<p>The magnum opus of alchemy was the Philosopher&#8217;s stone, a substance that was able to turn common metals into gold. Unlike alchemists, [Carl Willis] might not be poisoning himself in a multitude of ways, but he did build a <a href="http://carlwillis.wordpress.com/2008/02/17/farnsworth-fusor-carls-jr/">Farnsworth fusor</a> that&#8217;s capable of turning Hydrogen into Helium.</p>
<p>To fuse Hydrogen in his device, [Carl] first evacuates a vacuum chamber. Deuterium (Hydrogen with an added neutron) is injected into the chamber, and a <a href="http://carlwillis.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/lower.jpg">spherical cathode</a> made of Tungsten is charged to 75 kV. The deuterium gas is heated and confined by the cathode and fuses into Helum. The electrostatic confinement of the plasma isn&#8217;t very much different from some old CRT tubes. This isn&#8217;t a coincidence &#8211; both the fusor and CRTs were invented by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philo_Farnsworth">the same man</a>.</p>
<p>While no fusion experiments &#8211; including some <a href="https://lasers.llnl.gov/">billion dollar experiments</a> &#8211; have ever produced a net energy gain, this doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s not an impressive engineering feat. If you&#8217;d like to try your hand at building your own fusor, drop by the surprisingly active <a href="http://www.fusor.net/board/index.php?site=fusor">research forum</a>. There&#8217;s a lot of <a href="http://www.fusor.net/board/view.php?bn=fusor_images&amp;key=1304857808">really good projects</a> to look through over there.</p>

<p>Check out this floating foam letter machine that was shown off at last year&#8217;s IFA show in Berlin, the German equivalent of CES. <a href="http://www.flogos.net/" target="_blank">The contraption is called Flogos</a>, and comes from a company named SnowMasters based out of Alabama.</p>
<p>The Flogos machine consists of a helium and compressed air bubble generator positioned below a custom stencil cutout. As the bubbles form, they are forced into a relatively tight formation as they exit the stencil. Once a nice thick layer is established, a small plastic arm is dragged across the surface, liberating the foam from the stencil allowing it to float through the sky as you can see in the video below.</p>
<p>We think it’s pretty cool, and we wouldn’t mind having one around just for kicks. If you were to lay some stencils over a tweaked version of <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/04/22/build-a-foam-machine/" target="_blank">this foam generator we featured last year</a>, you could probably have your own floating foam printer up and running in no time.</p>

<p>[Segelfam] <a href="http://www.coultersmithing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&amp;t=172">built his own scanning electron microscope</a>. He based the machine around an old <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_camera_tube#Vidicon">Vidicon tube</a>, a video recording technology that was used in NASA&#8217;s unmanned space probes prior the Galileo probe in the late 1970&#8242;s. We struggle a bit with the <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http://www.rapp-instruments.de/NewsPage/Vidikon/vidikon.htm">machine translation</a> of [Segelfam's] <a href="http://www.rapp-instruments.de/NewsPage/Vidikon/vidikon.htm">original build log</a>, but it seems that he filled the tube with helium in order to convert it for use as a microscope. But don&#8217;t worry, if you&#8217;re interested in this hack the information is all there &#8211; between the forum thread and build log &#8211; it&#8217;s just a matter of putting it all together to fill in the details.</p>
<p>In case you were wondering, the image to the upper right has been colored using Photoshop; the rest are straight from the SEM.</p>
