Staff Update

staff-update-march-2014

Has it really been three months since our last Staff Update? Even though you’ve been enjoying posts from these guys for quite some time now a proper introduction is in order. From left to right, please join me in welcoming [Bil Herd], [Rich Bremer], [Nick Conn], and [Abe Connelly] to the team.

[Bil] started out with a guest post on the C128 which I absolutely loved. We got to talking and he mentioned an interest in putting out some video content. His first offering for Hackaday was the segment on calculating component heat. He has a few more in the pipeline and I’m sure he’d love to hear your ideas for the subjects of future videos.

I like to choose contributors who have a wide range of interests: [Rich] has a mechanical engineering background. Nick, who is working on his Ph.D., has quite a bit of experience with medical devices. This is not to be confused with the type of bio-medical hacking which [Abe] is interested in. Learn more about all of their backgrounds over on the Hackaday Staff page.

All of the people who have joined us over the last six months came form a pool of applications received after a September hiring announcement. I posted another one last week and have received numerous applications. I’m still reviewing them so don’t worry if you haven’t heard from me, you will soon!

  1. Welcome, new staff!

By the way, I’m not sure who to ask so I’m just going to throw this out there… do you have a community coordinator or are you looking for someone to fill such a role? I have felt for a long time that the hackaday community could really use some guidance. We have trolls who’ve been here fore as long as I can remember, there’s that infamous comment from Jeri Ellsworth about always knowing when Hackaday’s linked to her because of the comments she gets, and every post seems to get a few negative comments about why someone’s creation isn’t a hack, isn’t good enough, isn’t ___. It frustrates me to see these trends and attitudes year in and year out. While the greater maker community has expanded and become more inclusive, it seems our niche of the internet is stuck in an embarrassingly insular rut. A long time ago there was a post (by Caleb, maybe?) about doing something to foster a better community, but… did anything ever come of that?

      1. “People like me” meaning what, exactly? I tried to bring this up in as appropriate a place as possible. In general in other threads I try to give constructive comments and praise and stay on topic. I don’t respond to the trolls anymore. Should I do something different?

    1. Yes, I’ve been considering one as well but work has been keeping that from happening as as soon as I’d like. I’d guess I’ll have it in no later than Saturday (*maybe* tomorrow, but that’s a stretch!)
