this sunday we bring you a DIY PSP USB charger. Say you don’t drive, but have a car charger laying around that is 5V and will satisfy the PSP’s power needs. you should take that charger and hack the end off and replace it with a male usb cable. this way you can charge pretty much anywhere you might find a usb port. especially handy if you’re going to be in a computer lab or you’re at a friend’s house and the PSP dies after hours of metal gear acid. it’s a fairly simple hack, but a very useful one.

the new psp game wipeout pure apparantly comes with a full featured web browser that is used to download updates. normally it’s restricted for that purpose alone, but roto sent me a line this morning saying that it could be hacked to function as a general web browser with a little dns trickery.
just point the psp to a nameserver that you can control, make a dns entry for ingame.scea.com to go to your own webserver, and stick a /wipeout/index.html there. when you hit download in wipeout, it will load up your custom page!
i’m told the browser supports javascript, so it wouldn’t be too hard to code up a quick address bar along with links to google, and (of course) your favorite site.
(thanks yuppicide for the link to the working mirror. the author’s url is here but it’s currently down.)
update: just received some more detailed info from roto. continue reading for more information.
so when sony announced that the pstwo would not support an internal hard disk, a lot of people were rightfully dissapointed. games like final fantasy xi are not playable on the new system. more importantly, owners of the pstwo would never get the chance to drive seamlessly from city to city in grand theft auto by running the game directly from the hard disk. just think of all the people you could be running over instead of waiting for the next city to load.
well, some hacker who goes by the name of automan has rewritten pstwo history. photos of a pstwo with an internal hard disk have been popping up in forums around the net. the job is not for the faint of heart, and you’ll need a 12v power supply to power the hard disk, but to help get you started i’ve included the ide wiring images after the break.
are there any brave souls that want to give this a try and confirm that it’s legit?
a lot of folks sent this in, so we’ll put it up here, so it’s always here in our console section…the playstation 2 portable project. an amazing hack, taking a psone, and using a PS2’s guts to make a portable version, nicely done.
using a standard ata/ide hard drive (up to 120 gb) and a tools like hdloader and hdadvance you can copy all your playstation games to the drive, which makes them load faster and will cut down on wear-n-tear on the discs. just make sure you’re just doing this with the games you own.
