i had an old nes in the basement and was thinking of making a pc case out the nes unit, but then i googled around saw there was a kit you could get to solder up a usb joystick for macs and pcs out of the old nes controller. grab some emulators and you’ve got some up down a b select start action.
Does anybody know which chip is used in the NES retro USB controller kit? Its sold for $16 here (http://www.sealiecomputing.com/retrozone/retrokit.html) but I know you can buy it for much cheaper somewhere else. It looks like all they did was take a USB controller chip and clip the unused wires.
i am a ammature videogame programmer for the computer. It would be kickass to use this for a game i made, but ordering parts online is iffy, and i dont have a credit card. does radioshack have these parts? and, if so, what are their names and specs for them?

A friend and I sat down on a friday evening and starting going at it. I ordered the parts and after a week of waiting and 3 hours of working on it Its done and works great!….
some issues… after youve got everything sodered in place its hard to get it to close right…
cut off a good chunck of the usb plastic… cut off the circle thing on the inside of the controller..and your set…XP picks it up quick and you are good to go. Great 3 to 4 hour project…hours of enjoyment afterwards.!
Why not try add up the “Key Katcher” with this USB plug in… So that way if you get all the way to the third or whatsoever levels and lost… You can run this KeyKatcher in order to do it All over again by ITSELF!….

Hey Dustin (and anyone else who’s interested)the chip is a PIC16C745 28 pin USB microcontroller (Not PIC16C74 as it doesn’t do USB). As for the other components, things are less clear:
2x resistors @ 1.5k ohms (brown, green, red, gold)
I believe the 3-leg component is actually a resonator (with built-in capacitors) running at 6Mhz. As for the value of the capacitor labeled 104, I don’t know. The cap labeled 334 in the wiring diagram didn’t appear in their kit picture, so it either isn’t relevant to the NES-USB controller, or was left out for some reason. Retrozone has a pretty standard wiring scheme for each controller type, so it could be that some controllers don’t require ‘334’. The bad news in all of this for us who’d rather scrounge up our own parts is that PIC16C745 needs to be programmed with a chip burner with the specific software to make it work. After all is said and done, that little retrozone kit for $16 probably isn’t such a bad deal.
Anyone know where I can find some plans to either hack a usb plug on a PS2 joystick, or to make an adaptor for ps2/usb. Even plans for Xbox to usb would be okay. though I’d prefer getting the dual shock controllers working for emulators.

It seems the pre-made Nintendo USB controllers aren’t available currently. The first place mentioned says they will be back available mid this month, but I contacted them for a more specific time, and no reply. The second place says sold out. Does anyone know of any other place one can be purchased from? Thanks.

There is no way to just buy the chip and then just hook it up.

This site has all of the source code, schematics, and everything that you would need to build this yourself. Plus, they also sell kits cheaper than Retrozone.

I decided to use an ipod usb cable with this (I had one laying around, but you can find them various places) and it works great because it is much thinner than most USB cables. The casing closes better, and might I add, the white cable is kind of sexy.
