somebody over at spark fun decided that those 1980s zach morris cell phones just weren’t retro-cool enough. keith swett sent us the link to this hack which involves retrofitting an old 1950s at&t rotary phone with modern day tri-band cell hardware.

found out yesterday that there’s a shuffle shortage and gadget battery life can only be expected to get worse. bummer. at least you can make the most of your waiting-for-shuffle blues and solder yourself a ‘usb battery’. this little gizmo runs off a 9 volt battery and supplies your favorite little device with the proper 5 volts of mobile power.
in lieu of running an ipod off of it, i tested it with an mpx220 smartphone and it should work fine with any low power mobile device that can charge via usb cable. read more for instructions on how to make your own.
Using the USB cable for your Motorola V300, V400+ etc. phone (via Bluetooth won’t work), the P2Kman seem utility, a hex editor, and this tutorial, you can probably teach your phone to make you coffee in the morning. can’t wait for verizon to get their act together and start carrying the treo 650? right now only sprint is the one that has ’em, but a few people over at treocentral have figured out to hack the firmware on the 650 so it’ll work on verizon’s network.

man, i am disappointed that i didn’t think of this when i had the n-gage, most likely because i didn’t like the device and tossed it, but now this mod kit ($15) allows you to leave the n-gage on and swap out games really quickly. nicely done guys.
