apple cripples recording on an ipod so belkin and griffin then have to sell us add-on devices for over $50 that can only record at 8khz, which is all pretty shitty. apparently (the rumor is) apple does this so people don’t use their ipods to record stuff they think we shouldn’t, like concerts, whatever.
but don’t worry, there’s a way around it and you can record at high quality, all for free.
1. Install Podzilla on your iPod (not all models are supported).
2. Boot in to Linux on your iPod.
3. Go to Extras > Recordings, choose 8,32,44.1,88.2 or 96kHz the higher, the better quality.
4. Record via Line In a microphone or even use your headphones.
5. Boot back in to the normal iPod OS plug in to the doc, grab your files from the iPod in the “Recordings” folder.
i suspect the next version of the ipod won’t allow booting in to linux and/or this type of recording. enjoy it while you can.
with all the podcasting people out there apple should consider not crippling our ipods so we can all use ipods to record, apple could do this now with a simple software update… or i guess i can keep booting in to linux and never update this ipod or just buy a cheap recorder, bah.

I want to use the iPod, not as a direct recorder, but as a data storage unit. Here’s the situation. I plug a mic into an analog-to-digital converter that sends the converted signal to the Mac via USB port. I want to send the signal to the iPod instead, poss. via USB. Is this possible with any currently available iPods?

Re comment 151 – Ipod bidirectional? Yes, but not through itunes. Also, itunes renames the files with numbers to make this difficult otherwise. You’ll have to use another filemanager (I haven’t found a good one yet). winders explorer works, but is tedious – songs one by one, renaming the files. I backupped the ipod on a hard drive – good only for restoration.
Black screen – I installed podzilla as default boot on 3G ipod, and it came up after the command “podzilla” as almost black font on a black screen – unreadable. I had to let the battery die to recover the ipod. Any ideas?

and then go to my computer/your ipod drive/
make a folder called videos. download mopid.
get an avi video and run it through mopid.
put it in the videos folder.open notepad/write any 2 words and save it as text.avi
put it in the videos folder too.safely remove your ipod.boot in linux and play the text file. ALWAYS PLAY THIS FILE BEFORE PLAYING A VIDEO OR THE SOUND WONT BE ALLIGNED WITH THE VIDEO.play text it should say loading video.then it goes back play ure video and enjoy.if it says audio buffer null just rebbooot.

What brings me here is the fruitless search for a CD quality (Yes, 44.1 16 bit stereo uncompressed) portable recording device. Yes there are pro-units, but they are either: bulky, expensive and 4 Gb seems to be about max capacity. I canot see why iPods and other players do not offer full uncompressed recording capabilities for other than for political reasons – the technology is here! This sucks. I simply need a device to record my own music, as transfer from DAT is too time consuming. A simple question: Does the iPod hack support 44.1 (0r 48) Khz, 16 bit uncompressed STEREO recording – and: once booting from linux to iPod again: can I play the just recorded files?

I have a 3G ipod with linux, wondering about mic record. When I try to record and press the action button, it says:
“/Recordings/06092006
170943.wav: No such file or
directory”
I’m assuming that I need to create an empty directory named “Recordings.” I did that with no success, and also tried creating a subfolder called “06092006,” and tried calling it “060920006170943.wav”
Also, when I create the folder, although my computer (PC) recognized it as “F:/Recordings…” under the file browser, it says “/mnt/Recordings”
I don’t know why.
Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

alled ipod linux and now i cannot get back to my regular ipod…. i have a photo ipod and i cannot get out of linux help me!
I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 5TH GENERATION IPOD HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
1)WHEN THE REBOOT MENU COMES UP SELECT DISC MODE
2)UNHOOK IT
3)THAN IF IT DOESNT WORK TRY IT AGAIN UNTILL IT SHOWS UP IN THE PODZILLA UPDATER
4)RESTORE IT USING IPOD UPDATER
HOPE THIS WORKS CAUSE I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM
