<p>[Oomlout] has created an <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Expermentation-Kit-How-to-get-Started-wi/">Arduino Experimentation Kit</a> that uses basic sensors, buttons, and LEDs to teach electronics and programming. Printed overlays are secured on a breadboard, indicating components and connections. <span>The Arduino is then used to drive the circuit. Examples include driving motors, using shift registers, and making beeps with a piezo element. These are backed up by</span><span> explanations and code. The breadboarding kit is very similar to the classic 300-in-1 project kits marketed to beginners. </span>In addition, all of the materials are <a href="http://www.oomlout.com/ARDX/">released as open source</a>. <a href="http://www.oomlout.co.uk/arduino-experimentation-kit-ardx-p-183.html">Kits are also available</a> that include everything needed to create the circuits.</p>

<p>[oomlout] has released this <a href="http://oomlout.com/blog/2009/03/fancy_yourself_a_robotic_arm_d.html">Opensource robotic arm</a>. It is 5 axis, using cheap hobby servos. The total cost, including <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:387">having it cut at thingaiverse.com</a> is roughly $150. The plans include all the pieces, down to the servo controller. This means that you&#8217;ll have to supply your own microcontroller and programming. They do state &#8220;We can guarantee it is loads of fun to play with, and we think potentially very useful for more serious pursuits.&#8221; and we would like to test that guarantee. We&#8217;ve been keeping an eye out for this ever since the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/01/19/servo-switch-assemblies/">servo switch assemblies</a>.</p>

<p>The team at <a href="http://oomlout.com/">oomlout</a> has continued to post all the methods they use in their manufacturing process. This time around <a title="Open Manufacturing - (How to Build 30 (SERB) Kits)" href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Open_Manufacturing_How_to_Build_30_SERB_Kits/">it&#8217;s the kitting process</a>: how they actually packaged 30 identical <a title="Simple servo bot plans  - Hack a Day" href="http://hackaday.com/2008/11/22/simple-servo-bot-plans/">SERB</a> kits in an efficient fashion. We covered their <a title="Automated wire cutter and stripper  - Hack a Day" href="http://hackaday.com/2009/01/03/automated-wire-cutter-and-stripper/">wire cutting bot</a> before, but they&#8217;ve got other dedicated machines like a <a title="Sticker Sheet Measurer by oomlout - Thingiverse" href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:276">sticker cutter</a>. The stickers are used to remove all the cut acrylic pieces from the laser cutter as one unit. They&#8217;ve got some other tricks like using a scale to count bolt quantities, and an egg timer to keep track of the laser cutting. All of their envelopes are printed using a parallel port inkjet that has been modified to work with any thickness paper.</p>

They constructed a <a title="WIRC-Wire Cutter and Stripper - a set on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/snazzyguy/sets/72157612098886506/">machine to do the job for them</a>. It has three main components: a servo driven wire feeder to measure the length, a two servo wire stripper that uses an exacto blade, and finally a wire cutter made from snips and a drill motor. The machine is controlled using an Arduino. They&#8217;ve <a title="Automatic Wire Cutter and Stripper by oomlout - Thingiverse" href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:268/">published all the plans and code</a> to Thingiverse incase anyone else wants to build a similar machine for their own kit shop. A video of the machine is embedded below.</p>

<p>When you&#8217;re prototyping a new project, sometimes all you need is a switch. The folks at oomlout were tired of constantly having to rewire things, so they built a <a title="How to Make a Little Switch and Potentiometer Box for Your Arduino" href="http://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Make_a_Little_Switch_and_Potentiometer_Box_/">universal switch box for the Arduino</a>. It has five potentiometers plus three switches. They&#8217;ve put together a software package that monitors the switches and can show you a live view of the knob positions. Have a look at the video below for a demo.</p>

<p>oomlout has posted some interesting <a title="How to Make an Arduino Controlled Servo Robot (SERB)" href="http://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Make_an_Arduino_Controlled_Servo_Robot_SER/">plans for a simple robot</a>. It&#8217;s based around an Arduino and is a platform similar to the Parallax <a title="Boe-Bot Robot Information" href="http://www.parallax.com/tabid/411/Default.aspx">Boe-Bot</a>. The Arduino sends PWM signals to continuos rotation servos that drive the two main wheels. All of the structural components are laser cut from acrylic with slots to hold standard hex nuts. It&#8217;s an interesting technique, but the design has a lot of potential for improvement. Right now it uses two different power supplies and a breadboard for simple connections. From the video below, you can see that the balance could be improved as well.<span id="more-6183"></span></p>
