<p>This looks like someone watched the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/06/05/obsolete-technology-band/">Obsolete Technology Band</a>, and had to have one of their own. It appears to be a dock, <a href="http://www.nerdnews.it/2009/04/13/hard-disk-ispeaker-gli-hard-disk-che-suonano/">driving several different sizes of old hard drives</a>. While the concept isn&#8217;t new, we thought they did a decent job of putting the whole display together. It could be fun to have that mounted on our wall, waiting for geek friends to impress.</p>

Then they created an <a href="http://www.pyjax.net/blog/1/2008/07/17/atomizing-thoms-virtual-copy/">atomizer of the head</a> and put it up on their ungodly huge <a href="http://i.document.m05.de/?p=492">8160&#215;4000 pixel multi-touch display</a>. The video above was created by <a href="http://i.document.m05.de/?p=505">tracking the background image to orient and overlay the projection</a>.</p>

The guitar and bass line are performed by a <a href="http://oldcomputers.net/c64.html">Commodore 64</a>. An Intel 14.4 external modem uses DTMF tones for the first part of of the lead and a <a href="http://oldcomputers.net/ti994a.html">TI-99/4A</a> beeps out the rest. The TI is also used as a speech synthesizer and a Maxtor harddrive plays the the vocal track.</p>

The entire video for the song House of Cards was &#8220;filmed&#8221; using lasers.</p>
<p>The system, known as <a href="http://www.geometricinformatics.com/">Geometric Informatics</a> and <a href="http://www.velodyne.com/lidar/">Velodyne Lidar</a>, scanned the entire environment 900 times a minute to capture an entire party in real time.</p>
<p>The video was originally set to be released in mid July, but appears to have been moved back.</p>

Frontman Thom Yorke mentioned on NPR that the contest was essentially a joke, since the <span style="font-style: italic;">Nude</span> track is recorded at 6/8 timing and 63bpm, much slower than traditionally mixed music. The above video from [James Houston] is one of the most creative entries. Using <a href="http://www.vimeo.com/1109226">old computer hardware he has recreated the track</a> in a very unique way. He uses a Sinclair ZX Spectrum for the guitar track, a dot matrix printer for the drums, a scanner for bass, and a hard drive array for vocals.</p>

<p><span id="more-1933"></span></p>
<p><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1BU4f2Xj_hs&amp;hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1BU4f2Xj_hs&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />Scanners used to be the hot peripherals of their day; now many are reduced to collecting dust. Revive these relics and put them to <a href="http://www.ganjatron.net/misc/scanjet/">good use as instruments</a>. </p>
<p><embed width="400" height="345" src="http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/1210856/afrotech_hard_disk_speakers_star_wars_theme.swf" wmode="transparent" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed>In the Radiohead video we saw an array of hard drives used as speakers. Afrotechmod created the video above featuring the Star Wars theme. He <a href="http://afrotechmods.com/cheap/hdspeakers/hdspeakers.htm">wired the audio input directly to the coils</a> used to control head and platter motion. Since all hard drives are different it may take a little poking around to get the desired effect.</p>
<p><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2KsHuPSCRIM&amp;hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2KsHuPSCRIM&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />Dot matrix printers are well known for their iconic sounds. In the above video, [Sue Harding] tells us about her experiences with them and how she plays around with color and character density to create new sounds. <br /><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dsg4P-e10MQ&amp;hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dsg4P-e10MQ&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br />Lastly, we have the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. While it&#8217;s not entirely clear what program is being used, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_audio_trackers#ZX_Spectrum">there are quite a few audio trackers available</a> for the platform. The video above is a ZX Spectrum demo made by Digital Reality.</p>
