Here’s a short guide for converting a Palm III GPS sled into a normal serial GPS receiver. The Palm III is old tech so its accessories can be picked up cheap and modified for other purposes. The GPS receiver needs to be separated from the Palm specific board and a few components need to be transfered between the two. Once that’s done you should have a standard serial GPS receiver. Here’s a cache in case the “Read” link fails.

I had a palm III streetfinder gps and it was awful. It took forever to get a lock and actually figure out its position.

I did this hack about a year ago. I used a USB cable to power the board, and put the resulting mess in an altoids can, soldering the antenna to the top. Good stuff!

I learned a LOT about the nature of GPS while toying with this.

For compatibility look for devices that are NMEA 0183 compliant. The data coming out of those is just a raw string of numeric data that all mapping software should (had damn well better) be able to parse out.

Interesting, in the UK PCWorld says they can sell you a palm iii with this gps on it, for the grand price of 97p. Unfortunatly its “temporarily out of stock”.

I actually tried doing this before, but not separating the two boards… You can just hook directly up to the serial tx/rx leads on the connection to the palm, and then still use the power AC Adaptor.

However, the circuitry must have been rather sensitive to the soldering heat, since after I soldered two small leads, the entire thing died. :(

Does anyone know if the Handspring ‘Magellan GPS Companion’ module can be hacked in this way? – I’ve got one lying in a drawer which I used to use with a long since dead Handspring Visor. It would be neat to make a GPS module out of it which I could use with my laptop. If anyone has any links etc, I’d appreciate a mail to iridium_sunrise@hotmail.com

I have MapSource (Middle East V2 Map), and a normal Serial (PCMCIA) GPS Module in my laptop. Problem is that when i start the Tracking, all the details of Maps are locked, a message on the bottom right corner shows ” Map Details Locked”, what does that mean? and how can i unlock it. I have already unlocked the maps with the key but i don’t understand how to solve this problem.
I don’t want to contact Garmin cause i am not using Garmin GPS Module.
So any suggestion or advice?
Only reason why i am using Garmin Map Source is that they have Middle East detailed maps.

You guys seem to know a lot more about GPS than I do.

I having been searching for quite awhile for an inexpensive GPS system that can be put into automobiles. The system doesn’t have to be fancy it only has to find the location of a car when needed.

Does anyone know of such a system?
If so, do you know how much it cost ? and
Where do I get GPS tracking software

I will explain how to make garmin metroguide work for gps and computer (unlocked for both), at the other hand i’ve got the question if it is possible somehow to make the city select v6/v7 work

THERE IS A METHOD BY HACKING YOR GARMIN METROGUIDE v7. First A WARNING: You have to change something in your regedit, this is an essential system-part in your computer. When you change the wrong things or delete something else than that i wil subscribe in the following, your computer or some programmes might not work anymore.

1)download the program Garmin metroguide v7
2)Go to start menu and type ‘regedit’ in the ‘run’ program
3)Now make a new key by clicking on the right mousekey. the key has to be exactly like this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESSOFTWAREGarminmapsourcefamilieseuropean metroguide v6]

Now the computer thinks that your metroguide is already is installed on your computer

4)Install the downloaded garmin metroguide v7
5)Once you have finished installing, you have to run ‘regedit again AND ONLY DELETE THE KEY ‘[European metroguide v6]

This old man needs help please. I have Streets and Trips and a new garmin vista c and I can’t make them work together. The garmin has only USB and the S&T map program needs a Nema feed. Is there a way to make these two work together? Hope it’s simple.(grin) Thanks for any help you can provide.

That’s because you have to make subfolders/keys:
for instance HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESSOFTWAREGarmin is an existing key than make new key by clicking right mouse key give it name mpasource, click on it make new key name it families etc etc.

I purchased a segway and it came with a etrex legend C and north american maps V7 city select…..
I live in Spain…..
Not much use to me but i would love to have the spanish/europe maps maps!
I can send you the maps and my unlock codes if this will help you. or copy/swap the disk.

Im new to this and have not tried much as the maps are useless to me. Only unlocked for myself out of curiosity.

I wonder if you can help ? I have a copy of Garmin Mapsource City Navigator v6 unlocked on my PC, I have two off 25 digit unlock codes and it works ok.When I try to download maps to my Garmin i3, it goes through the motions and appears to download everything, but it does not.I have a new 512 mb micro SD card for loading the maps on to as my original only has UK on it, although the Base Map is Europe. I contacted Garmin about this and they say I need the original 7 or 8 digit code that came with Mapsource before I can unlock the i3, I obviously don’t have the original code. I have i3 id no. and serial no., can you help!?

Is there anyway to upload City Navigator Europe v6 to Garmin Nuvi GPS? I have the 25 digit unlock code and it works fine on the computer but gives error “Can’t unlock maps” when uploaded to GPS. I don’t have the 7 or 8 digit code. I leave for vacation on Sunday and can’t find a copy of the program locally and don’t have time for it to get here if I order new version via internet. I tried the regedit trick posted by Frits to open Metroguide but it didn’t work for Navigator. I really would like to use GPS turn-by-turn for my trip.

I have Garmin City Navigator V6 for Australia copied from an original CD & have the Garmin Streetpilot 2610 unit. I only have the unlock code for the V5 disc & want to find a way to get the V6 maps onto the unit.

I have a garmin i3 which is showing detailed maps and has a detailed database but it will not provide turn by turn navigation. I have a set of City Navigator maps (Europe 7) which I can upload by usb, but the send turn by turn option is greyed out. has anyone any ideas on the pc software. Do I need a different unlock code?

can anyone tell me – is the unlock code generated for any of the garmin maps products directly generated based on and dependant upon the unique serial number or unit id of say a street pilot III GPS -
Say for example a valid unlock code for “europe city navigator v7″ which works for “customer A” – will this exact same unlock code work for “customer B” bearing in mind that “customer B” has obtained his copy of “europe city navigator v7″ from a different source ?

Has anybody tried IMG2GPS and SENDMAP to upload Mapsource Maps to your GPS without using Mapsource Uploading feature? These programs are free and apparently bypass the requirement for a code while transferring maps. Don’t have a GPS unit (so I can’t test it)but I have a few copy of Mapsource CityNavigator and I’m waiting for the answer to buy a unit. According to the myth it works pretty well with Metroguide and a garmin 60CX. It would be too cool to be true if it worked with a nuvi!!!!!!!!!

Don….I believe that is correct that the unlock codes for the device unit are associated with the unit ID and therefore must match the unit number to work. May not necessarily be a one-to-one-association bu there is some relationship. That’s why others have tried to get a matching set of unlock code and unit ID number, then hack the deivce and change its ID number to the known working one. I have lots of unlock codes but no unit IDs to go with them. Anyone know more about this?

Bado…..My experience is that it is not a problem getting the shared map data to load in the device, but unlocking it to function. Mapsource will load map data into your device without the device lock code, but then the device complains that it is not unlocked and won;t display it. I guess these other image loaders might bypass that issue, but I don;t think so. The problem is in the OS of the device.

Has anyone had luck finding matching sets of unit id numbers and their associated unlock codes? I have lots of codes that unlock City Select on my PC, but not on my GPS-V. Some shared codes I have found do contain the unit number and the customer code, but not for the map I want. And I have tried those customer codes on garmin.com and they say not valid. Garmin has probably turned them off. I need the code and a working unit id for City Slect v6 on a gps-v unit (I hope to hack the unit id number of my device as needed.)

– i think its criminal the prices Garmin charge – has anyone on the board managed to change the ID of their unit – Street Pilot III for instance – i have one coming in the post soon and dont want to pay huge money to get latest maps on it – id prefer to give some money to someone who is able to do whatever to my unit to help me get the latest maps on – i only need Uk / Ireland – i’m sure i’m not the only one in this position, or the only one who is disgusted with the high prices charged by Garmin …… any thoughts /offers anyone …..

By the way just so everyone is aware….Metroguide maps are not locked, and will function on any Garmin device with which they are compatible. Their main difference from City Select and City Navigator maps is that they do not support autorouting and turn-by-turn directions on the gps unit, but will on the pc. I don;t really use route directions so its not an issue for me. But you can create a route on the PC and download it. Metroguide disc images are readily available on share networks such as emule and Shareeza. They are fully detailed and up to date maps just like City Select and Navigator. Metroguide North America v6 works just fine on GPS-V, Vista, Legend, and others. No lock issues.

Just bought a garmin 60cx and uploaded Metroguide europe v7 maps in it. Found Metroguide on the Shareaza network for free. No codes were needed. I confirm that it does autoroute!!! I used IMG2gps and Sendmap. I’m now ready for my trip to Italy and still have money in pocket. I’m happy I kicked Garmin right between the legs with their expensive City Navigator.Many German forums indicate the procedure. Good luck.

Oh! Yes! Autorouting works very fine with metroguide v7 and img2gps software in my street pilot III. I upload maps via serial port RS232, it’s very slow! I cannnot upload to the memory card with the garmin programmer.
What software can used to merge several maps to obtain an unique bigger file?

Ok, well good news if this works for your 60cs and Streetpilot, but I have tried alternate loading software with metroguide on my GPS-V and autorouting does not work on the V. It is an older os so perhaps that is why. My main point was to let everyone who is struggling with city select and navigator know that metroguide maps are just as detailed and have no lock issues.

Hi, I recently purchased a legitimate copy of CN Australia V6 only to find that the maps have been activated twice before and the software cannot now be activated. I have v5 and am looking at an upgrade, but at $395, am reluctant if the upgrade to v6 is not substantial. If possible, could someone email me a valid 25-digit code so I can unlock on the PC only and evaluate. hi. i have two gps devices, one garmin etrex legend c and one garmin etrex vista cx. i have bought a map last year for garmin legend c. it works fine with the device. but it does not work with the vista cx. it says “maps are not unlocked”. how can i find a crack for the code for the gps etrex vista cx? is it possible? or is there anybody that can help me out with this problem?

i just purchased 60CSx; downloaded City Navigator Europe NT 2008 (w/crack codes). Works great on my laptop, but handheld 60CSx “Can’t Unlock Maps”. Can you help?
