[Alex Hornstein] was bored one Saturday and decided to do something with the large pieces of scrap acrylic he had found. He built a cube and attached 15 RGB LED clusters along with 4 GB LED sticks. It takes 50W of power. The controller is built from ATmega48 and is controlled via serial commands over a wireless link from Spark Fun. I know this week belongs to the Xbox 360, but sometimes you need a break from all of the hype. Once the Xbox Linux team got a mature system established they decided to move on to GameCube Linux. They’ve made a lot of progress:
The GameCube Linux kernel has working drivers for PAL and NTSC framebuffers, the Broadband Adapter (network card), audio, ARAM, Real Time Clock, gamepad, keyboard, DVD, MMC/SD cards (through the SD card adapter) and reset button. It has also preliminary support for memory cards.
Just last month they released instructions on how to build your own bootable disc.

Yes we are back again with MORE cubeness. This is yet another Japanese doing. It’s crazy that someone even thought of this, it’s like saying “Hey! Know what would rock? A Sun SparcStation2 inside a cube!” Well maybe not that bad, but it’s a NeXT cube. The failed one from the ’80s. Still Jobs, just not Apple. They gutted an Apple G4 Cube machine and made a sleek, well, next cube out of it. Even a pretty Next logo is there to complete it. Seems like cube hacks and mods are the new fad

since we are on the topic of rubick’s cube hacks, i would probably be derelict in my duties if i didn’t mention the manhattan sculpture that a crew of hackers briefly transformed into 512-cubic-feet of rubick’s goodness.
this one definately ranks right up there with the mit media lab srubbing bubbles. art hacks are so incredible. they have a subversive way of giving regular folks a brief look at life through hacker goggles.

the final task on my big list of things to do can finally be crossed off. life is good.
this is the hotness, over 1,000 leds make a 3d cube which shows severely low-res video.
this project is an exercise in representing the real world with leds arranged in a cube. using video as the input, the computer takes the image, reconstructs the data and displays it in the cube.
i’m going to drop them a note and see if i get a how-to cooking, this could actually make tv watchable again.
