<p>This lens adapter makes a lot of sense if you&#8217;re looking to interface with cameras that don&#8217;t have an in-built mounting option. It <a href="http://binaryhead.blogspot.com/2012/01/lente-macro-del-hombre-pobre.html">uses the cap and threaded neck from a soda bottle</a> (<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fbinaryhead.blogspot.com%2F2012%2F01%2Flente-macro-del-hombre-pobre.html">translated</a>) to make the lens adjustable and removable.</p>
<p>In the past we&#8217;ve seen this hack using <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/05/06/building-removable-epoxy-mounting-brackets/">a lens cap with a hole drilled in it</a> as the mounting bracket. But that&#8217;s only useful if the lens you&#8217;ve chosen actually has a cap to use. This method lets you cut the top off of a the soda cap and mount it on the camera. Now each lens can be affixed to the threaded neck of the bottle, allowing for some adjustment of the focal point by screwing the add-on in or out.</p>
<p>Obviously this would work well for macro or fish-eye lenses. But there&#8217;s all kinds of other options out there like adding <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/08/20/microscope-camera-adapter/">a microscope lens adapter</a>, or actually attaching quality optics to your device.</p>

<p>While digging through a pile of old camera equipment, [Jake] stumbled upon a camera that belonged to his grandfather and was curious to see what sorts of images the old lens would produce. He wasn&#8217;t interested in messing around with a film-based camera for his experiments, so he needed to <a href="http://steampunkworkshop.com/putting-old-lenses-canon-dslr" target="_blank">find a way to mount the vintage lens</a> on his newer Canon DSLR.</p>
<p>After considering several options including custom machined adapters and mounting rings built from old Canon lenses, he found a much cheaper solution. He purchased a lens adapter made to mount a particular type of lens to a modern DSLR, and then modified it to fit his lens. It worked perfectly, though he admits the resulting images are not that different than those taken with his regular lens.</p>
<p>Underwhelmed with the images, he decided to mount the lens on a set of bellows he picked up at the local dump. It looks pretty neat, but he has yet to get a chance to take any pictures with his new setup. Hopefully we&#8217;ll see some test shots soon.</p>
<p>If anyone has experience with using bellows lenses on a modern DSLR, we&#8217;re always up for seeing some sample pictures. <p>[Dusjagr] has <a href="http://hackteria.org/?p=630">another take on building a laser projection microscope</a>. Last year we saw <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/08/21/laser-microscope-projection/">a laser-based microscope</a> that shined the beam of light through a water droplet which contained the subject to be magnified. The droplet bent the focused beam of light and projected the magnified contents onto a screen. Now that&#8217;s pretty neat and [Dusjagr] has used that method himself. But most traditional microscopes use glass slides to contain the subject and this new version now makes that possible.</p>
<p>A bit of experimentation led [Dusjagr] to the discovery that a lens re-purposed from a webcam can achieve similar focus results as a water droplet. The video after the break shows the apparatus seen above in action. The laser shines through the lens, then through a slide that contains a water sample from a nearby pond. The image is clear, albeit completely bathed in green.</p>
<p>For us the most interesting part of [Dusjagr's] writeup is his discussion of the limits of laser amplification based on the wavelength of light the diode puts out.</p>

<p>Wielding the power to melt glass or instantly ignite most day to day materials can be <del>intoxicating</del> pretty fun. With a little math, a lot of patience, and 5,800  1cm pieces of mirror, <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5747513/teen-glued-5800-mirrors-onto-satellite-dish-for-solar-death+ray">this build</a> requires welding glasses just to look at the 1-2cm focal point. With an idea rumored to date back to <a href="http://web.mit.edu/2.009/www/experiments/deathray/10_ArchimedesResult.html">Archimedes</a>, this more portable parabolic project is perfect for your home burning needs. Unfortunately, this setup seems to have burnt itself to death at some point, though that makes room for version two, which will reportedly bump the mirror count to 32,000 or so.</p>
<p>There are plenty of other ways to make a death ray out there as well, including using <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/01/15/phaser-to-laser-mod-puts-out-465mw/">lasers</a> or <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Giant-Fresnel-Lens-Deathray-An-Experiment-in-Opti/">lenses</a>. <p>[Tony Lovell] and [dkpeterborough] <a href="http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/66544-home-made-900mm-lens.html">built a sizable camera lens</a> using optics from a flight simulator projector. What they ended up with is a 900mm lens that can make a beautiful photo of the moon, or capture distant landscapes in great detail. The body of the lens was designed in CAD and sent off for fabrication out of aluminum, as seen above. The concentric baffles help to prevent lens flare but it can&#8217;t be used in its bare-aluminum condition. The internals were coated using a stippling finish that leaves a sandy texture. That was covered with matte black barbecue paint, doing a great job of preventing optical interference, and the outside received a glossy white coat. Finished weight: 59 pounds, but once you see the pictures you&#8217;ll agree it&#8217;s worth lugging the bulky instrument around to grab that killer shot.</p>

<p>[Drake Anthony] makes <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zihZiGUKUS8">building a cutting laser from a PC</a> look easy, and it seems like it actually is. Almost everything you need can be found in a dead desktop unit. The diode is pulled from a DVD writer (16x or faster), with the power supply unit, and heat sinks from the processor and GPU being used as well. You&#8217;ll also need a focusing lens (just a few dollars), some thermal glue, an LM317, a resistor, and a pair of protective goggles matching the laser diode&#8217;s wavelength.</p>
<p>He fits the diode into the lens, then glues the assembly into a hole drilled through the processor heat sink. A driver is built using the LM317 variable regulator, resistor, power supply, and the GPU heat sink to keep things cool. <p>Having experienced quite a bit of trouble getting the Nintendo Wii remotes to work reliably with his home theater projector, [Sprite_TM] <a href="http://spritesmods.com/?art=virtwiibar">designed his own sensor bar replacement</a>. If you&#8217;re not familiar, the Wii remotes have an infrared camera in the tip that sense two IR LEDs in the sensor bar that resides above or below your television. The problem is that if you&#8217;re too far away, the points of light are not where the remote expects them to be and the cursor will not perform as expected. Since this is a huge projected display it&#8217;s no surprise that the player is further away from the screen than the system was designed for.</p>
<p>[Sprite_TM's] solution was to build a projection system for the two IR points. The unit in the picture above is a driver circuit with two IR emitters mounted on a heat sink, each with its own reflector. The reflected beams are shined through a Fresnel lens and projected on the same wall as the TV image. The viewer will not be able to see this light as it&#8217;s in a longer wavelength than the visible spectrum. But the Wii remote performs beautifully now and the replacement sensor bar is happily mounted out of sight above the projector.</p>

As you&#8217;d expect, adding the lens helps the phone&#8217;s camera bring tiny details into focus. He re-purposed a lens from a pair of mini binoculars, using epoxy putty to make a mounting bracket. Now the last time we saw this putty used with a phone it was for <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/05/06/building-removable-epoxy-mounting-brackets/">a snap-in bracket that cradled the phone</a> and included a lens adapter. Rather than go that route [Thomas] made use of the headphone jack just above the camera lens. An old headphone plug has been epoxied to the macro lens ring, holding it in place securely while remaining easily removable.</div>

<p>[Devon Croy] <a href="http://dcroy.blogspot.com/2010/08/webcam-details.html">built a case to join a webcam sensor with a camera lens</a>. The box is a PVC conduit box you&#8217;d find at a home center. He used JB Weld to attach four bolts to the back of the box. These are used to fine-tune the mounting plate for the webcam sensor to ensure it&#8217;s at the focal point of the lens. The lens connects through a couple of extension tubes to an adapter mounted in the center of the box&#8217;s cover plate. The setup above shows a macro lens that <a href="http://dcroy.blogspot.com/2010/08/modified-webcam.html">takes pretty good pictures</a>.</p>

He covers the technical side of how tilt-shift works, showing the differences in several methods. There is a breakdown of different cameras and ease of modification as well as links to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/07/28/making-a-tilt-shift-lens/">several</a> of his past <a href="http://hackaday.com/2006/12/30/diy-canon-lenses/">projects</a>. He even shows comparisons between instant tilt-shift Photoshop methods and the real thing, pointing out key things to look for to identify the real deal.</p>

<p>[Lozzless] has a steady hand and plenty of confidence in his hacking skills. The video above is worth watching for the full eight minutes. In it you&#8217;ll see him convert a lens into what he calls a SuperMacro lens with a working aperture. The process involves fashioning a connector ring from a lens cap, modifying an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF-S_lens_mount">Electro-focus lens mount</a>, and assembling the parts to do his bidding. We don&#8217;t have the photography background to fully understand what he&#8217;s doing here, but we can appreciate the process, and the results are shown at the end of the clip.</p>

<p>[Bhautik Joshi's] <a href="http://cow.mooh.org/2010/04/fisheye-tin-cam.html">fisheye lens hack</a> works well and looks OK too. It uses a door peephole from the hardware store as the fisheye and a slide projector lens to enlarge the image for proper sizing on the camera&#8217;s sensor. He included an EOS lens adapter so that it is easy to install and remove, then grabbed a soda can and some foam for the rest of the build. This will take those fun bendy pictures but don&#8217;t forget that you can <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/12/21/removing-fisheye-distortion/">correct for that in software</a> if you wish.</p>

<p>[Ryubin's] experiments with spherical video continue. This time around he&#8217;s using two cameras, both with fisheye lenses, to <a href="http://www.ryubin.com/panolab/panoflash/exhibition_spherecam_experiment01.html">capture 360 degree by 360 degree video</a>. The two cameras mount back to back and each record a 360 degree vertical view in a 180 degree horizontal range. By stitching the two recordings together and synchronizing them by comparing moving objects a seamless spherical video is produced.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s got one more trick up his sleeve with this setup. The tripod mount has a pivot point that allows the two cameras to shoot side-by-side instead of back-to-back. This produces a hemispherical video that is stereoscopic. That&#8217;s a pretty cheap way to make this type of 3D imaging compared to some of <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5441912/worlds-first-3d-camcorder-will-cost-21000-this-fall">the CES offerings</a>.</p>
<p>There are a few example videos up on his webpage. If you missed it earlier this month, he&#8217;s the guy that build <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/01/04/360-degree-video-for-next-to-nothing/">a spherical video setup using a light bulb</a>.</p>

<p>[Bhautik] is on <a href="http://cow.mooh.org/2009/07/plungercam-2-cheaper-and-more.html">version 2 of his tilt-shift lens</a>, and wrote in to share what he has learned. Some aspects of the design on version 1 made it a bit quirky to use. You had to hold the lens in place, manually adjusting the focus. This meant that no two shots were the same. Since [Bhautik] wanted to do time lapse with it, he needed to re design it. He kept it simple and cheap, around $22 total.  Version two takes a lot longer to setup for the shot, but the result is reproducible. This means he can make <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/captin_nod/3763460228/">his tilt-shift time lapse videos</a>.</p>

<p>For those that have them, the ATC2K action camera is a decent little piece of equipment. It is waterproof and can save video for roughly 30 minutes on a flash card. The viewing angle of the lens leaves something to be desired though. This has been remedied in newer models. [raalst] shows us how to <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/wider-angle-view-for-your-old-ATC2K-action-cam/">modify the ATC2K to install a new, wider angle lens</a>, while retaining the waterproof seal.  He also takes us through a necessary mod to ensure clear video under water since the new lens was not initially intended for it.  Just in case you are curious, he&#8217;s using his for <a href="http://www.subcommittee.com/">hobby radio controlled submarine</a> dives.</p>
