  2. At the time of this invention in the 70ies, cameras and video digitizers were not affordable. Same for document scanners. And even the cheap digitizers in the early 90ies needed a few seconds to sample a BW image, and they cost a few hundred bucks. So this hack was pretty much the only way for a regular nerd to get images into a computer.
