Google TV is a network connected television. It does what you would think: plays television programs, streams media from the internet, and allows you to open URLs on your TV. But one nice feature is that it can also be controlled over the network rather than just via an IR remote. Google publishes apps which make this simple with a smartphone. But the communications protocols are open source, so [Leon Nicholls] wrote a Google TV remote control library in Java.
The video after the break shows him pairing a Raspberry Pi with his television. The image above is the pairing verification code you must enter on the remote hardware before control is authorized. Apparently this is a step that needs to happen every time if using Google’s Anymote library. [Leon] improved that, by saving the pairing data so that the first authorization is all that it takes.
He figures this could be used for home automation. We’re not sure what we’d use it for but we’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Anyone know if googleTV is actually useful for anything? Last time I checked they were 100% useless and had a crap interface.
I will defend it. It’s certainly not living up to the initial ads or hype, but mine has been great for the year I have owned it. Netflix and GTVBox really bring it to life. Interface is not that bad. Have you ever used a Google TV?
What is the lead time on ordering Raspberry Pi’s in the US now? Last I heard it was still 4-6 weeks.
I just recently ordered a couple from element14 and they arrived in 3 days from click to door.
^This. Ordered mine from MCM Electronics(c/o Element14) about a month ago, and got it in four days…
Newark lists them as expected to ship December 5th.
Just realized makershed has them apparently in stock for a few bucks more than the $35 retail.

Google TV might pretty much mean I’ll never be able to use my Roku unit to view youtube videos. Oh well videos streamed from the internet don’t display well on an NTSC TV so old it doesn’t have AV inputs. Sort of retro in a way,CGA like quality. Reminds me that I need to get a OTA TV antenna up before the snow flies
I love my Google TV’s. Plex works great on them!
