change he decided on is to use a Cree XLamp which provides the 700 lumens of light by drawing about 9.5 Watts of power. Obviously the original battery pack isn&#8217;t going to do well under that kind of load, so he also sourced a 5000 mAh Lithium battery. A bit of circuit design and PCB layout gives him two driver chips for the four-element LED module, a charging circuit for the battery, and an ATtiny13 to drive the head lamp and flash the red LED tail light. <p>Flashlights are so 20th Century. Be it the incandescent type that popped up very early on, or LED models with came around in the 90&#8242;s, there&#8217;s not much excitement to the devices. But [Sriranjan Rasakatla] is doing his best to change that. <a href="http://sriranjan.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/way-go-torch-an-intelligent-robotic-flash-light/">This is his WAY-GO Torch</a>, an intelligent flashlight (a Smart Light?) that will not just light your path, but overlay useful data on it.</p>
<p>At the front of the unit a pico projector is housed on a jointed assembly. This allows the device to project data on the ground in front of you. Using a digital compass and GPS module, it can show the polar coordinates, guide you on your way, or provide information about the buildings around you. The motorized mount provides image stabilization based on IMU data. Check out the demonstration video after the break. It shows general functionality in the first part of the clip, with some footage of the stabilization system at about 4:30.</p>
<p>This really does seem like it came right out of a Sci-Fi novel. It&#8217;s useful, but the complexity makes it surprising that [Sriranjan] was able to pull it off. We wonder how the battery life is on the device, but it can&#8217;t be any worse that <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/03/26/thats-a-big-flashlight/">one of those really huge flashlight builds</a>.</p>

<p>[Dominik’s] daughter had <a href="http://scalotta.tumblr.com/post/10269199756/no-batteries" target="_blank">an old toy piano that she loved</a>, but when the batteries started to die down, it played awful tones and sounded generally out of tune. While this is likely something our circuit bending friends might be interested in, [Dominik] preferred when things sounded more cheery.</p>
<p>He considered simply replacing the batteries, but it seemed like a far better idea to do away with them altogether. he hunted around for a solution, and eventually found one at the local IKEA store. He grabbed a LJUSA hand-powered flashlight and disassembled it, saving the crank and circuitry.</p>
<p>He installed the crank on the back side of his daughter’s piano, and mounted the electronic bits inside the toy’s shell. The crank spins a brushless motor, generating an AC current which is rectified to DC before being stored in a capacitor. He says that a 30 second crank will play just a few tunes, which isn’t ideal, though it is better than frequently replacing batteries.</p>

<p>Although not everyone has the ability to make a hacked <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jny5ZGEzBtw">Pong game</a> Like [Marcelo], even fewer have the ability or the creativity to come up with the elaborate hack that he did. The basic premise of his game is a version of pong played on a breadboard with a 8&#215;8 matrix of LEDs. The controls are really what sets this hack apart. Instead of using a paddle controller or normal switches, small flashlights are used to control the on-screen (on-LED matrix) paddle. This is accomplished using a series of photoresistors and a PIC processor.</p>
<p>Innovative as this would be by itself, [Marcelo] decided to make a program in Flash to display the action on a computer.  Communication is done serially, and C# is used to translate everything as Flash doesn&#8217;t natively work with a serial connection.</p>
<p>Another innovation is that there are two LEDs connected on either side powered via pulse width modulation. The lights get dimmer as one player is about to lose. Check out [Marcelo's] pong game after the break!</p>

<p>[Holzleim's] <a href="http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?221261-Handheld-500W-LED-Power-....-finally-finished-(Beamshots-added)">flashlight build is quite impressive</a>. And the rise and fall of the hardware is quite a story. He designed it as a handheld light, relying on batteries to power a multitude of high-power LEDs inside.From the collection of four 5350 mAh lithium polymer cells he was able to achieve a peak power output that surpasses 500 Watts!</p>
<p>Projects that <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/09/03/700-lumen-led-bike-lamp/">make use of these powerful LED modules</a> have heat dissipation as a major design element. With this in mind, [Holzleim] used large bars of copper as a mounting surface for each group of modules. The size and thickness of these bars made it difficult to use traditional soldering techniques to affix the bodies of the modules so he ended up using a clothes iron to ramp up the temperature high enough to reflow the solder. Once mounted, most of the LEDs were paired with optics, including that Fresnel lens at the center, to help focus the light.</p>
<p>To keep the batteries topped off, [Holzleim] designed his own external charger which can run off of mains or from a car&#8217;s electrical system. Unfortunately he must not have included a way to monitor the battery temperature because one of the cells failed, causing a fire that burnt out the components inside the flashlight. Luckily his wife was home at the time and got the failing device outside where it didn&#8217;t cause more damage. We&#8217;ve linked to his posts regarding the charging system, the properly functioning light burning paper with its beam intensity, and his sad announcement about the fire after the break.</p>

This is a great resource if you&#8217;re needing to do some night vision for cheap.</p>

<p>[Robbtoberfest] has earned our admiration with this <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Chainsaw-flashlight-gas-engine-powered-spotlight/">crazy chainsaw powered spot light</a>. It looks horribly dangerous, extremely inefficient, and woefully under engineered. We absolutely love it. This could be plucked from a video game or a movie and seems to be one UV bulb away from being the ultimate post apocalyptic zombie vampire Armageddon weapon. He has taken apart a chainsaw and attached it to a DC treadmill motor using a couple of bike sprockets and a chain. That DC motor then feeds a car headlight directly. As you can see in the video, when he cranks the gas, it shines pretty brightly. The unfinished nature of this is due to a deadline for <a href="http://www.instructables.com/contest/flashlight/">a contest on instructables</a>, so he plans on adding a protective cowl, some fancy paint work, and a voltage regulator down the road.</p>
<p>While this may be inefficient, it is certainly a step up from a <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/12/29/steam-powered-spud-gun/">steam powered spud gun</a>.</p>

<p>Building an LED flashlight is simple, right? Take a battery, connect it to an LED by way of a resistor. Alright wise guy, now make one that steps up the voltage for multiple LEDs and don&#8217;t use a boost-converter IC to do so.</p>
<p>[fede.tft] shares <a href="http://www.webalice.it/fede.tft/torcia/torcia.html">a flashlight built inside of a  used glue stick case</a>. It&#8217;s the perfect size for one AA battery (we&#8217;re always on the lookout for <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/02/04/battery-holder-reuses-blister-pack/">good battery cases</a>), and a shape that we&#8217;re familiar with as a flashlight. The problem is that he wants two white LEDs but with just one AA cell he&#8217;s never going to have more that 1.5V available. He licked that problem, getting to 7.2V by designing his own step-up converter using one transistor, an inductor, and three passive components. To get the inductor he needs, a stock part is disassembled and rewound to suit. Maybe you just end up with a flashlight when all is said and done, but then again, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistine_chapel">Sistine Chapel</a> is just some paintings on a ceiling.</p>

<p>When [Neelandan]&#8216;s cheap flashlight&#8217;s internal rechargeable battery died, he scrounged for a replacement. Ultimately, the brightness of the light suffered with his new battery, taken from an old cell phone since he had dropped the voltage a bit. Upon inspection he saw that he would have to swap the individual resistors for each lamp to get the desired brightness again. This wasn&#8217;t really acceptable as he would have to repeat the process if he used another re-purposed battery with different specs. Instead, he <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Switch-mode-LED-torch/">added a new circuit to supply constant brightness until the voltage drops below 2.7 volts</a>. We love to see hardware resurrected, even if it is just a cheap LED flashlight.</p>

<p>Going camping? You&#8217;ll need an extra backpack to carry <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkkU0UO3sek">this flashlight</a> along the way. On the business end you&#8217;ll find 500 five millimeter super-bright white LEDs, on the opposite end there&#8217;s ten times the number of controls you&#8217;d expect on a flashlight. At full power, the LED array pulls down 50 Watts, making us question the battery life of the unit. Check out the walk-through after the break. The LEDs are mounted on proto-board, making for some extreme point-to-point soldering. During the control demonstration there&#8217;s a background noise like a jet powering up, what&#8217;s that all about?</p>
<p>While this terrific torch brings a grin to our faces, we wonder if it wouldn&#8217;t do better as <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/22/unreasonably-bright-bike-light-apparently-hunts-deer/">a vehicle mounted illuminator</a>. Or if a microcontroller was tossed into the mix some creative code could make this a pretty powerful yet <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/09/28/open-source-weapon-makes-you-puke/">non-lethal weapon</a>.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a quick and easy <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/umbrella-light/">illuminated umbrella</a> that [Mikeasaurus] built. How&#8217;s this for economical? He found an umbrella that someone left on the bus, and used an LED flashlight and clear poncho from the dollar store for the rest of the parts.</p>
<p>The scavenged LED circuit board is the perfect diameter to fit inside the handle of his umbrella. He removed the middle LED and drilled a hole in the board for the shaft to pass through. Although not well detailed, we gather he managed to shoehorn two CR2032 3v batteries underneath the PCB to power the device. The poncho is wrapped around the shaft to diffuse the light. This is a clever solution as the flexible plastic still allows the telescoping shaft to collapse down to its most compact size.</p>
<p>[Mikasaurus'] umbrella doesn&#8217;t <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/04/12/spatialized-umbrella/">make noise</a> or <a href="http://hackaday.com/2007/03/09/world-weather-umbrella/">emulate the weather</a> but it is a clever idea. The low difficulty level and availability of parts makes this a great project to do with the young ones who don&#8217;t get included in your more intricate hacks.</p>

At 182 mW there is enough power here to pop dark colored balloons (see the video after the break). To make this happen, he found an LED flashlight that has rubber o-rings for waterproofing. Although small, there is enough space in the case to house the battery, driver, and laser diode. A thick ring of aluminum is placed around the laser diode to act as heat sink.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll admit, we don&#8217;t know that much about lasers. This is probably the wrong question to ask, but now that he has this what do you do with it? Leave us a comment about your plans for this diabolical creation.</p>

Whatever your feelings, there’s no denying this device has become a staple of the DIY hacking crowd, as evidenced by the countless <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/08/17/adafruit-releases-new-tv-b-gone-kit/">derivatives</a> <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/07/04/world-smallest-tv-b-gone/">since</a> <a href="http://hackaday.com/2005/04/28/tv-b-gone-now-b-a-cellphone/">hatched</a>. This latest mutation crushes them all.</p>
<p>[manekinen] from the Polish electronics blog <a href="http://www.elektroda.pl/">Elektroda</a> (“Electrode”) wasn’t satisfied with high-power TV-B-Gone designs using multiple 5mm infrared LEDs, so he created his own using a single one-Watt monster. The device is concealed in an ordinary <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/04/06/spider-fire-flashlight-upgrade/">flashlight</a> casing, making it somewhat inconspicuous. A custom PCB containing an ultra-minimalist version of the TV-B-Gone circuitry sits just behind the reflector. The choice of reflectors determined maximum distance vs. coverage…they opted for distance. Specific figures aren’t given, but we estimate this thing could shut off televisions on Mars.</p>
<p>The original article (<a href="http://diy.elektroda.eu/?p=514">Polish</a> or <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=pl&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http://diy.elektroda.eu/%3Fp%3D514">Google-ized Englis</a>h) includes construction photos and an archive (.rar) of project files including Eagle schematics and C source code.</p>
<p>Would it be totally irresponsible to mention there’s now a 3-Watt version of this LED? We’re just sayin’.</p>

<p>[PodeCoet] sent in this <a href="http://podecoet.org/tutorials/uberCREE/">mod he did to a Spider Fire flashlight</a>. These things are unbelievably bright, they use Cree LEDs that are so intense, they can ignite paper. [PodeCoet] notes that they run on fairly expensive batteries. Instead of buying some rechargeable ones, he decided to customize and hack his torch. He added a custom charging circuit and a Lilon battery as well as a boost-converter circuit and a status LED.  We like the idea of having a rechargeable lamp, but he has lost his water proofing. If anything, you should go there to see his nicely done smd charger pcb as well as the pictures of his test run, burning some paper.</p>
<p>As some people have pointed out in the comments, this flashlight could not have started that fire. <a href="http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/Wicked_Lights-74-0.html">This one could though</a>.</p>
