DJ Controller Modded For Better Scratching

[Jeremy Bell] loves scratching, but he had a problem. His Hercules DJ controller wasn’t really doing a great job at emulating the kind of action one would get with a real turntable. The solution was both mechanical and electronic in nature!

As stock, the Hercules MIDI rig lets you scratch in a relatively simplistic way. When it detects a finger touching the rotary control, it lets you scratch back and forth with great motion tracking. However, when you let go, playback resumes at regular speed instantaneously, which creates a somewhat inorganic sound.

The fix was to make some mechanical mods to the MIDI controller. [Jeremy] tried out a variety of different methods of using a motor to spin the rotary control continuously, from geared rigs to belt-driven setups. It was then possible to scratch on the controller, and then let it return to normal rotational speed, creating much smoother  auditory transitions. However, this was imperfect, as for whatever reason, the Hercules rig would stop tracking the rotary control accurately unless it detected a finger was touching it. [Jeremy] worked around this by whipping up a slip-ring-like setup to keep his body permanently in contact with the rotary control even while spinning.

The results are pretty great—they’re both mechanically janky and fantastically satisfying to listen to. We’ve featured some other great DJ controller hacks over the years, like this sweet Pioneer UI upgrade.

Microsoft Finally Ups FAT32 Size Limit

You probably don’t spend a lot of time using the FAT32 file system anymore, since it’s thoroughly been superseded many times over. Even so, Microsoft has seen fit to deliver an upgrade for FAT32 for the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview build. Finally, the stock Windows tools will let you format a FAT32 drive up to 2 TB instead of locking you to a 32 GB maximum!

The size limit was never baked into the FAT32 spec itself. With a 32-bit field for counting sectors, the file system supports up to 2 TB volumes with 512-byte sectors. However, as explained by former Microsoft developer [Dave Plummer], it just so happened that the 32 GB limit came about because of a random decision made when slapping together the Format dialogue box over 30 years ago.

The pending change was first announced in 2024, affecting the command line format tool as well. It’s actually been possible to create larger FAT32 volumes for some time, you just couldn’t easily do it with Microsoft’s standard formatting tools.

FAT32 is still a terrible file system to use in 2026, mostly because it has a hard limit on file size that tops out at 4 GB. It’ll ruin your life if you’re shooting HD or 4K video. We often don’t spend a lot of time musing over file systems in detail, but they’re right at the heart of everything we do on our computers on a daily basis. Sometimes, it bears thinking about!

Building A Big RC Mini Truck

Kei trucks are some of the smallest commercial vehicles out on the roads today. You can also get lots of cute kei RC cars if you’re into the toy side of things. [Victor] wanted to split the difference with Truck-Kun, and built a 1:3 scale kei truck to show off at a recent anime convention. 

The truck is modelled on the Suzuki Carry.

The build started with a classic hacker favorite—a bunch of old hoverboard motors. These brushless hub motors are pretty easy to drive and have plenty of torque right out of the box. A simple ladder frame was whipped up with a hoverboard wheel at each corner, with a body whipped up out of cardboard, paint, and a few 3D printed parts to hold everything together.

Steering was courtesy of a leadscrew and stepper motor from an old 3D printer. RP2040s were thrown in to talk to the motor controllers, while an ESP32-S3 was charged with communicating with an Xbox One controller to receive directional commands.

It was a neat build that stood tall over most any other kei RC car at Anime Los Angeles. Only, it ended in tears when the 100-pound machine accidentally drove at full throttle into a wall and smashed itself to pieces. Still, that’s just an excuse for [Victor] to build a better one for next year.

China Is Shooting For The Moon Sooner Than You Think

Humanity first reached the moon in 1969. We went back a few times, then lost interest within three short years, and we haven’t been back since. NASA has just flew a quartet of astronauts around the moon last week, and hopes to touch lunar soil by 2028. But the American space program is no longer the only game in town.

China has emerged as another major player in the second race for the Moon. Having mastered human spaceflight 23 years ago, the country’s space program has been moving from strength to strength. A moon landing is on the cards, with the country hoping to plant its boots, and presumably flag, in 2030.

CCA Ethernet Cables: Not Up To Scratch, But Are They Dangerous?

If you’ve ever bought a suspiciously cheap Ethernet cable from an online listing, there’s a decent chance you’ve encountered Copper Clad Aluminum. Better known as CCA, it’s exactly what it sounds like—an aluminium conductor with a thin skin of copper deposited on the outside. Externally, cables made with this material look largely like any other, with perhaps the only obvious tell being that they feel somewhat lighter in the hand.

CCA is cheaper than proper copper cabling, and it conducts signals well enough to function in an Ethernet cable. And yet, it’s a prime example of corner-cutting that keeps standards bodies and professional installers up at night. But just how dangerous is this silent scourge, found lurking in so many network cabinets around the world?

Not Up To Scratch

Everything you need to know about CCA is in the name—it refers to an aluminium wire with a thin copper cladding, typically applied through a die extrusion process. The reasoning behind this exploits a real physical phenomenon called the skin effect, wherein higher-frequency AC signals tend to travel along the outer surface of a conductor. The idea goes that since most of the current moves through the outer copper skin layer anyway, the less-conductive aluminium core doesn’t unduly impact the wire’s performance. Using copper-clad aluminium wiring is, in theory, desirable because aluminium is much cheaper than copper, which can really add up over long cable runs. Imagine you’re wiring a building with with hundreds of miles of Ethernet cabling, all with eight conductors each—the savings add up pretty quickly.

There’s a problem with CCA cabling in these contexts, though. Due to prevailing cabling standards, any cable made with CCA is technically not even a real Ethernet cable at all. The relevant documents are unambiguous.

ANSI/TIA-568.2-D requires conductors in Category-rated cable to be solid or stranded copper. No other materials are acceptable, and thus CCA is explicitly excluded from use in Category cable applications. A cable with CCA conductors cannot legitimately carry a Cat5e, Cat6, or any related designation under any circumstances. Similarly, ISO/IEC 11801 has the same requirement. The U.S. National Electrical Code also states that conductors in communications cables, other than coaxial cable, shall be copper. It’s easy to think of online console gaming as an invention of the 2000s. Microsoft made waves when Xbox Live dropped in 2002, with Nintendo and Sony scrambling to catch up with their own offerings that were neither as sleek or well-integrated.

However, if you were around a decade earlier, you might have experienced online console gaming much closer to the dawn of the Internet era. As far back as 1990, you could jump online with your Sega Mega Drive. But what did an online console feel like in the dial-up era?

Solar Balconies Take Europe By Storm

Solar power has been around for a long time now. Once upon a time, it was mostly the preserve of research projects and large-scale municipal installations. Eventually, as the technology grew ever cheaper, rooftop solar came along, and cashed-up homeowners rushed to throw panels on their homes to slash their power bills and even make money in some cases.

Those in apartments or rented accommodations had largely been left out of the solar revolution. That was, until the advent of balcony solar. Popular in Germany, but little known in the rest of the world, the concept has brought home power generation to a larger market than ever.
