IR Digital Camera Mod

infrared camera

We’ve featured IR webcams before, but this is Fuji FinePix 2300 still camera that has been modified to take IR photos. The site has a pretty thorough walk through of the disassembly and has all of the warnings you’d expect. Once the IR filter is removed (or broken in this case) it is replaced by at least two layers of material cut from exposed 35mm negatives. From the sample pictures it looks like it works well. I kinda wish I had been an early adopter so I’d have a worthless camera laying around right now to tear open.

Hackaday Links

I was wrong. The skull and crossbones isn’t gaining new popularity. Josh Rubin is just obsessed. I do love my Kid Robot hoodie.

Here are some other IR cam links:

PVC Bagpipes

bagpipe

They’re supposed to sound great. I swear. Well at least compared to bagpipes. They should only cost you about $5 not including the reeds. I doubt many of you are going to rush to the hardware store to build these, since you need to be pretty familiar with the instrument beforehand. That being said: I’m sure the submitter will get some great mileage out of his pipes without the fear of damage and I do actually like bagpipe music.

Looks like the skull and crossbones is the new pink. Maybe we should make our logo look like Mr. Yuk to stay ahead of the curve.

FedEx furniture was bouncing around the blogs a couple months ago. Apparantly the company doesn’t want to furnish your apartment. The correction at the end is kinda funny.

Have you checked out the BlackDog Linux usb computer. I think it would come in pretty handy for those of you headed back to school and their inadequate labs.

Last weekend some HAM enthusiasts tired for a WiFi long shot with a weather ballon. It didn’t work so well (they think it was swinging too much) but they’ll be trying again. Good luck! [ed3]

Computer Controlled RC Helicopter

rc helicopter

RC helicopters have become so cheap that they’re now a really attractive robotics platform. This guide gives a jumping off point for starting your own project. It covers how to integrate a Gumstix embedded linux system into the helicopter. Code is provided so that you can hook up a usb controller to your laptop and control the helicopter over Bluetooth. All you need to do after that is build some cool controls, hook up a speaker and start streaming Ride of the Valkyries.

[thanks Neurolizer]
