Hackaday Monday Sipping And Contest

monday sipping

OH my! What a busy and great weekend! As you may or may not know, I was with Jason, Brian, and Karina over at Live8 behind the scenes blogging about Live8 with them. It was a wonderful time and experience. Then I had the balls to go and see War of the Worlds after such a long day, and I reccomend you rush out and see it. Twice. It’s wonderful.

But back to hacks. We’ve made a final decision. Hackaday meetups will officially be once a month and on a thursday. The last thursday of every month to be exact. If you’re in Philadelphia, the meetings here will be insanely awesome. We’ll be renting out hotel conference rooms or something like that, having contests, giveaways, prizes, and discussions. Almost like a mini-defcon each month!

The shirts will also be ordered this week which rocks, so be on the lookout on how to score those aside from Defcon.

Oh! Podcast 03 will be out this week as well! We’re getting our RSS feed up and running soon but if it’s not ready by Friday, we’ll still post the podcast on here and iTunes.

MIT’s infamous disco LED-ridden floor is available for purchase now. Wicked.

And it looks like Brazil is finally getting around to building those $100 laptops. My question to YOU guys is

Hackaday Lazy Afternoons

Lazy Afternoons

Here’s another poll. We like learning stuff. So vote.poll swag

So Live 8 is tomorrow. Woohoo. The lineup keeps getting better. You can check out live8insider.com for live blogging on Live 8. Anyways, I was looking at the new iControl for Garageband and I remembered a nice little secret that you guys might enjoy.

If you want a hardcore discount at the Apple store online, go and sign up for the Apple Developer Connection. I think it’s a once a year $79 or $99 fee. You’ll get all this free stuff and pre-release software etc. which is cool. But aside from that

it is most certainly a dreary day. again.

good news though, the third hackaday podcast is finished! we’re going to release it onto iTunes when we get our RSS feed up (very soon). we’ll be sure to put a download link here too of course. it’s packed with content and humor and we’re sure you’ll love it.

more good gnus. i have ordered hackaday stickers and pins/buttons! they’ll be here in about 2 weeks. we’ll be giving them out at defcon but when they do come, and you want some, we’ll let you know how. it’ll just be the old technique of mailing us a SASE for us to mail them back to you in. so that’s good. everyone loves free stuff.

speaking of stuff, t-shirts. hackaday t-shirts will be made soon. we will have them at defcon and that will be the first place to get them. we’re getting a very small ammount made (like 25 or so), so make sure you try to get to vegas or defcon to score one. other then that, we’ll be giving them out on the site somehow. we just need to think of a creative way. hmmm

i’ve been into louis xiv lately. they’re really goofy. this is also goofy and symbolizes probably the slowest day in news history ever.

and have you guys noticed that windows xp n (dumbest name ever) isn’t selling for crap? tsk tsk.

WoW apparently has an unfinished area that’s accessible. i always liked finding things like this in video games (::cough:: halo 2). [jon]

google maps also apparently can be hacked to show the casualties of the iraq war. pretty interesting how it’s done (don’t give me political crap in the comments, the only politics i want right now are red and blue jello duking it out for my tasting pleasure)

yet another phone being hacked into a cellphone. this one has fischerspooner so you gotta see it.
thanks [cosmicwimpout]

south africa has a tv show based on open source. odd, but cool. check it out.

lastly, if you haven’t checked out our new blog Download Squad yet, you should. I’ll be hitting you all up with mostly mac and linux goodies.

Oh and iTunes 4.9 w/ Podcasting support came out today. We should have an RSS feed for our podcasts in a few days. So I’ll be sure to let you all know!

Bonus

: my joystiq coverage of gameriot is up. comment and you can win some free swag!

Hackaday Monday Sipping

monday sipping

hello los amigos! it’s monday, rainy, crappy, and disgusting outside! so looks like it’s up to us to keep you entertained. because today we most certainly will. i must insist we start off with some fresh links.

this is amazing. i can’t believe it even exists and the cost to make it is nearly nothing if you have a kinkos or fedex store near you. this dude makes furniture out of fedex boxes. that’s so awesome!
thanks for that one [mlynx]

also, the next hackaday podcast will be coming out soon, but not this week. why? because:
a. vince has finals for summer classes thursday. b. live 8 is saturday.

but, the week after that is looking mighty good. so keep your eyes peeled like certain fruits.

it also seems there’s a psp homebrew petition going around. check it out if you want, but it’s pretty much a waste of time. i mean, look how limited net yaroze was. [steyr]

and did you happen to catch the wake n bacon alarm clock on engadget yesterday? mmmm, greasy goodness….for non-jews of course.

make a solar powered generator for “$300”. hey, worth a shot if you really need it. [rufus]

great for a lot of reasons, add extra connectors to ide cables. [sonicvanajr]

oooh, in the world of file-sharing and pirating known as p2p (whatever, you know it is), grokster lost to mgm in their supreme court battle. fair? no. are they screwed now in terms of fines? yes.

look at this! java is turning 10! wow, it’s been awhile! it kind of sucks that i’m currently being forced to learn this silly language right now in order to graduate. pshhhh. but anyways, looks like sun is apparently throwing full source code at you for several “major” applications as a way of celebrating. hey, i’ll totally take that anytime.

we’ll end your monday java sipping (HAHAHAAHAHA WASNT THAT FUNNY? NO IT WASNT.) with (get this) a decent article from cnn on how the internet used to be. remember our pal mosaic? yeahhhh. of course you do. and i quote the movie hackers: “it’s got a 28.8bps modem!!!
