<p>It&#8217;s not that touchscreen keyboards are <em>horrible</em>, but it&#8217;s nearly impossible to touch type on an iPad or other tablet keyboard. A team at the Media Computing Group at Aachen University figured out how to put a series of electromagnets underneath a display to <a href="http://hci.rwth-aachen.de/fingerflux">provide haptic feedback</a> for touchscreens. They showed off their tech at the <a href="http://www.acm.org/uist/uist2011/">2011 UIST conference</a> and made their paper <a href="http://hci.rwth-aachen.de/materials/publications/weiss2011b.pdf">available</a>.</p>
<p>For the FingerFlux, as the team likes to call it, a bed of tiny electromagnets is placed underneath a panel display. The user wears a &#8216;thimble&#8217; with an attached permanent magnet. Driving the bed of electromagnets slightly moves the magnet and provides a little bit of sensation to the user.</p>
<p>The FingerFlux can be used to provide haptic feedback like a keyboard. The system can also be used to model constraints &#8211; making sure that users don&#8217;t move outside the controls they operate, and can guide the user to the desired button.</p>
<p>A bed of electromagnets would be a welcome addition to tablets, if only to prevent typung luje rhus. Check out the demo of the FingerFlux after the break.</p>

<p>So we know you’ve got a lot of porn on your computer, but just how much is a lot? <a href="http://romangrasy.tumblr.com/post/6326810772/databot" target="_blank">This concept mouse and hard drive combo</a> aims to show you just how much digital junk you have acquired through physical feedback.</p>
<p>The DataBot mouse looks like a typical run of the mill scroll mouse that you might get with a new computer. Inside however, the designers have added a small servo which alters the ease with which the ball moves. The more files you have stuffed into the folder you are moving around, the more the mouse resists, giving you a sense of the physical “weight” of your computer’s contents.</p>
<p>The DataBot hard drive gives you a sense of how full your computer is by growing and shrinking based on space usage. During file transmissions the hard drive blinks its LEDs to indicate how fast or slowly your files are moving. When the inevitable file access error occurs, the LEDs switch to a bright red hue and the drive shakes to indicate there is a problem afoot.</p>
<p>With the price of data storage decreasing by the day, it’s easy to get lost in a glut of information without realizing just how much data you have. This is definitely an interesting way to get a different look at your data consumption.</p>

<p>The world can be a pretty difficult place to navigate when you lack the ability to see it. There are many visually impaired people across the globe, with some figures claiming up to 40 million individuals affected. While walking canes and seeing-eye dogs can be a huge help, [Anirudh] of Multimodal Interactions Group, HP Labs India, and some students at the College of Engineering in Pune, India (COEP) have been hard at work constructing <a href="http://anirudh.me/2011/06/le-chal-a-haptic-feedback-based-shoe-for-the-blind/" target="_blank">a haptic navigation system for the blind</a>.</p>
<p>[Anirudh Sharma and Dushyant Mehta] debuted their haptic feedback shoe design during an MIT Media Lab Workshop hosted at COEP. In its current form, Google Maps and GPS data is sourced from an Android device, which is fed to an Arduino via Bluetooth. The Arduino then activates one of four LEDs mounted on a shoe insert that are used to indicate which direction the individual should travel in order to safely reach their destination. While the current iteration uses LEDs, they will be swapped out for small vibrating motors in the final build.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re always fans of assistive technology hacks, and we think this one is great. The concept works well, <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/03/20/gps-enabled-bag-allows-for-carefree-city-roaming/" target="_blank">as we have seen before</a>, so it&#8217;s just a matter of getting this project refined and in the <del>hands</del> shoes of those who need it.</p>

<p>Can we do away with a keypad and just squeeze our phones to check messages and dial contacts? [Sidhant Gupta] has been <a href="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/sidhant/squeezeblock.html">researching the idea of an electronically adjustable spring mechanism</a> that might just make this possible. He calls the prototype above the SqueezeBlock. If you pick it up and give it a squeeze you can feel springs pushing back against your fingers, but it&#8217;s all a trick. Inside you&#8217;ll find one motor with a gear that converts the linear motion into a rotating force. Attached to the same axle as that gear are a motor and a rotary encoder. A microcontroller monitors that encoder to detect a user squeezing the two plates together, then drives the motor to vary the resistance. [Sidhant] outlines some possible uses that included stiffer resistence as unread email starts to pile up, or squeezing the device to its smallest size to turn the ringer volume all the way down.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re a little skeptical of this functionality in handhelds just because of the power consumption issue. But if that is somehow overcome we think this would make a pretty interesting phone feature&#8230; at least at first. <p>[Ben Krasnow] is working on <a href="http://benkrasnow.blogspot.com/2011/02/how-to-build-air-muscle-and-use-it-in.html">a force-feedback joystick</a>. It centers around the concept of an air muscle which transfers pressure into linear motion. He cites <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-air-muscles!/">another air muscle project</a> as part of the inspiration in his build, but where he&#8217;s gone with it is one of the better uses for these blow-up components that we&#8217;ve seen.</p>
<p>Basically you have a bladder, in this case rubber tubing. A mesh surrounds it to reinforce the material and cause inflation to shorten the length of the package. In the image above there are four black air muscles that connect the base of a joystick with the outer frame that houses it. How and when each muscle is pressurized determines the type of motion the user will feel on the joystick. This is where his pressure controller comes into play. It uses a voltage-to-pressure transducer to feed a manifold, the combination of which not only makes each muscle addressable but allows him to dial in the force sent to the muscles. The hat measures a sensor at the wearer&#8217;s cheek to determine if the wearer is smiling. When the hat does detects the wearer is not smiling, it activates a servo that prods the wearer. This project is fairly unique in that it provides haptic bio-feedback of what the body is doing, a similar project to the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/08/17/the-happillow-project/">Happillow</a>. While the Happiness Hat seems to work for treating the outward symptoms of unhappiness, this is but an early step towards the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droud">droud</a>.</p>

<p>We can not express the childlike glee that we experienced watching this video. We want so badly to have <a href="http://www.furo.org/en/works/hull.html">one of these setups</a>. What you are seeing is a half dome projected cockpit with two haptic controllers in the style of a delta robot. This is controlling the Halluc robot which is a hybrid wheeled octopod. The dome can and has been <a href="http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/miscellaneous/domemirror/">done at home fairly simply</a>, and we suspect that you guys could come up with some similar delta controllers. So who wants to build one and donate it to hackaday?</p>

<p>[Sam] submitted this fun project, a <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Punchout-Interactive-Interface-Improved/">Punchout interface that you actually punch</a>. If you recall, we&#8217;ve done a <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/02/03/punchy-punchout-controller/">Punchout interface that you punch</a>, but this one takes it a step further. Instead of being a blob on a desk that you&#8217;re mashing around, the new one is a Slam Man boxing dummy. They&#8217;ve mounted the buttons on different areas of the dummy so you can punch him to completely control the game. As you can see in the video, it seems to work ok, though we doubt the buttons will hold up very long under those conditions. They do say that this is just to hold them over till the Wii version, so maybe those buttons will last just long enough.</p>

We knew that it would be a device that could raise sections<br /> of its touchscreen to simulate the feel of buttons or keys, we just weren&#8217;t sure how Nokia would pull that off. <br />Now we have a better idea, as <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/2008/07/08/nokia-haptikos-tactile-touchscreen-details-emerge/">Nokia&#8217;s recent patent filing for the Haptikos</a> gives away some juicy details.</p>
<p>The secret behind the device&#8217;s feedback is a &#8220;plurality of closely spaced voltage controllable protuberances,&#8221; or in other words, several small fluid filled compartments just under the screen&#8217;s surface. Under them are several piezoelectric members that can be controlled independently; when they extend upward, they apply pressure to the fluid compartments, raising the surface of the screen in that area. </p>
<p>Nokia has yet to work out all the kinks, but you can see the parts that do work by downloading the <a href="http://www.unwiredview.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/nokia-haptics.pdf">Haptikos patent application</a> (PDF file). </p>

The research team from Korea&#8217;s Sungkyunkwan University that developed the device are focusing on applications like Braille for the visually impaired or transmitting tactile data to a remote user, but this is just the beginning; the applications for wearable haptic feedback are wide open.</p>

It is little more than <a href="http://feelspace.cogsci.uos.de/en/technology_01.html">an electronic compass hooked to array of vibrators arranged along a belt</a>, but it allows the wearer to know which way is north at all times by pulsing only the northernmost vibrator. It&#8217;s intended to be worn at all times, so it creates a sort of directional sixth sense for the user without the need to constantly check a device. If they are able to reduce the size of the housing unit and combine it with these new displays, it could be worn inconspicuously under clothes. </p>

By <a href="http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20040226.html">implanting a silicone-coated neodymium magnet into the fingertip</a>, the owner of the implant becomes capable of sensing magnetism with a degree of sensitivity unattainable by simply holding a magnet. One person who had the magnet implanted reported feeling magnetic sensors at a library and feeling the location of a motor in an electric can opener six inches from his hand. </p>
<p>We&#8217;re always curious about <a href="http://www.hackaday.com/2008/06/05/bionic-senses/">input fed to the body by worn or implanted devices</a>, and with these advances, the notion of data and sensory integration is almost a palpable reality. Pun intended, but can you blame us?</p>

The 1932 book of the same name was probably the first introduction many people got to the idea of computer generated touch sensations. In the book, movies are replaced with what are called &#8220;feelies&#8221;; patrons sit in chairs that provide feedback throughout the screening. </p>
<p>While we don&#8217;t see this coming to your local megaplex any time soon, we are starting to see the technology creep into our lives. After the break lets take a look at some examples, talk about projects we&#8217;ve covered before, and how you can get started developing your own.</p>

With force capabilities of 2lbs and a resolution of 400dpi the unit can interact with several software programs and <a href="http://novint-falcon.blogspot.com/2008/01/did-we-mention-quake-4.html">video games</a>. The unit sells for around $239 and includes several compatible games.</p>

His latest creation the <a href="http://technology.newscientist.com/article/dn13959-strokable-robot-rabbit-talks-with-touch.html">Haptic Creature</a> is a small bunny that responds to touch through pressure sensors and then responds. Different forms of touch result in the creature changing it&#8217;s breathing, purring, and of course wiggling its little bunny ears.</p>
<p> On the fun side of things, we have several toys making their way into the market with haptic feedback features built in. The <a href="http://www.mahalo.com/Pleo">Pleo</a> being one for of the more advanced examples with it&#8217;s almost unlimited amount of responses and feedback. The toy itself is touted as something to interact with as opposed to simply control. <a href="http://www.ugobe.com/">UGOBE</a> is also talking up its therapeutic value for both children and adults.</p>
<p>While some of this technology may seem out of reach of DIY, there is one organization trying to bring open source to the scene. Backed by <a href="http://www.sensegraphics.com/">SenseGraphic</a> the <a href="http://www.h3dapi.org/">H3D API</a> is an open source initiative to help programmers interface with various haptic devices. Browse their <a href="http://www.sensegraphics.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=24&amp;Itemid=36">hall of fame</a> page to see what individuals and universities have done with the API. This PDF also provides a <a href="http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~stephen/workshops/haptic/papers/stone.pdf">broad overview of the history of haptics</a>.</p>
