Walking Desk Is More Annoying Than A Standing Desk

We’re often told that sitting is bad for our backs, for our necks, and even our general health. The standing desk aims to solve this by keeping us in a more vertical position while we work. [Joel Creates] took this a step further by creating a walking desk that’s motorized and keeps him on the move.

[Joel’s] build started with a standing desk. He then pulled off the desk’s standard wheels, and replaced them with motors sourced from cheap second-hand hoverboards and a couple of casters. The hoverboard wheels and casters were upgraded with pneumatic tires for the sake of a smoother ride, and control is via a thumbstick mounted on a mouse. Power is via a large bank of lithium-polymer batteries which are responsible for running the motors and the computer hardware which [Joel] uses to work on the go. A solar panel canopy helps top off the batteries when he’s out and about.

As you might imagine, a guy walking around trails with an entire computer desk draws a lot of attention. It’s probably not the best way to be productive, but it’s a neat way to integrate exercise into your routine if you’re always working at a computer. Somehow we suspect these might not catch on. Video after the break.

    1. Same with me. My hypothesis is – this occurs with people whose focus is single track, they can focus only one thing at a time, and really get immersed into it.
When on a call, I cannot even focus on someone else who is trying to get my attention.

    2. How do you get any work done in an office? Most of the time I listen to music at work isn’t because I want to listen to music; it’s because the alternative is listening to half of a phone conversation or the loud talker down the hall.

    1. Yeah, I have that in my living room, a monitor arm that can swing away to stand up and a foot stool on coaster wheels for the legs in front of the sofa. On the sofa next to me I’ve placed a foam block just large enough as an arm rest and mouse pad. It’s really comfi for watching movies, gaming and also a spot of work ;) The monitor can be repositioned and combined with the TV for a second monitor.

  1. A augmented reality headset, with a laptop in the backpack and keyboard shortcuts on two walking sticks would make more sense.

The last scientific concepts shows better air quality equal better ideas and better decisions. So why not hiking in the forest, with a see trought headset. And also walking for better blood circulation, stress decrease, …

  2. The nurses and respiratory therapists use these in the hospital. They used to be called “Computer on Wheels (COW)” but switched over to “Workstation on Wheels (WOW)” due to some patients thinking that they were being called a cow whenever a nurse was referring to the computer.

  3. Outdoors?
    Bad idea!

But it could be helpful in the subterranean tunnels we soon will inhabit in the need to escape the hostile surface… :-P

    +3 degrees… *sigh!*
