The UK Southampton Makerspace, So Make It, has just moved into its first dedicated space, and are holding a grand opening on February 1st!
They have officially been around since early 2013, when they shared a 500sqft space in the back of a bicycle shop warehouse. It wasn’t much, but it was a pretty good temporary home. Toward the end of 2013, they realized they were big enough to justify a private space and decided to try crowd funding. They were fairly successful in raising the startup cash.
Let all of us from Hack a Day (and you!) be the first to congratulate So Make It on acquiring their own private space!
Do we have any Southampton readers in our midst? If so, stick around after the break for full details from So Make It on when and where you can join in the festivities!
It’s our sincere pleasure to announce that we will be holding the Grand Opening of our first dedicated space:
On
1st February 2014 at 2pm
(please arrive from 1pm)
At
Southampton Makerspace,
Unit K6, Liners’ Industrial Estate,
Freemantle,
Southampton SO15 3FQ
Southampton here, didnt know there was a hackspace at all, going to have to get in touch with these guys!
Please do – we’re always excited to greet new people at the space!
Also didn’t know about it, also will be getting involved!
I spent a few years at university in Southampton, but I’m not really close enough now to pop in.
Southampton-ite here. Didn’t get a chance to visit the last makerspace they opened, but will make an effort to come see the new digs!
I knew there was a space in Soton, but hadn’t had the chance to visit yet. I will definitely try and get along to a grand opening, it’d be good to meet some new people.
So, is “Soton” (So’ton?) an abbreviated form of “Southampton”?
Yes, although “Scummers”, “Scumhampton”, etc. also work ;)
Portsmouth resident perhaps? ;o)
I have an electronics A-level, I’m a software developer and I can run a lathe and mill and welder. I feel like this is somewhere I should be but I’m not sure what I would do. Should I just go and immerse myself in the hacking atmosphere? :o)
Yes.
You might meet someone there struggling with a project that interests you, and you have a skill or knowledge that would help them out, such as turning a piece on the lathe, and by doing such, receive a sense of satisfaction (possibly) that may be lacking elsewhere in your life.
You can actually come along tonight if you like, we will be open by 19:30, not as grand as the official opening of course.
Damn, I actually come from Southampton (fine, Hedge End, but still) but live away most of the year due to uni. You may however see me sometime in the summer though…
Portsmouth here, might have to jump on the train for a visit :)
Why not – we’re around at the least every tues, thurs from 7:30 (often earlier) and from 2pm on sat. Or just come along on our ‘opening day’ after 1pm. You’ll be most welcome.
Looks amazing guys. I’ve just from Yorkshire to just south of Salisbury and would love to get involved. ;-)
^moved!
