Tell Us Your Story

hacking

i’m working on a hackaday podcast and it only seems appropriate that i hear from the hackaday community.  i’ve received some really great messages so far (thank you!), but i know there are a lot more of you out there.

i’d like to hear stories about your favorite hackers.  just call in and mention your favorite hackaday hacker and why you liked their project.  even better, tell us a story about someone or something that inspired you to become a hacker.  or tell us something else.  it’s up to you.

don’t worry about making mistakes

  1. I want to get started with a hobby in electronics. I have an MS in CS, so I wouldn’t mind learning a little microprocessor programming as well…

    Anyway, a few questions.
What sort of tools will I need?
I know I’ll need a soldering iron and multimeter. Suggestions on these that work well at a decent (or cheap) price?
Any good resources (websites or books) for a beginner like me?
    Anything else I should know?

  2. My inspriation was my friends when I lived in New Mexico we used to blow things up in the desert and we made flamethrowers. See:

Everyday my friends were trying something new and always motivated to come up with something as well. We hung fluorescent tubes off of power lines, dressed up like dune creatures, meditated under the moon, and hacked amigas like crazy.

Now I live in suberbia and its hard to test flamethrowers in my back yard so I’ve moved on to building a 100w CO2 laser to cut sheet metal in my basement.

  3. I’d like to phone, but live in the UK so it’s not really possible…

Still, I’ll share my story. First, thanks for linking to my Amiga in-car MP3 player site. The reason I decided to do the project was basically that all radio where I live in Portsmouth, and in the UK generally, is rubbish. I got fed up changing CDs too, and since I already did a lot of Amiga programming it seemed like something fun to do.

More generally, it’s important to have hobbies and diversions. Hacking is also a way to be creative and to produce something that you can really be prowd of.

  4. I am somewhat of a newbie when it comes to hacking (but I have been following this site since you created it last year. I would like to know the same thing a #1. It would be great if I could learn how to program microprocessors or you could lead the way to some resources.

  5. my phone says contact service provider does anyone know how to fix it? i did it while trying to unlock it. is there a hack to get it to work again? i cant do anything on it and all it says is that message. it is a motorola v300 thank you.

  6. I build a program that hides the GUI of almost any program, using a chromatic technique similar to those used on kids games where they places a red colored filter on an image and a hidden message appears, I do the same trick, but in real time with any program, for example i hide the MS iExplorer when i surf adult sites, if mom gets into my room, she sees nothing, but I use decoder glasses, so i can see through the mask.

  10. I know this is in the graveyard already but o well, zombies need to be resurrected too.

The thing that inspired me to become a hacker was just general curiosity for programming and what will happen if I do this mindset. This was my first inspiration, then I watched the movie Hackers a couple years later and that gave me the final push to become a hacker. Great movie btw
