<p>[qDot] recently got his hands on a MyKeepon toy and after messing with it a bit, decided to <a href="http://www.nonpolynomial.com/2011/11/09/mykeepon-hacking/" target="_blank">tear it down to see what was inside.</a> He had hopes of easily modding the toy, but like most adventures in hacking, things might take a while longer than he first imagined.</p>
<p>In his teardown you can see the various components that make up the MyKeepon, including a trio of motors for movement, along with a series of buttons and a microphone used to interact with the toy. Of course, the part that interested him the most was MyKeepon’s circuit board, since that’s where the real work would begin.</p>
<p>There, he discovered two main processor Padauk processor chips, described as “Field Programmable Processor Arrays” in their data sheets. He says that the brand is well known for lifting text verbatim from PIC data sheets, so he doesn’t have a ton of faith in what’s printed there. Sketchy documentation aside, he poked around on the I2C bus connecting the two chips and was able to sniff a bit of traffic. He is documenting his findings as he goes along, which you can see more of on <a href="https://github.com/qdot/keepoff/blob/master/doc/keepon_reverse_engineering.asciidoc" target="_blank">his Github project site.</a></p>
<p>He has made a few simple modifications to the toy already, but there&#8217;s plenty more to do before he has complete control over it. His work is bound to make tons of MyKeepon fans happy, including our own [Caleb Kraft], whose love for the toy can be seen in the video below taken at last year’s CES.</p>

<p>[Nathan], a member of the DangerousPrototypes forums, was looking for a project he could use to enter the 7400 logic competition they are holding. His kids had a small ride on police car, but the light bar on top contained no lights, and the car made no sounds when his children were in pursuit of baddies around the house. [Nathan] had all the inspiration he needed, and took to his workshop in order to <a href="http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&amp;t=2989" target="_blank">fix this glaring oversight by the toys’ creators.</a></p>
<p>He designed a circuit based loosely around a Cylon-style light that he saw a while back at the Evil Mad Scientist Labs, which employed an oscillator and a 4107 decade counter to control the lights. His design uses a 74HC04 hex inverter as the oscillator, while the decade counter is used to modulate the siren’s frequency and control the rotating LED beacons.</p>
<p>The final result is great if you ask us. An “unnamed adult female” in the house was not nearly as impressed by the additions based upon how much time [Nathan] spent on the project, but his children were absolutely thrilled.</p>

<p>If you have one of those annoying dancing (Santa/Elvis/Frankenstein) decorations sitting around collecting dust, you could always <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Noizy-Santa-Mummy/?ALLSTEPS" target="_blank">repurpose it like [mischka] did.</a> He originally wanted to enter <a href="http://hackaday.com/2010/12/27/santa-pede-challenge-take-two/" target="_blank">our Santa-Pede challenge</a> and purchased a dancing Santa, but time eventually got the best of him. With no other use for it in mind, he decided to make his dancing Christmas toy into a fun Halloween decoration.</p>
<p>An electronic rendition of “Jingle Bells” isn’t exactly the scariest thing around, so he dismantled the dancing toy and started fiddling with the sound board. A few well placed resistors later, his circuit-bent Santa Claus started to sound like he had five too many egg nogs, which was perfect for the dancing mummy [mischka] had in mind.</p>
<p>He transplanted some LEDs from Santa’s base into his head, and masked it off with some electrical tape so that only the eyes were visible. He then wrapped the mummy in the requisite bloodied bandages and set him out for the kids to enjoy.</p>
<p>Since it’s hard to find someone who genuinely likes these dancing toys, we think this is a great way to make them useful again. If you’ve got a few of these things kicking around, we suggest reenacting the dance routine from Thriller using an army of Santa-zombies and sending a video our way.</p>

<p>[Jaroslav] was racing slot cars with his son not too long ago, but like many of us discovered in our youth, driving cars around a small oval track can get dull after awhile. Rather than buy more track sections, <a href="http://wordpress.crazylab.de/?p=161" target="_blank">he decided to fiddle with their cars a bit</a> to make racing them a little more exciting.</p>
<p>After removing the top of his slot car, [Jaroslav] found that it cruised around corners with ease, giving him a distinct advantage over his son. He did the same with his son’s car to level the playing field, then he decided to add a few extra LEDs to make driving around the small track more lively.</p>
<p>Now, this obviously isn’t the most advanced of modifications, but it is a great example of extending the useful life of a toy by using cheap, easy to access components. We think that it would be reasonable to add even more features to the cars/track such as speed-dependent lighting or lap counters without changing the car dynamics all that much.</p>

<p>YouTube user [onefivefour] posted a video of his <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1cy_k4ht6k">hacked up toy robot hand</a>. These cheap <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-833-12-Robot-Hand/dp/B000ID1DU0">robot hands</a> usually only use one wire to move all five fingers. [onefivefour] improved upon the design and added five servos to allow independent control of each digit.</p>
<p>The servos are controlled by a PICAXE microcontroller, and [onefivefour] is willing to share the code. A few pressure sensors in the fingertips would turn this build into a great test bed for future development. It would also be great for an [Anakin Skywalker] Halloween costume if anyone on the planet ever wanted that specific costume.</p>
<p>[onefivefour] says he only spent $6 on his and while there&#8217;s more money sunk into the servos, it was probably a good investment. We love seeing hacked up pieces of plastic like the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/07/22/modded-wall-e-becomes-a-real-robot/">fully functional Wall-E</a> or the <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/06/09/tablet-controlled-disco-droid/">dancing Androids</a>. <p>For this week’s hack, [Dino] was working on a mechanical cat toy, but the project fell apart towards the end for some reason or another. With time running out, <a href="http://hackaweek.com/hacks/?p=314" target="_blank">he had to come up with something</a> on pretty short notice, using whatever he happened to have on hand. Luckily he picks up some seriously weird stuff at the local thrift store and had a disembodied doll’s head kicking around for this last minute project.</p>
<p>Taking a cue from Toy Story’s [<a href="http://www.the-leaping-lamp.com/toy-story-characters-mutant-toys.html" target="_blank">Sid Phillips</a>], [Dino’s] doll’s head hexapod is as creepy as it is simple. He had a remote controlled hexapod from RadioShack sitting around, and thought it would be fun to combine it with the doll’s head. He replaced the dolls eyes with a handful of LEDs, which are green as the hexapod retreats, but glow a bright red as it advances towards you. The only way it could be any creepier is if [Dino] added a voice box that plaintively called for &#8220;mommy&#8221; as the doll crawls around!</p>
<p>It’s a relatively goofy project, but it gave us a good chuckle. The most disturbing highlight of the build is when [Dino] removes the doll’s eyes using a wood drill bit around the 6:00 mark.</p>

<p>A flying RC super hero?</p>
<p>No, you’re not imagining things. Maker [Greg Tanous] loves both RC airplanes and super heroes, so he thought it would be awesome to <a href="http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/07/radio-controlled-flying-super-hero.html" target="_blank">combine his two loves into one spectacular toy</a>. The RCSuperhero comes in two flavors, measuring 75&#8243; and 57&#8243; tall. The larger plane can be purchased as a kit, but the smaller unit is only available in plan form.</p>
<p>The flying superhero weighs in at just about three pounds, and is constructed from foam, carbon fiber, and various other lightweight materials. When using the recommended motor, the RCSuperhero can be launched from a standing position, doing away with the need for runways. The craft looks to be just as maneuverable as any regular RC airplane, making it easy for any seasoned pilot to pick up the controls and get started.</p>
<p>RC planes are pretty cool, but we’ve got to admit that the idea of a vertically launching, flying superhero sounds like a lot of fun!</p>

<p>While the kits are great, he says that the range of experiments they provide can be a bit limited, so he decided to swap out the kit’s sound module for something far more useful &#8211; a PICAXE-08M. The space left by removing the sound module was pretty small, but [Stan] got everything to fit without too much hassle. His modification allows his students to program the PICAXE, as well as utilize four of the uC’s output pins.</p>
<p>Needless to say, the addition of the PICAXE module was a huge hit with his students, allowing them to create far more exciting circuits. [Stan] has been revising his system over the years, adding extra output pins, enabling lamp and motor control, as well as tweaking his setup to respond to IR commands.</p>
<p>We think [Stan’s] work is pretty awesome, and we’re still wondering how this flew under our radar for so long. He says that his students vary from preschool kids to centenarians, so if you’ve got someone that you would like to introduce to the fun world of electronics, we suggest picking up one of these kits and getting to work.</p>

<p>[Laurence] tinkers around the house quite a bit, making all sorts of fun interactive toys for his children to play with. <a href="http://electro-mcu-stuff.blogspot.com/2011/05/meet-mr-clappidoo.html" target="_blank">Mr. Clappidoo is a toy that he finished a while back</a>, which bears a striking resemblance to <a href="http://hackaday.com/2011/04/26/papydoo-is-watching-you/" target="_blank">one of his projects we recently showed you, Papydoo</a>. This is not a coincidence, as Papydoo was created after Mr. Clappidoo was built, borrowing many features from his predecessor.</p>
<p>Who is your daddy and what does he do?</p>
<p>It’s a good thing you asked. Mr. Clappidoo uses an IR motion sensor to detect nearby objects, waking up and interacting with whatever crosses his path. He is capable of four different random moods ranging from angry to flirty. He projects these moods by changing the color of his LED-lit eyes as well as playing simple sounds. A balsa wood chest makes up Clappidoo’s body, and he repeatedly claps his <del>lid</del> mouth open and shut using a small servo, hence the name.</p>
<p>Like his other projects, [Lawrence] has focused his efforts to ensure that the three AA batteries used to power Clappidoo last as long as possible. He says that with moderate usage the device can run off the same set of batteries for a few months before needing replacement.</p>
<p>It’s a fun little contraption, sure to please the kids. Stick around for a quick video of Clappidoo in action.</p>

<p>As many of you are probably aware, Portal 2 was released last week, and gamers have been going crazy over it. Over the years, people have constructed replicas of their favorite in-game items and “characters”, including portal guns, companion cubes, and turrets.</p>
<p>After playing Portal 2 for a bit, [Jonathan] <a href="http://upnotnorth.net/projects/portal-turret-plushie/" target="_blank">wanted a turret of his own quite badly</a>. Rather than construct it from hard plastics and resins however, he decided he wanted to construct a cuddly turret that talked.</p>
<p>With the assistance of his friend [Leigh Nunan], he is now the proud owner of a plushie turret. It’s a bit smaller than you might expect, but it is packed full of turret personality. The plushie plays audio from the game, can sense motion near its face, detect if it has been tipped over, and also knows when it has been picked up. [Jonathan] added all of these features by stuffing an Arduino inside the turret, along with a wave shield for playing sounds. Proximity and motion sensing are provided via a trio of different sensors, enabling the turret to behave in the same way its in-game brethren do (minus the machine guns).</p>
<p>It really is a neat little toy, one we would no doubt be glad to have around. Keep reading to see a short video of his plushie turret in action.</p>

<p>So you&#8217;re stuck in a boring class and you can&#8217;t fight off the urge to hack something, even your pencil, to pass the time. Maybe you are performing a live electronics show and you drop your synth down a flight of stairs and all that you are left with is a handful of components, a screw terminal block and a pencil. There are thousands, perhaps millions of these kinds of situations and for each one the answer is the <a title="Sound Words" href="http://www.parallelpoints.com/node/35">solderless drawdio clone</a> by [Martin].</p>
<p>You may have seen the original <a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/10/09/drawdio-kit-lets-you-make-music-while-you-draw/">Drawdio</a> here before, a fun piece of technology that is<a href="http://hackaday.com/2008/11/08/stripboard-drawdio/"> simple enough to recreate</a>. This latest approach would make an excellent introductory project for a hacking workshop seeing as the guide is straightforward and the lack of soldering would make logistics so much easier. <p>[Paul] wrote in to show us this little project he did for his kids. His children love playing with their toy cars. In an effort to give them even more fun while playing, [Paul] <a href="http://fangletronics.blogspot.com/2009/08/toy-traffic-lights.html">built a stop light</a> for them. He&#8217;s using an ATtiny13 to run them and has the source code available on his site. Not only did the kids get a new toy, he got an excuse to go build something in his workshop.</p>

<p>[atduskgreg] <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/unavoidablegrain/3923695592/in/photostream/">posted this interesting setup to flickr</a>. He&#8217;s using two toy cars as a switch. He has wired into their metal undercarriages so when they collide, the circuit closes. We&#8217;ve <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/08/28/push-potentiometer-from-spares/">seen some</a> <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/01/29/led-push-buttons/">pretty nifty</a> home made interface items, but usually they are posted with a clear purpose or a project. This one is a little puzzling. Does he intend to keep using the cars or was he just fooling around? Is he working on a toy that does something when they crash? Was he merely bored and wanted to see what he could attach to his Arduino. We may never know.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.reynguyer.com/nerf.htm">In 1968 a guy by the name of [Rey Guyer] came up with an idea for a game</a>. It involved foam balls as game pieces. After failing to sell the game to Milton Bradley, he approached Parker Brothers. They bought his idea but ended up tossing the game itself and just marketing the foam ball. Named after the padding used on rollbars in offroad vehicles, Nerf balls were an instant success, 40 years ago, in 1969. Many of us have fond memories of Nerf, even before everything they produced was a weapon. That&#8217;s not to say we don&#8217;t appreciate the Nerf weapons. We certainly have seen some hackers do <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/05/17/nerf-centry-gun-with-image-recognition/">some fun</a> stuff <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/04/23/radio-controlled-nerf-tank/">with them</a>.</p>

<p>In this project, <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/coding4fun/archive/2009/08/18/9727393.aspx">a moon phase light is modified</a> to show the actual moon phase based off of your computer&#8217;s internal clock. From the factory, these moon lights are updated via an infra red remote control. He pulled the brains from the clock and replaced them with an Arduino. He then runs a program that updates the Arduino based off of the system clock. He has also added an internal clock to maintain the settings so constant updates are not required. It would have been nice to retain manual functions via the remote so you could press a button for a full moon without having to change your system time.</p>
