The quick and simple portal gun hack was published a little ver a week ago and has cleared almost 1.5 million views. This is just a taste of things to come as we plunge into creating more fun original content for hackaday. If you haven’t yet, you should go subscribe to our youtube channel.
We have many more exciting projects planned for the near future. Projects involving high voltage, lasers, and thermite! We could always use more ideas though. What projects would you like to see done? Think big, we want to remind people just how awesome hacking can be!
We now have access to some high speed cameras, a wonderful and professional gentleman named [Jay] who is an astounding video editor, and quite possibly the brightest readership in the universe. Let us know your ideas for awesome projects!
So, I already know that at 41 and a non-gamer, I’m a sort of hopeless troglodyte. Still, urbandictionary usually lets me keep up with all the newfangled lingo the kids keep coming up with. It has really never failed me.
Until I looked up “portal gun.”
Don’t worry, plenty of our next plans will not be pop culture based.
I think his issue was more if you look up “portal gun” on urbandictionary the only result is for a sexual act in which a person receiving anal sex imitates having a portal in his buttocks.
So you aren’t finding it hard to overstate your satisfaction?

Somebody got edited?
I’m fine with the portal gun build/hack, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of fun ones coming along, as there always are.
It was urbandictionary’s definition of “portal gun” that gave me a chuckle.
Try being non-gamer at 56, but on the bright side we have the internet & search capabilities.
You are never too old to play portal :D
Videos are not my cup of tea, I don’t have the time to watch them. Couldn’t you dedicate some resource to improving the written content – technically as well as editorially (spelling, grammar and style)?
I like these videos, there’s nothing wrong with them.
If you have the time to read an article, you surely have the time to skim a short video?
I can skim an article in 10-20s. To extract the useful content from a video takes substantially longer because it’s not random-access in the way a written document is. I also have an intense personal dislike of the medium because I am deaf, and the soundtracks/subtitles are poor in this genre.
Was never meant as an insult.
Given your circumstances, it explains why you prefer the written articles.
Your right. I would much rather spend 15-20 min to ready an article describing everything as apposed to 1.4 min to watch and understand right away…..
Hey, lets take it easy on the guy. Everyone doesn’t have to like every delivery method. That’s why I tried hard to write a thorough enough corresponding article.
umm so how do it make a portal? lol jk. awesome build!
wait what.
While definitely a cool hack, it’s too bad such a simple hack got so much attention while hacks that take a lot more work are often overlooked (not here, but somewhere more mainstream). I’m thinking things like http://spritesmods.com/?art=gbamidi
Yeah, this is probably one of the least impressive things the site has ever run, but it gets the most traffic because it’s based around something big in gamer culture.
But I guess if it brings more traffic to the site and provides the funding to do more interesting projects, we can’t complain too much.
it has its purpose. The next one will be super fun. We’re revisiting thermite hard drive destruction.
Agreed… unbelievable viewer response on this!
I blame my mild OCD for pointing out that the Portal Gun, in game universe, does not levitate things — that was Half Life 2’s Gravity Gun. But, of course, nicely done.
… Or did it? Now I confused myself.
it levitates the weighted cubes.
And guess what? He jumped into a closed portal because the red one was NOT opened yet … And you say you like portal? :>
anyway: Nice build! I’d like to see the build of that gun too!
Something that genuinely demonstrates skill, please.
Awesome build
