<p>This <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKd49mAtgp4">pair of backpack-mounted wings</a> was conceived after seeing the Angel/Archangel character in the movie X-Men: The Last Stand. They measure 14&#8217;6&#8243; inches across, but they fold up so that the wearer can actually get around in them. The mechanism is built from MDF, using several layers of gears cut from the material as well as pieces that act as the skeleton for the appendages. This makes them look and work well, but adds a lot of weight as the project comes in at about 25 pounds.</p>
<p><a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/11/08/personal-flight-from-the-steam-age/">The steampunk wings</a> we saw a few days back were partly inspired by this set. But this pair is more true to the Steampunk concept, relying on pneumatics instead of electricity for motion. A pair of pneumatic rams originally made to cushion the closing of screen doors let the wearer automatically extend the unit. As you can see in the video after the break, this happens quickly and gracefully. They do have to be folded back up by hand, and we&#8217;d bet you need a second person to assist with this, but we could be wrong.</p>

<p>[Frank] sent in a link to this fantastic wooden clock. The design was dreamed up by [Clayton Boyer] and <a href="http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/birdofparadisepage1.htm">he&#8217;s got full-sized templates for sale on his site</a>. We&#8217;ve marveled at his creations in the past, having featured <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/06/16/most-useless-machine-loses-carbon-footprint/">his useless machine</a> that was made from wooden gears. This &#8220;Bird of Paradise&#8221; clock steps up the complexity quite a bit, creating a timepiece without a case to show off the beauty of all of those teeth.</p>
<p>We wondered what goes into building one of these yourself. From the <a href="http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/frequentquestions.htm">FAQ page</a> it seems you could get by with a scroll saw, drill press, Dremel, and sander. That&#8217;s the medium-tech method, but you could opt to scan the plans in order to laser cut your parts, or <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/06/24/building-a-robot-without-using-a-machine-shop/">just use hand tools</a>. But in addition to building tips, there&#8217;s advice on how to fine tune clocks that don&#8217;t want to keep running, thoughts on finishing the wood parts, sanding, tweaking the teeth, and much more. It&#8217;s no secret we have a love for digital clock projects, but there&#8217;s something very seductive about a design like this that uses no electricity. <p>[Stephen Hobley] has been experimenting with an electromagnetic pendulum in order to <a href="http://www.stephenhobley.com/blog/2011/06/05/the-arduino-controlled-electromagnetic-pendulum-clock/" target="_blank">build himself a clock</a>. Through the course of his experiments, he has learned quite a bit about how pendulums function as well as the best way to keep one moving without the need for chains and weights, which are typically associated with these sorts of clocks.</p>
<p>His first experiments involved <a href="http://www.stephenhobley.com/blog/2011/05/31/electromagnetic-pendulum-making-it-tell-the-time/" target="_blank">driving a simple pendulum with a pulse motor</a>. He discovered that the easiest way to keep the pendulum moving was to use a coil to detect when the it reached the equilibrium point, pushing it along by sending a small pulse to that same coil. He noticed that he could keep the pendulum moving at a pretty good tick if he triggered the magnetic coil every third pass, so he implemented an Arduino to keep count of passes and apply the appropriate force when needed.</p>
<p>He has been making pretty decent headway since his first experiments and now has nearly all of the clock works assembled. Crafted out of wood, he uses a 15-tooth primary drive ratchet, which powers two 60-tooth gears responsible for keeping track of seconds, as well as a pair of larger gears that track the minutes and hours.</p>
<p>It’s looking good so far, we can’t wait to see it when finished.</p>

<p>Okay, so <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGZIztjoHb8">this link is a Lexus commercial</a>. But it&#8217;s worth watching to see the footage of this driving simulator. Inside that pod is an actual automobile surrounded by a 360 degree screen. The room has a full x and y axis to move the pod (and the car) as you drive through the simulated world. It&#8217;s like someone gave a bunch of geeks an unlimited budget and say &#8220;go nuts&#8221;. [Thanks Luke]</p>

<p>Everyone whose spent some time in web design has run across the peculiar rendering bugs and workarounds associated with Internet Explorer. <a href="http://www.iestolemylife.com/">Internet Explorer Stole My Life</a> aims to tabulate the collective time wasted from the lives of developers. We think it&#8217;s hilarious because spending the same amount of time meeting <a href="http://www.w3.org/standards/webdesign/">W3C standards</a> and this problem would go away. But [Caleb] mentioned something interesting when he saw this site: What part of your hacking adventures wastes the most time? We&#8217;d love to hear about it in the comments.</p>

<p>[Clayton Boyer] took the electricity out of the useless machine, <a href="http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/mysterybox.htm">making one that runs like a clock</a>. To this point, we&#8217;ve always seen these <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/12/30/simplest-most-useless-machine/">useless machine use electric motors</a>. [Clayton's] clever design uses a wind-up spring and a series of wooden gears to bring the fun, making it a great companion for the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/13/binary-adder-will-give-you-slivers/">binary adder</a> you built. The video above shows the inner workings and the design plans are for sale. We&#8217;d love to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/06/05/3d-printed-makerbot/">print out the parts</a> or perhaps just laser-cut them from wood <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/01/21/spiderbot-prompts-laser-envy/">like the legs of this spider bot</a>.</p>

A simple panning motion can add impact to the already-dramatic effect of <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/07/09/intervalometers-and-timelapse-photography/">time lapse photography</a>. To accomplish this, frugal cinematographers sometimes build [Rube Goldberg] contraptions from clock motors, VCR parts or telescope tracking mounts. Hack a Day reader [Stephan Martin] has <a href="http://www.designer2k2.at/index.php?option=com_content&amp;amp;view=article&amp;amp;id=29:timelapse&amp;amp;catid=13:arduino&amp;amp;Itemid=40">assembled a clever bargain-basement system</a> using an Arduino-driven stepper motor and a reduction gear system built up from LEGO Technic parts, along with some Processing code on a host PC to direct the show.</p>
<p>While the photography is a bit crude (using just a webcam), [Stephan’s] underlying motion control setup might interest budding filmmakers with [Ron Fricke] aspirations but Top Ramen budgets. What’s more, unlike rigid clock motor approaches, software control of the camera mount has the potential for some interesting non-linear, fluid movements.</p>
