[william] was blogging the 8th Annual International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition last weekend. You can find his coverage over at GoRobotics.net. LinuxDevices.com has a write up on “Best Newcomer”, the Mongoose, since the winner ran XP.

Finally, from IpaqModder:

There are things in Ireland called net phones, They are found all over the world especially this model. It in Ireland is an eircom net phone, I found out the other day (by seeing an eircom technicians fat ass) there is a reset switch underneath. I pressed it with a key and indeed the box reset. But the best bit is by holding the q and the v key at startup it goes to admin mode, there is a setting in there to add websites to the free to view list, and one one of these in a payphone in dublin hackaday.com is free to view

Scribbler Bot

scribbler bot

The Scribbler Bot was inspired by a flash toy called scribbler. Scribbler lets you make a simple line drawing and then generates a more complex drawing by applying a set of algorithms. The Scribbler Bot moves the drawing into the physical world. It is a simple two axis plotter using two stepper motors and a control board. The plotter wasn’t intended to be very accurate since the shuddering adds a new level of complexity to the drawing. The plotter control is through a Dreamweaver plugin, but it should be able to take any binary feed. Thanks to Douglas McDonald for the cool project and for scribbling out our logo in ball-point pen.

I am about to head out to see Murderball, but don’t think I’ve neglected the links for today.

Just a quick update before I head to the airport. I would have told you Amarillo folks I was coming if I had been spending more than 24 hours here.

A few have asked about the Philly meetup. I don’t live in Philly, Vince does, I live in Lincoln, NE. So, feel free to hold meetings and I will post announcements, but i’m not going to be in PA. As always you can check out #hackaday on EFnet.

Do you know the story of the late John Britten? He built a competitive GP bike from the ground up. Now you can buy one for $249K. It’s unfortunate that Britten passed nearly 10 years ago, but at least the MotoCzysz C1 is trying to recapture the spirit.

[Luke Kanies] tipped me that Paul Frank was on the cover of Inc. magazine wearing a Hack-A-Day Beanie. Uh, we don’t make beanies. I checked out the magazine and it is really difficult to make out. A little googling turned up Paul Frank’s Skurvy product line.

I was trying to use pickupline to bypass the wireless captive portal at Denver International yesterday, but was having problems. I think they hard coded eth1 into the spoofer. Anybody else had a chance to play with this? Time for round two.

Lyra MP3 Player Drive Upgrade

lyra upgrade

This is a hack by the most basic of definitions. Seriously, the tool list is only two items long and the second item is “butterknife”! No real technical problems here; you just need to format your new 80gb harddrive as vfat and then mirror the RCA files from the original 40gb drive. It’s nice to see someone else try this before you go knifing around.

On the topic of MP3 players: have there been any other network attached players besides the Rio Karma?

[thanks ikka]

As you read this I’m probably riding a turboprop to Amarillo, but never fear links are here.

I’m kind of surprised by yesterday’s poll; Emacs is getting thoroughly trounced. I’m a fan of vi, but that’s mainly because I can type and never got into the whole “ctrl+meta+wang” thing. Emacs does have the capabilities of doing almost everything that isn’t text editing.
