<p>The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/the-verbalizer-is-the-open-source-wireless-microphone-of-your-ar/">Verbalizer</a> is a microphone designed to be used with Google&#8217;s voice search. It&#8217;s also designed with Arduino compatibility in mind and is open-source. Could be a good tool for your next hack.</p>

<p>These clever <a href="http://johnsexploits.blogspot.com/2011/07/best-multimeter-probes-i-own.html">multimeter probes</a> were built using <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogo_pin">pogo pins</a> used in electrical test equipment. The springs inside of these pins help keep them planted firmly on the test point in question and reportedly gives a very good connection.</p>

<p>[kgsws] just finished his Game Boy upgrade that allows him to load games from an SD card. Loading a game off an SD card has been done before, but [kgsws] decided to not to use a cartridge-based device. In the end, he threw out all the stops and finished his project by having the <a href="http://zdoom.ic.cz/gameboy.html">Game Boy access an SD card directly</a>.</p>
<p>[kgsws] his project trying to figure out how to put some GPIO pins on a game cartridge, but figured that this would take too much hardware. After looking at the specs of the link port, he realized that it was the wrong polarity. Not to be deterred, [kgsws] realized that there was something <em>like</em> a general-purpose I/O on the Game Boy &#8211; the <a href="http://gbdev.gg8.se/wiki/articles/Joypad_Input">joypad input</a>.</p>
<p><span id="more-47774"></span></p>
<p>After figuring out the logic of accessing the SD card through the joypad, [kgsws] set to work building a FAT32 parser and a simple BIOS on an EEPROM. The entire system runs off an ATmega32, and he was kind enough to include the <a class="hoverZoomLink" href="http://zdoom.ic.cz/sdgb/sdgb.png">schematics</a> and <a href="http://zdoom.ic.cz/sdgb.zip">all the code</a>. The end result is really neat &#8211; it can load and save 512kB Game Boy ROMs and save data, read .txt files. As an added bonus [kgsws] put in a custom boot logo to replace the top-scrolling Nintendo logo.</p>
<p>While the joypad buttons don&#8217;t work when the SD card is being accessed, and the battery draw is larger than the already power-hungry DMG-001, we&#8217;re amazed by [kgsws]&#8216;s hardware hackery. Check out the video of [kgsws]&#8216;s hack below.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve been following the <a href="http://www.retrode.org/">Retrode</a> since it was an <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/06/19/usb-reader-for-snes-game-carts/">obscure video on YouTube</a> that we swore was an elaborate hoax. Now, [Matthias] tell us it&#8217;s getting its third major upgrade, and it is really starting to resemble a commercial project. The video features the new prototype case for the Retrode II, which has been <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/">3d printed</a>. The fact that such advanced protyping facilities are availavble to the common hacker is just incredible.  The new Retrode II will have ports built in so SEGA and SNES controllers can be plugged in. Since its launch the community has been collaborating to build <a href="http://www.retrode.org/plug-in-adapters/">plug-in boards</a> allowing people to play Virtual Boy, Atari 2600, GBx, Turbografix-16, <a href="http://ponrevival.blogspot.com/2011/01/retrodeplug-in-neogeopocket-adapter.html">Neo Geo Pocket,</a> and even N-64 cartridges directly from the cartridge on their computers. Very Cool.</p>

<p>[Alex] collects retro gaming consoles. One day while playing a SNES title, his save games got wiped when he powered off the system. It turned out that the battery inside the game cartridge got disconnected somehow, and it got him thinking. He decided he wanted to find a way to back up his save games from the cartridges for safe keeping.</p>
<p>While cart readers exist, he says that they are hard to find nowadays, so he decided to construct his own using an Arduino. SNES cartridges are relatively complex, so he opted to focus on Gameboy cartridges for the time being. Before attempting to back up save games, he first chose to learn how to communicate with the cartridges in general, <a href="http://www.insidegadgets.com/2011/03/19/gbcartread-arduino-based-gameboy-cart-reader-%E2%80%93-part-1-read-the-rom/" target="_blank">by reading the ROM</a>.</p>
<p>He breaks the cartridges down in detail, discussing how they are constructed as well as how they can be addressed and read using the Arduino. He was ultimately successful, and offers up code as well as schematics on his site for any of you interested in doing the same. We imagine that save game reading (and perhaps editing) will likely happen in the near future.</p>

<p>[Craig] has taken his gameboy hackery to the next step, <a href="http://flashingleds.wordpress.com/2011/02/13/nintendoscope/">using an oscilloscope as an external display</a>. Back in November of 2010 [Craig] showed us how to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/11/10/diving-deep-into-the-game-boy-lcd-protocol/">extract the video data from a classic gameboy&#8217;s screen</a>, armed with that information, and a pretty powerful XMega128A1 controller it seems straightforward to process that data and output it onto a oscilloscope that is in XY(z) mode, especially since he has done all of the hard work for us.</p>
<p>Scopes that feature XY mode typically have a Z input on the back, X controls where the beam is positioned from left to right, Y controls the beam from top to bottom, and Z controls the intensity of the beam. By sweeping the X and Y to act as lines, and Z to control the shade of the beam, its fairly easy to reuse your typically vector display as a raster display similar to televisions or computer monitors (as long as you have your math and timing right), making scopes very useful as output displays for devices like the gameboy, which do not have “standards” friendly display systems.</p>

<p>Ever find yourself in the middle of a Game Boy game and your hand cramps up?  Save that sore wrist for something else because now you can <a href="http://bit.ly/HWGBARF">hack the Game Boy Advance to add Rapid Fire for the B button</a>.  [William] has developed a way to do this by creating a simple circuit that generates a square wave on the B button when it is pressed.  To do this hack all that was needed was a short shopping list of:</p>
<ul>
<li>A Couple NAND Gate ICs</li>
<li>2n2222 NPN Transistor</li>
<li>0.1uF ceramic capacitor</li>
<li>A Switch</li>
<li>1M ohm resistor</li>
<li>Some Thin Wire</li>
</ul>
<p>After that you&#8217;re off to the races as [William] documents how he goes about transforming the Game Boy Advance and includes a ton of great pictures and a schematic.  This operation ends with [William] placing the switch for Rapid Fire excellence next to the Right Bumper where it is inconspicuous and yet easy enough to access.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s only been a week since the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/09/18/super-game-boy-boot-rom-dumped/">Super Gameboy&#8217;s boot ROM</a> was dumped by [Costis] and he&#8217;s already at it again. This time he&#8217;s managed to grab the <a href="http://www.fpgb.org/?page_id=17">Gameboy Color&#8217;s boot ROM</a>. He found the newer Gameboy Color&#8217;s hardware is able to cope with a clock speed up to 100MHz, so the original clock increase trick he used on the Super Gameboy wouldn&#8217;t work again.</p>
<p>Instead he discovered a quick disconnection of clock and power before 0xFF50 would make the Gameboy jump to a random area within the ROM. Then it was only a matter of entropy, luck, and some special NOP instructions until eventually he had the boot ROM. Keep up the good work [Costis].</p>

<p>[Joey] sent us a link to the newest version of his <a href="http://filefreakout.com/animalstyle/?page_id=350">Gameboy foot controller</a>. In the video above, you can see how he uses it to control the loops in the background while he plays his guitar through an 8-bit filter. That is an old video, using the previous version. He tells us that several gameboys were used in the construction. At one point, he had to replace the guts because the music was so loud it knocked his equipment over and destroyed it. We can&#8217;t help but feel just a tiny bit of excitement as memories of renting a NES cartridge for the weekend fill our heads when we hear these riffs. His music isn&#8217;t too bad either. There is a growing crowd of people that support &#8220;chip music&#8221;. You can see what looks like a decent sized gathering enjoying a show with a little bit of a history lesson after the break.</p>

<p>[Jose Torres] sent in his latest attempt at creating a custom Gameboy game cartridge. We&#8217;ve <a href="http://hackaday.com/2007/10/28/usb-gameboy-cartridge-project/">featured</a> his <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/01/10/usb-transferer-aka-usb-gameboy-card-interface/">projects</a> before, and he&#8217;s come a lot closer over the last 2 years. He&#8217;s aiming to create an easy interface for homebrewers that doesn&#8217;t require any other special equipment. In this revision, he&#8217;s using a <a href="http://octopart.com/info/Microchip/PIC18LF4450-I%2FP">PIC</a> and a <a href="http://octopart.com/info/Xilinx/XC9572XL-10TQ100C">memory controller</a> to interface between an SD card and the Gameboy. The cart also has USB support for uploading files to the SD card and reprogramming the PIC. Because it&#8217;s just USB mass storage, it will work on almost any modern OS. He&#8217;s currently testing the device, but hopes to be selling them soon for $40.</p>

They tend to be a common weak point. Essentially, they just bought another , we&#8217;re assuming broken, Gameboy and swapped them out. Not a horribly complicated hack, but nice to know that it&#8217;s so easy. We have fond memories of the Gameboy, which came flooding back when he blew in the cartridge.  Happy Birthday Gameboy.</p>

<p>Here is a video of a <a href="http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=-n-iORmV3Qk">GameBoy Color being played on an LED matrix</a>. He has built it up to 140&#215;140 LEDs so far and it seems to be going well. He needs to add the final 20 LEDs to get the 160&#215;140 resolution of the GameBoy.  He notes in the comments that he had some problems with dead LEDs in the boards he got from eBay. Trying to remove the dead LED with a hot air rework station resulted in massive damage to the board. At one point he says that the power consumption is 1KW when showing all white. Wow, that&#8217;s a drain.</p>

<p>[Mark] had a broken TI-83 graphing calculator and an overwhelming urge to play Pokemon in math class. He gutted the calculator and connected the front buttons to the contacts on the GameBoy. After some cramming and taping bits together, he got it all working. Now he just needs to find a way to make the cartridge a little bit less conspicuous.</p>
