<p>[George] is a Neo Geo aficionado, and among his collection of paraphernalia, he has <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?194768-Custom-DIGITAL-marquee-for-MVS-mini-with-pics" target="_blank">a MVS-Mini game console.</a> His mini “Multi Video System” is a 2-slot model, meaning that it can hold two game cartridges at a time, which are indicated by plastic cards inserted in the cabinet’s face plate. Instead of swapping those cards out each time he changed cartridges, he thought it would be far cooler to install digital displays instead.</p>
<p>He scoured just about every retail store he could before finding a handful of small 5” digital picture frames that looked to fit the bill. After some careful cabinet modifications he had them wired up and ready for display. The frames don’t hold a ton of pictures, but they do support the use of SD cards. [George] says that he’ll likely just buy a ton of small SD cards, swapping them out whenever he changes games, though over time that might become as tedious as swapping out the plastic cards.</p>
<p>We would love to see [George] take his new digital display up a level, so be sure to share your ideas in the comments. Perhaps we can persuade him to automate things a bit.</p>

<p>A few years ago when [Dr. West] was wrapping up his collegiate studies, he put together <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhGE_hXbFbc" target="_blank">a pretty cool coilgun for his senior project.</a> The gun was built to simulate the Scorched Earth computer game in real life, but due to time constraints he was only able to build one turret instead of two.</p>
<p>The turret was constructed using mainly salvaged components, most of which came from old laser printers and desktop computers. The turret sits atop a computer PSU, which also happens to be the source of the coilgun’s charging power. A Rabbit 2000 microcontroller is used to drive the gun, which is something we’re familiar with from <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/09/29/sustainability-hacks-automatic-window-control/" target="_blank">[Dr. West’s] past projects.</a></p>
<p>The gun can be aimed manually via the attached keypad, but we prefer the more authentic route, allowing the turret to aim itself after being fed X and Y coordinates. As you can see in the demo video, the coilgun works nicely, allowing [Dr. West] to hit a target from across the room.</p>
<p>We love the concept, and think it would be tons of fun to play a real life game of Scorched Earth with a pair of these turrets. <p>[Tim Higgins] <a href="http://waterhobo.com/?p=53" target="_blank">picked up an old pachinko game</a> at a garage sale for his wife, but it ended up sitting unused in the garage for a few years. When he finally dusted it off, he decided that he wanted to restore and build a nice cabinet for it, though he thought the idea was a bit lame.</p>
<p>He says he likes to use some sort of CPU in his projects, and even though it was overkill, he made it his goal to add some sort of microprocessor to the game. He didn’t want to ruin the original aesthetics of the machine, so he decided that he could use an Arduino to drive a rewards system for skilled pachinko players.</p>
<p>Using some PVC pipe, he built a treat hopper which is controlled by the Arduino. When the player wins, the microcontroller triggers a small hobby servo, which dispenses gumballs/candy/etc.</p>

<p>If you happen to be in the market for some designer dice or need a set of custom dice for a game you have created, you could pay a ton of money to have them made, <a href="http://www.dicecreator.com/2010/05/20/open-source-dice-making/" target="_blank">or you can do it yourself</a>.</p>
<p>[Dicecreator] runs a blog dedicated to the ins and outs of creating DIY game and collector’s dice. This subject is not something that we would normally be interested in, but one particular item caught our interest &#8211; DIY toner transfer dice. Very similar to the process of creating a toner transfer PCB, he walks through the steps required for making your own dice with very little overhead.</p>
<p>The steps are likely quite familiar to those who have fabricated your own PCBs at home. He starts out with blank dice, sanding the sides down with increasingly fine sandpaper until they are ready for the transfer process. An image is printed on glossy inkjet photo paper, which is then applied to each die with a standard clothes iron. After a bit of soaking in water to remove the excess paper, the die is ready to go.</p>
<p>Sure it’s not exactly rocket science, but it is a cool little trick that would work quite well if you are trying to replace a lost die or if you simply want to make a fun gift for a friend.</p>

<p>[Rafael Mizrahi and Anat Sambol] decided that <a href="http://www.feng-gui.com/research/MindControlAngryBirds/" target="_blank">Angry Birds was missing one crucial element &#8211; mind control</a>. They grabbed a copy of the game for their netbook and [Rafael] strapped on an Emotiv EPOC headset to see if he could play it without using a mouse or keyboard. While he was able to move the cursor around with his thoughts, he found that Emotiv’s EmoKey software lacked any sort of mouse button support. Undaunted, they turned to the Internet for help and found that he could map the Emotiv’s output to his mouse via another application, <a href="http://glovepie.org/" target="_blank">GlovePie</a>.</p>
<p>As you can see in the video below their efforts were successful, though we doubt [Rafael] will be completely giving up his mouse just yet. With some more refinement, we imagine [Rafael] will be blasting pigs to kingdom come in no time.</p>
<p>If you are interested in trying this yourself, be aware that only the SDK version of the EPOC headset can be paired with 3rd party applications, the standard consumer version is locked into using solely authorized software.</p>

<p>Medical conditions that prevent individuals from being able to walk are difficult to handle, even more so if the patient happens to be a child. Shriner’s hospitals treat a good number of children suffering from cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or amputations. They are always looking for creative treatment methods, so their Motion Analysis Laboratory looked to some Rice University undergrads for help. They asked the group of engineers to design a system that would make physical therapy a bit more fun, while helping encourage the children along.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.media.rice.edu/media/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&amp;ID=15630&amp;SnID=323474611" target="_blank">The team recently unveiled their project, called the Equiliberator.</a> The game system incorporates a series of five Wii balance boards situated between a pair of pressure-sensitive handrails. The platform communicates with a computer via Bluetooth, registering the patient’s movements as he or she moves along the path. The software portion of the system consists of a monster-slaying game which requires the child to step on a particular section of the pathway to dispose of the oncoming enemies.</p>
<p>The game is designed to get more difficult as the child’s balance and coordination improve, encouraging them with an ever growing bank of points as they progress. The final goal of the project is to enable the pressure sensitive handrails to determine how much the child is relying on them for balance, offering in-game incentives to walk with as little support as possible.</p>
<p>We love seeing hacks like this which not only entertain, but truly help people in the process. Kudos to the team at Rice University &#8211; they have done a fantastic job here.</p>

<p>Sometimes emulators just don&#8217;t cut it when you want to play a vintage game. Like it or not, some people enjoy the nostalgia of playing old games on the actual hardware for which it was designed.</p>
<p>[Callan] wrote in to share a method he has been using to <a href="http://callanbrown.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=59:basic-nes-reproduction-moai-kun&amp;catid=36:home-console-projects&amp;Itemid=61" target="_blank">make some of his own NES game cartridges from ROM dumps</a> in order to play them on an honest to goodness NES console.</p>
<p>He starts out with a 190 in 1 game cartridge, where he found a neat Famicom game never released in the US. He decided he would patch the ROM he found on the multicart in order to have an English menu, and then create his very own cartridge from the image. He discusses how to identify which EPROM chips you will need in order to construct your cartridge, as well as some helpful ways of finding a donor cart that has a similar enough board to house your components.</p>
<p>[Callan] also provides a quick walkthrough of erasing and burning your new EPROM chips, before discussing some post-soldering troubleshooting steps you might need to take before your game will work properly.</p>
<p>While we can&#8217;t comment on the legality of these game clones, we still think it&#8217;s pretty awesome.</p>

<p>[NeoTechni] wrote in to share the <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/neotechni/Home/pc#TOC-NES-Paul" target="_blank">new game peripheral she built</a>, dubbed the NES Paul. The ultimate goal of the project was to build a NES-styled controller for an upcoming game she is working on, tentatively titled 8-bit Hero. The guitar is constructed primarily from wood, as well as some scrounged bits she had around the house. An Xbox 360 controller was dismantled and wired to provide input for the guitar’s buttons and D-Pad. Even the Xbox controller’s rumble packs were used in order to provide visual feedback of missed notes via LED tuning pegs on the guitar’s headstock.</p>
<p>The writeup is broken into several pieces as it was put together in a handful of Google Buzz posts, but it is still relatively easy to follow. We can’t wait to see how the project comes together once the game portion has been completed.</p>

<p>For everyone using  a later version of Windows like Vista or Windows 7 they will probably never get to enjoy the awesomeness that was Wing Commander&#8230;<a href="http://bit.ly/DDHack">until now</a>. [Jari Komppa] has managed to use DirectDraw to his advantage and hack out a solution to this disappointing problem.  He used DirectX to do this and has even managed to get OpenGL to load from a DLL after a few problems with Windows XP and Windows 7.  This is truly a step forward in retro gaming.  No more should we have to load a virtual machine to play Starcraft.  Hopefully getting this ported to even older games such as Sim Farm or Commander Keen are on the way!</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Here is one that really got some of us at the HAD offices excited (yes, we own Zunes). The introduction of the <a href="http://zunedevwiki.org/wiki/start">Open Zune Development Kit</a>. Sure, there was <a href="http://creators.xna.com/en-US/">XNA</a>, and we even toyed around with it. But anyone will quickly realize just how limited XNA is, especially with older hardware.</p>
<p>OpenZDK is in its infancy, with only <a href="http://zunedevwiki.org/wiki/development/samples">one application</a> thus far (don&#8217;t worry, you can still use XNA apps too). But we wanted to give it a shout out and let the hacker community make this potential into a reality.</p>

<p>[Dave] hosted a one day seminar at the Illinois Institute of Technology which focused on <a href="http://labs.ideo.com/2010/01/04/game-on-workshop-at-iit/#more-536">rapid electronics prototyping for those with little prior experience</a> blinking those LEDs. As the defacto standard for novice prototypers it&#8217;s no surprise that he gave an Arduino to each team to use as the controller-computer interface. He started the day by getting the <a href="http://www.firmata.org/wiki/Main_Page">Firmata package</a> up and running. Firmata is a set of libraries that make communications between software and a microcontrollers simple. In this case, each team developed a Flash game that used data from the Arduino as a control.</p>
<p>Several rudimentary games resulted from the day. We&#8217;ve embedded video of two of them after the break for your enjoyment. Lion Vs. Pig uses potentiometers, a distance sensor, and an arcade button to play a game of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_and_mouse">cat-and-mouse</a> (well, Lion-and-Pig really). The other is Kick the Cat, a game that uses a flex sensor and force sensor combination as input. This is something of a virtual mini-basketball game that uses a springy material to launch a virtual feline at a target.</p>
<p>These teams already had a background in code, but the hardware was a new endeavor for them. Arduino helps to break down this cross-over barrier and we think this will result in more people to contribute to open source projects, and falling hardware prices due to a larger volume of demand.</p>

<p>Recently, a friend of ours got married who is a Ms. Pac-Man fanatic. His best man set out to fulfill the groom&#8217;s dream of owning a Ms. Pac-Man <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocktail_cabinet#Cocktail_or_table_cabinets">cocktail cabinet</a>. The problem is that the unit he was after was selling for $2500. It&#8217;s great to buy the real thing (and with guest contributions he did,) but if it&#8217;s not available consider building your own.</p>
<p>[Alex] has put together a comprehensive <a href="http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/how_build_kickass_mame_arcade_rig_old_pc_pics">guide for building a MAME cocktail cabinet</a>. Unlike the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/09/04/mini-mame-cabinet/">mini-cabinet we saw last week</a>, this is intended to be used sitting down and features controls on more than one side. His guide details the use of an original arcade CRT or an LCD flat panel, high-end controls via an <a href="http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html">I-Pac 4 controller</a>, and a PC running <a href="http://mamedev.org/">MAME</a> and <a href="http://malafe.net/">MaLa</a> software for Windows. The result is a professional looking build with controls on three sides of the table.</p>

<p>For those that are lucky enough to remember it, Lunar Lander was a fantastic game. Though it had simple vector graphics and highly repetitive game play, it kept us captivated. We probably lost entire weeks of our lives competing with friends to be the best. Well, now we can relive that experience with a <a href="http://www.lushprojects.com/lunarlander/">physical version of the game</a>. [Lain] built this fantastic arcade style game to replicate Lunar Lander&#8217;s game play exactly. The style of the project is fantastic with giant analog meters and dials giving real time feedback.  You even get a prize if you complete all 3 levels. You can get plenty of build details by going through <a href="http://lushprojects.com/blog/?cat=6">his blog</a>. Maybe he should hook up with the folks that built the <a href="http://www.galaxiki.org/web/main/_blog/all/build-your-own-nasa-apollo-landing-computer-no-kidding.shtml">Apollo landing computer replica</a> to build the ultimate simulator.</p>

<p>[<a href="http://separaterealities.com/">Perry's</a>] awesome <a href="http://separaterealities.com/projects/acceled_pong/">AcceLED Pong</a> project gives new life to a classic game by adding acceleration-based control. The pong paddles are moved by tilting the circuit left or right. Motion is measured by an <a href="http://www.analog.com/en/mems-and-sensors/imems-accelerometers/adxl203/products/product.html">ADXL203</a> dual axis accelerometer, and an <a href="http://www.atmel.com/dyn/Products/Product_card.asp?part_id=2014">ATMEGA32</a> microcontroller converts acceleration into ball and paddle movement. The game display is a three-color <a href="http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=759">SparkFun 8&#215;8 LED matrix</a> with serial interface.</p>
<p>[Perry] also used a similar setup to make a USB <a href="http://separaterealities.com/projects/spectrum_analyzer/">LED spectrum analyzer</a> fed by the Linux <a href="http://www.xmms.org/">XMMS media player</a>.</p>

<p><a href="http://m8ta.com/index.pl">m8ta fun</a> did an extensive <a href="http://m8ta.com/index.pl?pid=600">teardown of OCZ&#8217;s Neural Impulse Actuator (NIA)</a>. OCZ&#8217;s computer/mind interface is actually a fairly straight forward design. An analog front-end cleans and amplifies the &#8216;neural&#8217; signal with a few <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operational_amplifier">op-amps</a> before feeding it to a 24 bit <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog-to-digital_converter">analog to digital converter</a> (ADC). A USB enabled PIC microcontroller reads the 24bit parallel ADC output through a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7400_series">common 7400 series</a> parallel to serial adapter IC. The device has an <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Understanding-ICSP-for-PIC-Microcontrollers/">ICSP programing header</a> (top right), though it&#8217;s not yet clear if the PIC can be read or written.</p>
