The very last step was a total overhaul of the controller. This is plugged in horizontally and held in place with a spare 3 pin header (used to modify the drivers). I still kept that god-awful status indicator, although have yet to code it to do something cool like fade in and out or indicate a mode change. It is really irritating if you are working closely on the board and hit the reset button.
