<p>[Thomas Renck] recently picked up a 1000mW wireless video transmitter that he ultimately planned to mount in an RC plane. Before he strapped it on a plane to potentially kiss it goodbye for good, he wanted to <a href="http://x-inferno.com/projects/long-range-video-surveillance-robot" target="_blank">play with it a while</a> to see what it was capable of.</p>
<p>After a friend helped him determine the camera’s maximum range (about 1900 feet on open ground), he thought it would be fun to strap it on his nitro R/C truck. That didn’t work out so well due to some vibration issues, so he constructed a makeshift R/C car from the shipping box the camera arrived in, along with some other odds and ends.</p>
<p>As you can see in the video below, the propeller-driven “Boxmobile” zips along quite nicely. The video feed from the camera is pretty impressive too, allowing him to easily guide the car while it&#8217;s well out of sight.</p>
<p>At nearly $350, the self-proclaimed “ghetto-bot” is certainly not cheap, though we hear body repairs are a piece of cake!</p>

<p>As winter is officially upon us, we’re pretty sure that the last thing most of you are thinking about is mowing your lawn. We would argue that it’s actually the ideal time to do so &#8211; that is, if you are interested in automating the process a bit.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.robert-smith.net/my-projects/how-to-build-a-rc-lawn-mower/" target="_blank">[Robert Smith] has spent a lot of time thinking about his lawn</a>, wanting a way to sit back and relax while doing his weekly trimming. He set off for the workshop to build an R/C electric lawnmower, and thoroughly documented the process in order to help you do the same.</p>
<p>On his web site, you will find a series of videos detailing every bit of the solar charged R/C lawnmower&#8217;s construction, taking you through the planning phases all the way to completion. [Robert] has provided just about anything you could possibly need including parts lists, schematics, code, and more.</p>

<p>[HammyDude] built the RC aircraft out of laminated foam board. He&#8217;s had it for years and it&#8217;s survived multiple crashes. You can see the one real injury suffered, a snapped fuselage at the leading edge of the wings. He repaired it with popsicle sticks and it&#8217;s been going strong ever since.</p>
<p>In addition to the wooden reinforcements he&#8217;s covered the fuselage with fibrous packing tape (you know, the stuff with the strings running in it). There&#8217;s also a carbon fiber tube at the leading edge of each wing. It&#8217;s light, strong, and robust (with the exception of the propeller of which he&#8217;s broken about 10).</p>
<p>Check out the video after the break for an explanation of the aircraft, list of materials, and HD images of the patterns you need to make them yourself. The only thing you won&#8217;t see is flight footage.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting article about <a href="http://www.openmusiclabs.com/learning/digital/input-matrix-scanning/hacks/">reading data from shift registers using less than three pins</a>. 74HC165 shift registers are a popular choice for adding inputs to a microcontroller. They have a parallel input register which can be read using the latch, then shifted into a microcontroller via the data and clock pins. For those counting, that&#8217;s the three pins normally associated with driving these devices.</p>
<p>This hack first does away with the latch pin. The addition of a carefully trimmed RC circuit (capacitor is charged by the clock pin, then the resistor lets that cap slowly discharge) means that the device will not latch until after the clock stops toggling. This technique drops the control down to just two pins (data and clock). You can still use hardware SPI to read the data using this method. It&#8217;s the same as <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/11/05/controlling-shift-registers-via-spi/">using SPI to drive 595 shift registers</a> except the microcontroller reads data instead of writing it.</p>
<p>But wait, there&#8217;s more! The diagram above actually shows a way of reading this shift register with just one pin. Notice that the clock and data pins are now connected to just one of the microcontroller pins. The data pin has an added resistor, which keeps the current low enough that it will not compete with the clock signal coming from the microcontroller. In between clock pulses, the microcontroller switches from output to input to read the data pin on each cycle. Give it a try, it&#8217;s a fun experiment!</p>

<p>When [Mark] sent in the tip about this crawling zombie prop he said that it didn&#8217;t sound scary but warned us that it is terrifying when you see it. He&#8217;s absolutely right, the video after the break shows some remarkably undead movement from the thing.</p>
<p>This <a href="http://www.teambac.com/web_hall/crawler.html">crawler is actually radio controlled</a>. Details are brief, but there&#8217;s plenty of pictures and the start of a build tutorial for the hardware. A wood frame serves as collar-bone and spine for the zombie. Attached to the spine are two  motors which allow independent shoulder operation. We&#8217;d wager that the realistic movements are due to a talented operator at the controls, but it can&#8217;t be too hard to master if you play around with it for a while. It looks like the initial build was headless, but we think the addition of the zombie head really makes finishes out the project!</p>

<p>So you’ve got a $40k+ RED Epic video camera and you need to get it from <a href="http://www.omstudios.de/#2126063/OM-Copter-gives-wings-to-the-RED-epic" target="_blank">all the way down here to all the way up there.</a> Sure, you could rent an expensive crane and take your shots from above that way, but why bother with that when you can fly instead?</p>
<p>German video effects company OMStudios decided that it was up to the task of finding a crane alternative, so they built a crazy octocopter drone to get the camera up to where they needed it. Figuring that if four rotors is good eight is even better, the group’s octocopter lifts the camera to heights of up to 150 meters, which is pretty impressive considering the weight of its payload.</p>
<p>While we might be a little hesitant to trust such an expensive camera to a glorified RC helicopter, it actually looks pretty solid from the video. Besides, we’re pretty sure these guys know what they are doing since they have a RED camera in the first place.</p>

<p>It’s always interesting to see new and innovative means of robot locomotion. At the recent “Innovation Japan 2011” conference researchers from Osaka University unveiled the <a href="http://technabob.com/blog/2011/09/30/omni-crawler-crawling-robot/" target="_blank">Omni-Crawler</a>, which is aimed at changing the way both robots and people move.</p>
<p>The Omni-Crawler’s movement is provided by Omni-Balls, an Osaka University creation that moves in all directions, not unlike a swivel caster. The Omni-Ball is simpler and sturdier in design however, making it far more robust than its office chair counterpart.</p>
<p>Several of these Omni-Balls are attached to the crawler, and wrapped in a rubber tank tread like gripper material. The resultant motion is predictably omnidirectional, though we’re guessing you figured that out already thanks to Osaka University’s naming conventions.</p>
<p>While we’re not sure this technology will be making it into production cars any time soon, we would certainly be OK with having an RC Omni-Crawler to play around with in the office.</p>

<p>Along with hobby electronics, flying RC planes is one of [Diederich’s] favorite hobbies. When out in the field, he prefers to use an Aurora 9 radio controller, and while the remote is great, he was a bit disappointed in Hitec’s telemetry sensor lineup. He says that the sensors are pretty decent, though limited, and <a href="http://www.d68.nl/sensorboard/index.html" target="_blank">he was positive he could build a better telemetry solution</a>.</p>
<p>His sensor board is completely open source, and comes with a long list of features. First and foremost, it emulates all of the messages that can be sent to the radio controller by Hitec’s off the shelf models, making it a simple drop-in replacement. He uses an ATMega8L microcontroller to run the show, including all sorts of input pins and connectors to support GPS as well as voltage and current monitoring.</p>
<p>He has made a DIY kit available for purchase online, but all of the sensor’s schematics and a BOM are available for free, should you desire to roll your own.</p>
<p>We love seeing DIYers show up manufacturers in this way, especially when they share the goods with their fellow hobbyists. Nice job!</p>

[Alex]&#8216;s build happily bucks that trend, and <em>technically</em> gives the SNES an analog controller.</p>
<p>The build uses an <a href="http://mbed.org/">mBed microcontroller</a> to capture the radio&#8217;s button and stick positions. This is sent through a two shift registers to produce the 16-bit packet required of the SNES controller protocol. [Alex] posted all the <a href="http://brainlubeonline.com/Futaba2SNES/CODE.html">software</a> for his build, and from the looks of it the code seems pretty portable. [Alex] says he&#8217;s working on getting his Sega Saturn running with his Futaba, so we can&#8217;t wait to see some <em>Panzer Dragoon</em> action. <p>R.I.P sand-colored radio-controlled truck. Your life ended with a bang and in doing so, saved some lives. This little work-horse is a hack that [Ernie Fessenden] put together and sent to his brother [Sergeant Chris Fessenden] who is on a tour of duty in Afghanistan.</p>
<p>[Chris'] team is trained to be on the lookout for roadside bombs, but [Ernie] wanted to sent him something cool that could also keep him safe. By adding a camera to the hood of the Traxxis Stampede and using a gun-mountable LCD screen, the soldiers now have a way to see what&#8217;s on the road ahead from their armored Humvee. Sounds like it would work just fine right? Well the hack just got a big endorsement when <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/remote-controlled-truck-soldier-afghanistan-saves-soldiers-lives/story?id=14225434">it tripped an IED made of around 500 pounds of explosives</a>. [Chris] and five other soldiers on patrol were unharmed in the event, and [Ernie] already has a replacement model on the way.</p>

<p>We abhor vandalism, but we love art. Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.concretedisciples.com/feature-skateboarding-articles/item/4306-d*faces-ridiculous-redux.html">a skateboard hack that lets skate punks young and old tag their turf</a> while they ride. [D*Face], a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D*Face">multimedia street artist</a> who grew up in London, added a mounting system to the bottom of his skateboard which includes a can of spray paint. We&#8217;re a bit surprised that there&#8217;s room enough for that, but the system fits nicely. They&#8217;re not locked into a constant stream because the system lets the rider (or a bystander) actuate the spray can via remote control.</p>
<p>But the brush is only one part of the painter&#8217;s tool chain. To get the most interesting effect, a pool was painted white to serve as canvas and a troupe of skaters was unleashed on it to try out the modified boards. Check out the video after the break to see the colorful and pleasing curves that result. We just hope nobody bailed and smeared the canvas at the same time.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a fantastic project that lets to <a href="http://bfreebandingtalktheplanet.runboard.com/t2396">drive a hexapod around the room using an RC controller</a>. [YT2095] built the bot after replacing the servo motors on his robot arm during an upgrade. The three cheapies he had left over were just begging for a new project, and he says he got the first proof-of-concept module put together in about an hour. Of course what you see above has gone through much improvement since then.</p>
<p>The three motors are epoxied together, with the one in the middle mounted perpendicular to the motors on either side of it. Those two are responsible for the front and rear leg on each side, with the third motor actuating the two middle legs. It&#8217;s a design we&#8217;re already familiar with having seen the smaller Pololu version. You might want to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/01/18/the-polulu-3-servo-hexapod/">check that one out</a> as there&#8217;s some slow motion video that shows how this works.</p>
<p>[YT2095] added control circuitry that includes an RF receiver. This lets him drive the little bot around using a transmitter with four momentary push switches on it. We love the idea of using copper clad for the foot pads.</p>

<p>A flying RC super hero?</p>
<p>No, you’re not imagining things. Maker [Greg Tanous] loves both RC airplanes and super heroes, so he thought it would be awesome to <a href="http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/07/radio-controlled-flying-super-hero.html" target="_blank">combine his two loves into one spectacular toy</a>. The RCSuperhero comes in two flavors, measuring 75&#8243; and 57&#8243; tall. The larger plane can be purchased as a kit, but the smaller unit is only available in plan form.</p>
<p>The flying superhero weighs in at just about three pounds, and is constructed from foam, carbon fiber, and various other lightweight materials. When using the recommended motor, the RCSuperhero can be launched from a standing position, doing away with the need for runways. The craft looks to be just as maneuverable as any regular RC airplane, making it easy for any seasoned pilot to pick up the controls and get started.</p>
<p>RC planes are pretty cool, but we’ve got to admit that the idea of a vertically launching, flying superhero sounds like a lot of fun!</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.jcopro.net/2011/05/21/creepy-glowing-rc-box/">an odd little box</a> that might get those creative juices flowing for the upcoming Halloween season. [Jeremy's] creepy glowing box has a pair of ping-pong ball eyes which diffuse the red light from a pair of LEDs. Both the lid and they eyes move, and the whole thing is set up for wireless control.</p>
<p>The majority of the parts came from a toy RC helicopter that [Jeremy] had sitting in his junk bin. After close inspection he found that the electronics included to motor drivers for the two rotors, as well as two servo motors which worked to steer the aircraft. One of those servos has been repurposed to aim the gaze of they eyes left and right, the other servo is used to lift and close the lid of the box. This leaves the two motor controllers, one of which switches the LEDs on and off. The other doesn&#8217;t really have a purpose yet. He tried adding one wheel to the box, but turning that on just makes the whole thing crash to the floor. Check out what he&#8217;s done so far in the clip after the fold.</p>

<p>[lenny] decided to build a <a href="http://itslennysfault.com/adding-auto-fire-to-a-computer-mouse-555-timer">555-based auto-firing mouse</a> based on a 555 after seeing <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/12/20/adding-auto-fire-to-a-computer-mouse/">a similar PIC-based project</a> we posted earlier. Lenny&#8217;s version is self-contained in one mouse without requiring a second mouse to act as the rapid-fire button. It uses only a handful of components, costs less than $5 to build, and doesn&#8217;t require any programming.</p>
<p>But then, [wfdudley] shakes things up a bit. He added a 4022 counter IC and some diodes to act as logical &#8220;OR&#8221; gates in order to <a href="http://www.dudley.nu/blinky/">create a unique blinking pattern</a> (short-short-long) for the lights on a friend&#8217;s RC airplane. While this project involves more components, it&#8217;s definitely a trickier problem to solve with a 555 timer IC. We love seeing people choosing simplicity in design over popular off-the-shelf microcontroller frameworks as these two have done.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t forget, the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/01/25/555-design-contest-win-1500-in-prizes/">555 Design Contest</a> is still going strong, and you&#8217;ve got the entire month of February to submit your awesome designs. We wanted to highlight two of the more clever 555-based hacks that we&#8217;ve had in our backlog for a while, though.</p>
