Steorn Orbo Motor Replica

Reader [Hjhndr] ran across an interesting set of tests and wanted to know if they’re brilliant or just a load of bull. We’re not making the call on that, but the tests on a Steorn Orb motor replica are worth looking at.Keep in mind, people used to think the earth was flat and scientists of the time would have sworn up and down that’s the way things were.

The Steorn Orbo is a motor that generates more power than is put into it. At least according to Steorn Limited that’s what it does. An independent panel of scientists said otherwise a few years back but that didn’t stop the company from showing off the concept a few more times, most recently a showing in Dublin ended this month.

So anyway, [Jean-Louis Naudin] took what he saw from those demonstrations and built a replica. He’s made several papers about the principle as well as his testing available online. There’s a lot of math, a little bit of smoke and mirrors, and several videos. Take a look and let us know what you think in the comments.

  1. Perpetual motion – is a solar cell perpetual motion? No. Neither are magnetic motors ‘perpetual’ nor do they violate laws that can’t be violated.
The energy comes from somewhere, big duh. Some kind of ambient energy at the same frequency of magnetism is what it seems to be.

All this “Laws of Thermodynamics” crap has got to stop.

“The energy comes from somewhere, big duh.”

The Big Duh is ***WHAT*** friggin energy? It hasn’t *actually* been demonstrated. The Orbo oscillograms are meaningless and don’t demonstrate anything.

    @Duh
“Some kind of ambient energy at the same frequency of magnetism is what it seems to be.”

Meaning what, exactly? Magnetism has a “frequency”??? Please enlighten us.

Yes SAH! Hacking == ignorance. Okay. Igor, dump all the Arduinos and set the controls for Year Zero.

(…now where did I put my tin hat?)

  3. Come on Peeps! This violates several laws of physics and no where in there do I see maxwell’s equations for EMF generation etc. Of course… One could add a dilithium crystal and a plasma conduit… Or a warp core. Screw it just add some cold fusion technology.

“there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”

  4. Wow this is heated. The vibe I got from this guy was more that he just wanted to build a replica than to prove that free energy existed or something like that. I mean, from what I’ve seen of Steorn Orbo, it’s a huge publicity stunt that smacks known physics in the face like a spoiled child, but isn’t the best way to completely debunk all of their claims just to build an exact replica and be able to say, “See, it DOESN’T WORK!”

  5. @fwirt – exactly. That should sum this all up very nicely. If you see a magician do a trick, you try to recreate the trick yourself and then figure out it’s just a trap door. Thats all this guy did, he saw someone make a bold claim, rebuilt his design, and proved that it doesn’t work on the same principles that the original claimed. It’s bubkis, zilch, nada. NEXT!

  6. Even if this is BS, I enjoyed reading it. I learned a few things I didn’t know about magnetics, so it was worth it.

From the start I knew the “free energy” part of this brilliantly designed -motor- (not generator, look at the title) was crap, seeing as how they connected LEDs to that white pickup coil to prove you could pull energy off the thing, but for SOME reason (Gee I wonder why), they never connected the drive coils to the pickup coil and let it try to drive itself. That’s because IT CAN’T!

I’m not going to say it’s impossible to get energy from a permanent magnet. In fact, I have always believed there MUST be a way to convert the constant force of a magnet into mechanical or electrical energy. We simply have yet to devise a way. 20 years ago everyone thought it to be impossible for an object to be suspended in mid air using only permanent magnets (and bird shot :), but look here:

    http://scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/magnets/suspension.html

Think about it, a magnet is always producing a force, if you could tap into that force, you could potentially get energy out of it. We are far from fully understanding magnetic force.

Kudos to this guy for not having a closed mind and trying this out! If we all act like the people bashing this post, we have zero chance of ever discovering any “free” energy that may very well be within our grasp.

    Just my $.02

  7. @Afro Tim
The theorem that you are referring to is Earnshaw’s:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earnshaw%27s_theorem

In a technical sense this linked experiment does not violate the theorem because the experiment includes dynamic forces (the diamagnetism from the Bismuth) and the theorem only applies to strictly static forces.

I certainly wouldn’t go as far as to say we MUST be able to get energy out of a constant force, any more than we could get energy out of a spring or energy out of gravity.

But still you are right, science depends on testing and breaking out of paradigms. If only we could bust out of these silly laws of thermodynamics…

  8. It isn’t a free energy device.

The work in (electrical) is exceeded by the work out(in heat at the moment) due to extraction of energy from the fields of the magnets.

The magnets are attracted to the cores around which the coil is wound. The electrical system and magnetic system are not entangled in a back emf situation due to the geometry of the interaction. The copper wound around the core doesn’t receive electrical energy from the motion of the magnets, thus de-coupling back emf from the control system.

This leaves the magnetic system and control system to extract energy from the magnets.

Design the device properly and perhaps pick-up coils can be introduced to extract the total control system electrical requirements.

There ain’t no dummies book yet, though.

  9. lol haven seen a flame war like this in years

yes perpetual energy is probably impossible although maybe one day if we’re lucky – (just to upset those who spent this whole page crying about it) maybe it could be re designed into some form of low powered motor though

the dude who made this did get off his ass n do something to try n prove/disprove it tho and theres probly gona b many more in decades to come too yes they failed but he did something more constructive than filling a page with repetitive comments even if it is a spinny paperweight

the company is blatantly a investment scammer as are most at their core

the dollar is the devil and thus the root of all evil

@ evryone bitching like narrow minded children-
if it bothers you that much im prety sure thers a lot more articles to read through on here im pretty sure this sites not about being narrow minded so either say something intresting or STFU

@ everyone who mentioned the arduino LED stuff yeah i agree NO MORE ive made a few hello world level wares the world doesnt need to see them
whether its a 1×1 or a 500×500 grid its an avr make it do something kool instead – be original

and to finish off all those quoting from books and laws please beat yourselves over the head with them because most of the data in them is theoretical untill proven and even when proven disprovable at a later date laws/rules are made to be broken

consider your minds opened or please click the X in the corner of he page now

  10. First, I am quite sure the laws of thermodanics are quite safe from this device.

If it is draining the magnets of their flux and converting it to power, couldn’t this be used as a battery?

  11. I think it’s important that we draw a line between “perpetual energy” and “energy derived from sources we don’t fully understand.”

Here’s a very elementary example: The Earth is a permanent magnet, as are many other celestial bodies. They are constantly in motion relative to each other. Basic physics explains a relationship between delta magnetic flux and induced current.

Imagine capturing that in a coil. It is absolutely possible and it may seem “free” when it reality it is drawing kinetic energy from the moving celestial bodies and converting it into electrical energy.

  12. Naudin never shows all the connections he makes to his projects. Bill Amasci has some links to working versions of this made out of two liter soda bottles, but you have to hand push/start them

Now THIS is a tougher one. They just passed a huge benchmark, and he has licensed it in China

and for the fusion folks, check here first, some good info on the Nickel/hydrogen LENR
