His new card has a fiduciary marker on the backside and directs you to his site. A flash app on the site displays a video where he tells you more about himself. The 3D grid of planes in the video varies in depth based on the brightness of the section. He has a few more <a title="James Alliban on Vimeo" href="http://vimeo.com/jamesalliban">AR and tracking demos on Vimeo</a>.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a <a title="F.A.T.  » Spinning vinyl - an ipod app" href="http://fffff.at/spinning-vinyl-ipod-app/">quick demo that FAT&#8217;s [Theo Watson] put together</a>. It uses the iPod&#8217;s accelerometer to measure how fast it&#8217;s spinning and plays the sound file accordingly. This only works on the iPod touch 2nd gen because of its curved case. He says scratching is coming next, but currently the app doesn&#8217;t know which direction it&#8217;s spinning since it&#8217;s measuring outward force. This project was done in response to [vanderlin]&#8216;s <a title="AR scratching on Vimeo" href="http://vimeo.com/4312616">AR scratching</a> that used fiducials on records.</p>

<p>Reader [Joe Saavedra] sent in his latest project: the <a title="technological reconnaissance : Spatialized Umbrella v01" href="http://jmsaavedra.com/weblog/?p=491">spatialized umbrella</a>. The base of each umbrella rib features an LED, speaker, and distance sensor. These are connected to an ATMega168 microcontroller running the Arduino environment. The IR sensor triggers a rain drop sound based on proximity. Shorter distances mean more droplets are played. The sounds are generated using a lookup table and the digital pins. You can see the demo video embedded below.</p>
<p>Using the Arduino environment without the associated board is part of another idea that [Joe] is working on. The <a title="MapDuino Project" href="http://hackduino.org/mapblog/">MapDuino Project</a> uses the standard Arduino hardware for programming, but then transfers the chip to a more barebones circuit in target project. They based their initial work on the <a title="Physical Computing at ITP | Tutorials / Setting up an Arduino on a breadboard" href="http://itp.nyu.edu/physcomp/Tutorials/ArduinoBreadboard">ITP breadboard Arduino</a>.<span id="more-10331"></span></p>

<p>[Alex] put together this <a title="64pixels are enough" href="http://tinkerlog.com/2009/03/21/64pixels-are-enough/">lovely minimal LED project</a>. The square pixel matrix is soldered directly to the microcontroller in the same style as <a title="LED Micro-Readerboard, version 2.0 - Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories" href="http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/microreader2">EMSL&#8217;s Micro-Readerboard</a>. During the prototyping phase he used resistors to limit the current from the programming board. The final product doesn&#8217;t use resistors and manages the current draw by only turning on a single pixel line at a time. The <a title="64pixels How To" href="http://tinkerlog.com/howto/64pixels/">illustrated assembly guide</a> is very thorough and should help your create an equally compact device. <p><a title="Main/Home Page" href="http://tinkerkit.com/">TinkerKit</a> is a collection of 20 different sensors and 10 actuators. It&#8217;s meant to make prototyping of physical computing devices much quicker/easier. The devices plug into a Sensor Hub <a title="arduino  - Hack a Day" href="http://hackaday.com/tag/arduino/">Arduino</a> shield. There is also a similar hub board that can emulate a keyboard; it translates sensor input directly to key strokes. It looks like a very ambitious project and it&#8217;s <a title="TinkerKit" href="http://tinker.it/now/2009/02/06/work-in-progress-tinkerkit/">still in development</a>. We love the idea though and think the wide variety of components will foster better final designs. The TinkerKit site covers the current component lineup and there&#8217;s a demo video embedded below.</p>

<p>Sometimes describing how a lock actually works can be the hardest part of teaching someone about lockpicking. [Mike Gee] has <a title="Bre Pettis | I Make Things" href="http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/12/09/things-mike-gee-lazzzored-a-tumbler-lock/">designed an acrylic lock</a> that may just be the ticket for these situations. All of the pieces are cut from clear acrylic. As you insert the key, you can see it raise the four pins up to the shear line. He says that it will definitely take some tweaking as you assemble it to get it to function smoothly. Embedded below is a video of the lock in use. <p><a title="The Beta Release" href="http://tbeta.nuigroup.com/">tbeta</a> is a new tool developed by the NUI Group Community. tbeta acts as an image processing layer to take in image data and output tracking data for multitouch applications. Whether <a title="Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR) - NUI Group" href="http://wiki.nuigroup.com/FTIR">FTIR</a> or <a title="Diffused Illumination (DI) - NUI Group" href="http://wiki.nuigroup.com/Diffused_Illumination">DI</a>, scratch built multitouch systems generate IR video streams that need to be processed to find fingertips. tbeta can take this or any arbitrary video stream and run it through a series of filters to generate the touch data. This data is sent as OSC <a title="reactable tuio" href="http://mtg.upf.edu/reactable/?tuio">TUIO</a>, a standard protocol for touch events. Along with the camera and input switcher, tbeta also aids in system calibration. I works on Windows, OSX, and Linux. While all of these were built using human input, we see potential for them to help improve standard visualizers. Hopefully, to bring out more information about what&#8217;s actually being played.
